Staying Focused - Quit Playing Around!

Tool, or a distraction? - A computer is a great tool, but it can also be a distraction.

Ok, it's obvious we're all using the Internet, some of us more than we probably should be. Do you find yourself playing games or visiting sites throughout the day that take away from your productivity? Do you play games on Facebook when you should be doing laundry? Do you skim the posts on mylot every 5 minutes when you should be working? If you work at your computer, how do you stay focused on the tasks you should be accomplishing, rather than let the day get away from you, with nothing to show for your time?

I guess for me, its not bad as anyone could imagine as long as you can handle the situation. Like me, if i am cleaning the house, when i get tired, i will open my laptop and then see who are online in a certain site. I chat a little, I play a little. When i restore my vigor, i stopped exploring on the net and get back to cleaning. That's what I'm doing. It is okay as long as you know your target. Doing two things at the same time.

for me it depends on our niche online or offline. having focus to everything you do is the foundation for success in life. Mastering the skills of getting organized, staying focused, and seeing work through to the end will help in just about everything you do.Staying focused can be very difficult at times.it's a challenge actually. You are probably distracted by things such as some websites. Remove everything that could distract you from your works' pace.To keep your mind focused you need big, bold goals. The bigger your purpose the less trouble you will have to achieve what you have in mind. Whatever you choose, your system has to work for you. If it doesn't, change it until you find what does. It's a great way to learn about yourself and. what works for your unique needs.

That's fine if you don't use the computer for work. Those of us who are on the computer all day because that's where we work (freelance writer), it's a bit more difficult.

One thing that helps is that I hate those Facebook games! Seriously, I've found the best way to stay on track is to make a list of things I need to accomplish. I even put things like "do the dishes" or "clean the bathroom" on the list because when I glance at it I can see immediately how much I have left to do for the day. My goal each day is to cross off everything on the list. If I have time left or if I don't have a particularly busy day, then I allow myself time to play. Just not those Facebook games!

In that case, it's a matter of self discipline. One thing I used to do now and then that might help is set a timer and allow myself an hour to do whatever I wanted. When the timer went off, it was time to "go to work." Treat it like a job where you have to show up at a certain time.

I make lists upon lists, but it doesn't do me much good. I'll often say 'as soon as I finish this game, I'll go do thus-and-such', then it'll be 'when I reach a certain score'. Or someone will pop up in chat or I'll see a post I need to respond to, then I start over.

I do have a couple of games open when I'm working on the computer. I write articles and sometimes--well, a lot of times!--get stymied about what to write next, how to phrase something or I need ideas. Then I go to my games and play awhile till I solve my problem. Getting my mind off my work helps me complete it. Sometimes I'll go outside, other times I'll play games but it helps the creative process.

A break can definitely help you get back on track if you're stuck, but it's hard not to get sucked in and avoid the work. Just one more game. I'll quit when I reach a score of xxx.

I play on Pogo more than I should. I try to be sensible about it though. I take classes online, so I try to make sure I do some school work each day before I get involved in any Pogo games. I work out of the house so my gaming never interferes with work, thank goodness. Our computers at work do not allow us on any websites that are not company owned, so I cannot play games from work. I do let other things slide though like household chores and taking the kids out. The kids wanted to go to the pool today but I decided to stay in and play computer games instead. I tried to get them to go play in the yard but they came right back in. Now I'm going to force myself off the computer to do some dishes and figure out something for dinner.

I only play a few games on facebook (no, not Farmville, LOL. Mostly word games), but I can't really close facebook down because I do a lot of networking there and need to keep up with a lot of my groups (which have to do with writing (my work)).

Yes its important to stay focus on the tasks in real life rather than in the virtual world. When i was young, i used to be addicted to playing Dota, a warcraft 3 custom map game and this addiction drove on for 3 years and i played the game every single day up to 10 hours a day. This cause me deep trouble as my result of a top student became one of the worst in the college. However, i manage to quit the game eventhough i am still spending much time online, i am using it for better purposes like learning new stuff and programming.

That's amazing! Did you get through it yourself, or did you seek help? I believe gaming can be a true addiction.

Nope i didn't seek help at all although there was time when other people close to me was worried that my addiction will get worse and they tried to talk me out of it, and failed. When i finally managed to quit it, i think it should be because i finally came to a point when i found purpose in real life instead of virtual world, which is a result of maturity thinking. I always believe it is easier to get addicted when you are still a kid and your thinking has yet to develop fully.

playing games in leisure time is good. You should not play games whole day because you will be addicted to such games.Give importance to work first, then you do what you want.If you are focused on what are you are doing then nothing will happen beyond you.

You're missing my point. If you work at the computer, how do you keep from getting distracted by games and fun sites?

i think on your part is just a matter of discipline. turn your focus inward. Decide what you really want. Understand what things are necessary in your life right now. What do YOU want? What matters to YOU? Explore your mind.go after the very first thing on that list with all of your willpower. Ignore anything that doesn’t help you reach that first goal. In fact, feel free to erase or burn everything else on that list if it distracts you at all… remember, that first item on that list is what you want more than ANYTHING else in the entire world.

Luckily I am not into games or social sites that do not pay. I have some memberships but you will not find me there. I go out to a real job, and I do my other stuff. It is not always easy to pay attention to what I need to do though. More particularly I have lots of sewing or hand work that I would like to do. I just have to make them more attractive to do.

not really, I belong to a scrabble club and I do the games for that, but that is about it. I am not writing as much lately. I am too tired for that.

Hi Ldyjarhead, I get on the internet almost everyday. Nowadays I just keep on doing online works which are beneficial and useful to my job. Unlike those earlier days when the fist time I could access internet at home. Due to the convenient, I spent lots of time surfing net randomly on account of curiosity as well the huge virtual world was so fresh, attractive and exciting for me to explore. I stayed up late indulged in playing games or watching tv series too. Just imagine how much precious time had been wasting doing such silly things. It's unhealthy as well to sit in front of the pc until wee hours frequently After I realized that there wasn't any productivity in income I then did my best to refrain myself from indulging in doing so. I had stopped playing fb games for quite a long time I enjoy doing work on my laptop and listening to my favorite music at the same time. Lol...I'm tough enough and can leave the game after playing a short while to get myself refreshed. Have a nice day and happy posting

Yup. I spend too much time playing solitaire when I should be doing something else just a tad more constructive, like vacuuming or doing the dishes. (Welcome back, btw.)

Well, considering I live too far from town and have no car, most of what I do is either here or FB, both I use primarily for social, but also some money making from mylot and encouragement from FB and mylot. I don't play games on FB though, but that doesn't mean time doesn't get away from me. Then I rush to clean the house, and on Thursday I clean a neighbor's house and sometimes get extra hours, but not often enough as now it seems every single bit of money I get, (not counting my online money) goes to my husband for gas so he came make it to work. So, though I do get lost here, (not bad since I am making money) or FB,(bad because I am not making money, but I am making friends)I do feel quite overwhelmed.. Oh, I forgot, I had taken a lot of time trying to figure out why I can't get online on my laptop and now see it is my router which I bought in Oct. and paid the 3.00 for a year warranty. So now I have to go through that paperwork, but is will be worth it, because I need my laptop to get away from family if I end up working on my story.. So in a way, it is a distraction, but not totally controlling my life...

Yes, I have my two critters and my son, along with a husband who calls during work or needs me when he gets home. So my time is very precious..

I don't have anyone to worry about except my critters, so that makes things harder for me. I don't have too many real responsibilities, so it's not as easy to stay on task. I can definitely use the money, but I'm not quite destitute. I'm sure if I needed it to buy bread and milk this afternoon, it would be different. Maybe I'll put more of my money into savings at the first of the month, then force myself to focus and earn more to live off the rest of the month.

Well It depends on you and what is your job there. Lots of people play games simply to relax when the day is really hard with many problems. However there are people that play all day games and think that they do their job perfectly but one day they got fired. And yeah it is likely for someone when work with computer to get unfocused in his job. So it depends on your job. If you have free time in your job and you have finished all tasks than there is no problem. But if you haven't done your job and first playing games than this is not ok for you.

What about those who work from home and don't have a boss or can't get fired? Taking a few minutes to play a game or two is fine, we all need a break. But what if the breaks get longer and take over the day? With a boss or coworkers around you, it's easier to stay on task. Not as easy when you're alone and not punching a timeclock. There is no accountability.

Well yeah someone can really forget about his job by playing games. However I think that if you work at home you also forget about the job but than you will just have to work overtime in home staying to early hours.

Well playing games are one of the best past time for me especially when I am alone here at home but of course I am playing when i am doing the laundry. I admit that in browse internet and responding some discussion here in mylot to while working because it keeps me awake but made sure that finished all my obligations before I do that. For me it hard to get focus if you do two things at the same time without mistakes, so I always finished what important things first before i browse and play games.

I am terrible for getting distracted online when I am at work. If I log onto the Internet to do a work related task, I will usually spend twice as long then doing non-work related stuff!

I have my rounders and schedules. I do visit social sites that doesn't pay but I know my limitations. I always give myself some break from earning sites. I set my goal everyday and that helps me to refrain from staying unproductive everyday while on the net.
