I think that it can be very important. You have to imagine if you set a certain time for someone to meet with you, and they were late. You would get irritated.

Well I think it depends on the stage where you stand. It is different for different personalities. For me hard working and patience are the most important criteria to be successful. But, of course, it depends on you how you handle it. To be a punctual is a good thing but not necessary condition for being successful.

I think being punctual can be a a factor to consider. Although this may not be the main reason but this can be of help. I am a very punctual person and I really don't want to be late. So most of the time I hold the keys of the office just like now, my supervisor noticed that I came to office very early most of the time, so he gave me the keys of our office.

I am the least punctual person I know (except for my sister). I am always late for work, for meetings. Very seldom I manage to get somewhere on time. Even if I start getting ready long before, there is always something showing up exactly in the end, and I cannot get there on time. Luckily, there is no need to be punctual on either of my jobs.

I think being punctual does not directly affect your success rate. However, I do believe that being punctual can be a factor in determining your character. It would also mean that you are pretty concern about time. It is also a good way of modeling in which you teach your subordinates by means of your action.
