What do you do while listening to Audio Books?

Believe it or not, I enjoy audio books. Our library has a huge collection and I have discovered I enjoy listening to a good book while I am doing artwork or crafts. Sometimes I even listen to an audio while I am playing a game on the computer. It keeps my mind busy and entertained while I am doing something that doesn't take much concentration. If I am just sewing, or doing embroidery or painting, it's nice to catch up on some of my favorite authors.

Ooh! Focus on the Family made some really amazing Chronicles of Narnia radio dramas that I listen to all the time. They're almost word for word the book but they're fully dramatized, so they're not really audio books.

Focus on the Family? Where do you find those, Ally? At the Library? In bookstores?

We got our first copies on Casset tape from the local Family Christian Bookstore, but when they released them on CD I brought them again online. Lots of Christian bookstore realitors like Lifeway, Mardels, and Family Christian store seem to carry them, and I've found them in major bookstores. I guess it would depend on the library if you could get them from the library. But Focus on the Family has lots of great stuff adapted to radio drama, C.S. Lewis's "The Screwtape Letters", Frances Hodgson Burnett's "The Secret Garden", and Corrie Ten Boom's "The Hiding Place" to name a few. If you can check them out or ask your library to order them, they're really good.

I don't listen to audio books. I've tried, but just can't get into them. If I have a book in front of me I can read for hours, but I lose interest very quickly when I try to listen.

I totally understand that, Nonersays. If I were to sit down and put an audiobook on to listen, I would probaly fall asleep or get really bored just sitting there. But when I am painting, beading, drawing, doing housework, driving... etc. audiobooks are very enjoyable for me. That's why I was asking what do others do if they like to listen to audiobooks. =)

Yeah, for long drives, I like to bring a good ACTION story to listen to. I have tried dramas and bios that made me sleepy though and that's not good when you are driving! Thank goodness for the CD changer in my car. I had to punch in some pop or rock to get me awake before I fell asleep at the wheel. HAH!! So I guess you can say I drive and listen "with caution." =)

I know my library now offers audio books but I have tried it. For one, I just love the feel of a book in my hand and for two, I don't have internet on my laptop, and since reading is my time to myself, I won't download and listen on the desktop where everyone else is.
Though I would like to see if I can even listen to one, because even in a good movie, if there is a slow scene, my mind wanders and sometimes I miss an important part. So I may not even like it due to that problem...

I can understand that, Carmel. I have quite a number of books myself and with my journaling and altered book collection still growing, I see no ending to read the old-fashioned way in most cases. But now and then when I have to do housework or while I am working on a craft/art project, I can't watch TV or hold a book. This is where listening to one comes in handy. I REALLY like those audio books that are dramatized with sounds and music also. I enjoyed audio books before they became popular by recording my own using a cassette recorder and many hours in a silent room reading my favorite stories to myself. I still have all those cassettes too. =)

I do remember listening to some stories on cassette, and now that I do have internet on my laptop, (in case you missed my most recent posts) so I might consider it, but another problem is, I do so much online, including listening to teachings every week, it would have to be a really good story for me to listen to it..

I tend not to like audio books because I can always read faster than whoever they've got reading the book for me, but like you, when I'm doing some sort of project I'll listen to an audio book. I've listened while out walking and while I've been working on some sewing projects. Unless I've got such a project though, I typically just choose to read the book myself.

Yes, I do agree. Just as I have mentioned above, I can't just sit there and listen to such books, but they are great to have and use while doing something else. What kind of audio books do you listen to? Do you get them from the library for free or do you buy them?

Okay. Sounds good. I would like to read... err hear "Treasure Island" myself. I bet that would be so cool to listen to while drawing a ship or a pirate. :)

I tend to get them from the library because they're kind of on the expensive side. My mom has a small collection that I've borrowed from. They've been mostly old classics, Alice in Wonderland, Treasure Island, and some books I'd already read like the Twilight saga and the Inheritence Cycle.

Hahahahah! I like those smilies you used. Too bad I have a way to go before I can use them. I believe I can't use smilies till I reach 500. Anyway, yes, I agree with you. I would probably fall asleep to the book also if I am lying in bed. :) And yes, that's why if I do something else, it would have be something that doesn't take a lot of concentration so I can pay attention to the story. =)

No, not often. Nowadays I tend to still read books and my Kindle. Audio books are only for when I am driving or crafting. =) Cute smilies!

I have purchased a few audio books and I will knit or cross stitch while listening to a good book.
I always enjoy them.
Nice to know others do to.

Yeah, crafts are great to work on while listening to a good book. I don't knit but I do everything from scrapbooking to beading. I would like to try walking while listening to a book also but the weather is so hot right now that it will have to wait. Walking may keep me out exercising more if I am listening to a good audio book.

I usually listen to my audio books while on a long drive or while taking a bath. If I listen in bed, I fall asleep and lose my place in the story!
