I have read thousands of books and enjoyed most of them but for me there will always be one favourite. That book is Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier and just hearing that opening line -"Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again" gives me goose bumps!!I just LOVE this book. I first read it as a young teenager, many years ago, after my godmother introduced me to Du Maurier's work and I was immediately hooked.
It is a book that I return to over and over again. If you have not read 'Rebecca', I envy you, you cannot unread the books you have read. You have all that mystery ahead of you, you are about to be completely and utterly absorbed in one of the best stories I have ever read.
Don't read 'Rebecca' expecting to read a classic love story, because that is not what it is. 'Rebecca' IS about love, both past and present, but it is also a thriller, dark, almost Gothic, creepy but most of all intriguing.
"Rebecca" is such a gripping tale that it fascinated the late Alfred Hitchcock, and chose this story to make into a film. But even Hitchcock - the 'Master of Suspense' , did not do justice to this gripping tale in his classic 1940 black and white film. 'Rebecca' remains one of my favourite and one of the most memorable books I have ever read.I recommend that you read it - it will have you gripped!!

I have always wanted to read Rebecca, and other Daphne du Maurier works like Jamaica Inn. They sound to be very interesting, more so when they turned out to have film adaptations by the great Alfred Hitchcock. I got to stumble upon some copies of these books in the local stores, but unfortunately I don't have the money to buy them. So as of now perhaps I still have to rely on the e-books floating here in the Internet. :(

Jamaica Inn is really good too. Like a lot of her works Jamaica Inn is set in the county of Cornwall and is a real place.I was lucky enough to visit the inn on Bodmin Moor a couple of years ago. It is an Georgian slate hung building with cobbled courtyard. It was built in 1750, as a coaching inn where tired travellers crossing the dangerous moors between Launceston and Bodmin would stay for a welcome rest. Not all the travellers were respectable travellers though, as the Inn was often used to hide away the contraband that had been smuggled ashore to the Cornish coast. In fact it is thought that the Inn may have got its name because the amount of trade it did in the rum that made it's unofficial way there.
In 1778 the Inn had a coach house, stables and a tack room added in a large extension. The inn was owned for a time by the novelist Alistair McLean but it
is best known as the setting for the book Jamaica Inn; Daphne du Maurier spent just one night there in 1930, after getting lost on the moors.
The atmosphere, history and legends that surrounded the inn inspired her work. In the book she incorporates historical facts about the area and also uses real places ( and sometimes people) from the area. One such place is the village of Altarnum and its vicarage which ( where in the book the wicked vicar livs) and also the chuch known as the "Cathedral of the Moor". Locals say that there is still a ’Jory’ family living in one of the villages of the Moors that probably inspired the character Tom Jory.
This is another book I would really recommend.

Wow, thanks for the info. That's good to know. I think that it is not surprising if an author would be inspired to incorporate the real events, places and people he/she had encountered in to the works he/she will ever create. Just like Daphne du Marier.
How I wish I could stumble upon copies of both of Rebecca and Jamaica Inn... And be able to buy them, at long last.

Hi there. My respond might be too late for your assignment, but I think I just want to suggest a good novel for your own reference. It's called "Not Without Laughter" by Langston Hughes. It's a very good novel in my opinion. It's about the life of black people after the slavery period.

The Wizard of Oz. You never can go wrong with that one! Always a classic.
Uhm... well that's about all the story books I know. I usually don't read fiction that much. I like things that actually teach you something about reality.
Hope you find just the right book you need!

There are so many good books that I've read in my life, of course that comes from the fact that I've been a reader since I was a young woman.
A list of the best books that I've read are:
Handle With Care - Jodi Picoult
The Lucky One - Nicholas Sparks
The Twilight Saga - Stephanie Meyer
The Hunger Games
anything by Lurlene McDaniel

Hi, Savagecabbage, I have many favourite books, but I'll suggest you to read the one I'm finishing now. This is "Shalimar the Clown", a 2005 novel by Salman Rushdie. This is the first novel by this famous author that I read. My daughter said that it was great and it turned out that she was right. It's a thick book but I hope that you'll like it. I wish you to have soon a vacation!

There are a huge lot of books out there that serve as a good read. I happen to delve in to different genres so I could see where the great books may be but as it turns out, there will always be a good one in these genres. You may like to get into the following.
Harry Potter Series by JK Rowling
Mabini's Ghost by Ambeth Ocampo (It's all about history, though)
Gone with the Wind by Margaret Mitchell
ABNKKBSNPLAKO by Bob Ong
The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee
Great Expectations by Charles Dickens
The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffeneger
Home: A Memoir of My Early Years by Julie Andrews (non-fiction, as well)
Like Water for Chocolate by Laura Esquivel
The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisberger
A Walk to Remember by Nicholas Sparks
These are only a few of the good reads. I still have to find out more. But if you happen to get hold of these, I hope you'll enjoy them! :)

For me its "The Purpose Driven Life" book of Rick Warren it was a spiritual book you will read that for 40 days also it was life changing and in the end there is a task given for you. I regret not finishing that book because im busy that time and I am not ready for the big task. But someday I know I will read that book again.
