Music Playing In Clothes Stores

I don't mind music being played in clothes stores but what I object to (usually in a big store like Debenhams) is, if you go to one section you get blasted with one song and if you go to another section something else is being played. Gives me a headache! Does this happen in stores where you are? Annoying isn't it? I have to come out if it gets too much for me, especially at Christmas-time when one song is quite enough thanks!

It is hard to go in to any store these days without being bombarded by some type of music. I don't mind music being played, but nine times out of ten, it is mainstream commercial pop cr@p that I don't like being played. Give me some real music to listen to! And Christmas time! Yep, as if the crowds were not enough to keep me away, those Christmas Carols pounding out relentlessly drive me insane!

No, it is not weird when you grow up with it. It was definitely weird for me when I spent a white Christmas in the USA. It was like being in a Hollywood movie, it was so foreign to me.

I don't really like snow but I would love to go to Lapland..just to see the reindeer as they have furry noses, don't you know. The only animal to do so..I think!

It must be weird hearing Christmas Carols in the sunshine. The news media make us feel terrible whenever they show Australian beaches at Christmas. Hard to believe it can be so warm there and so bloody cold here lol.

I have not witnessed different songs in different sections of the store. That would drive me crazy too. What I object to is the playing of loud hard rock music being played. When that happens I have to leave the store because it just gets me in a bad mood with a headache. I don't mind any other type of music but I do like it when its not played so loud that you can't think, its very frustrating!

I don't mind rock music (and there was a lot played in the Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas when we stayed there, it was great) but the really heavy stuff would annoy me as well, to be honest. I must be getting old!

HI Janey, I found this particularly annoying in HMV of all places. I often go in there and look at their cheap videos, but quite often I hear two different songs playing at the same time. I think it may be the staff having a bit of a laugh, but it's like GBH on my ears! And don't get me on to the subject of Xmas songs! Why the same ones every year? _Derek

It's the same ones because nothing decent has been brought out at Chrimbo for years. I should know, I have a Christmas CD lol. I don't know what's happening with HMV. I agree with you. The music on the ground floor is "competing" with music played upstairs where the over-priced DVDs are! Give me Amazon any day although it pains me to say it, as I like keeping people in work, irritating as some of them may be.

I usually don't go into large department stores, so I really don't notice that. I usually go to boutiques, thrift stores and non-department type stores (such as Men's Wearhouse, Victoria's Secret, etc.) for clothing, shoes, etc. for myself and my boyfriend.

I bet they all play music though..but I guess it will be just the one radio or whatever playing. Even I can cope with that lol.

Different song in different sections?? That's weird.. and absolutely will bring you headache. Usually they will just use from one main source otherwise it will be annoying like you said. I found it more interesting if they have music and songs to be played as it makes my shopping feel more fun but not with so many songs with it!!!(^^)

I wonder what it's like for the shop assistants? No doubt they can't say anything for fear of losing their jobs. At least I can put up with it for only a few minutes, then leave. They're stuck in the store for hours on end, not serving anybody because - like me - they've left!!

Not all the time but sometimes I've been in a store and was enjoying the music. It puts me a mood and then shopping becomes a good experience not just a function. I actually got upset once though because right in the middle of the dang gum song they interrupted with an anouncement. I rebelled by deciding I would not buy their products so there!

Haha! yes, it can work the other way, I agree. It doesn't happen very often with me anymore because I don't like the likes of Beyonce, etc. But, years ago if a track was played that I loved and it got cut off for whatever reason, I would storm out of the shop in disgust, just like you did!

i find that when we shop in teen aged geared stores, the blast the music so loud that you cannot even have a decent conversation with the people you are with (in my case, it is generally my two teenaged daughters).

Noooo... Then again, about the only big store I go to is Walmart and if they have background music I can't hear it... I'm not saying they don't - but I've been to a few too many rock concerts to have perfect hearing...

Lets see... The Beach Boys (twice), the Animals (back when they were cool), Paul Revere and the Raiders (back when THEY were cool), Deep Purple (left half way because it was SO loud!), Alice Cooper, Arlo Guthrie (twice), Sting, Elton John, Stevie Nicks, Styx, Paul McCartney... oh, another one in Houston that I can't remember, Trout Fishing in America (a bunch of times) but they really aren't a big group or extremely loud and The Bobs (twice).

Oh, if they played rock music everywhere (like in the Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas) then I'd be a happy bunny but it's all this boom, boom rubbish..or Beyonce. Which bands have you seen my friend..do tell.

Wow, what a great mix! I would absolutely love to see Stevie Nicks, I think she has an amazing voice. I can identify with the Deep Purple thing as I saw them when Joe Lynn Turner sang with them..and I was stood right at the back lol. I've also seen Elton John as he played at our football ground in - I think - 2005. He was excellent as he just got on with it playing all his hits!

I dont mind if there is music playing especially if its something nice and modern. What I hate is some of the stores have such loud music that I cant barely even hear the person next to me. My kids get scared when they go to stores like that. Hot topic plays really loud music and some of it is really creepy.

Yes, I feel sorry for the little ones when music is played loud like that. Not all people that go in stores are on their own or are couples.

I have never really noticed different songs playing in different areas of stores, I can see how that can be really annoying. I would not like it either, sometimes the music is just so loud anyways, but sometimes if I like the music I can't help singing along. Then when I walk by other people I will stop.

Haha! Gone are the days where I walked into a store and actually liked the music being played. The last time that happened was in the Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas way back in 2008. They were into playing rock music (not the really heavy stuff you understand) and I loved it. Some rock music is extremely uplifting and some tracks they played I'd not heard for a long time, so I was happy!

Yeah, it would be very annoying for the loud music, particularly for those music you don't like to hear.It seems it is better here for the big store. They would play the soft melody always and play the festival music if it happened to the New Year or other significant holiday. The most annoying thing is I go shopping with my friends. Shop next to shop would playing different music. They would play as louder as they can and try to cover the music from other store and then put a horn to announce their promoted product. It is really noise and it is not easy to talk with you friend under that situation.

That is the problem I am talking about. The most interesting for shopping is not what kind of stuff I am buying, it is the time I spend with friend and feeling I enjoy during the holiday. It would be good to wear the headphones, but if I happened to those shops with big horn announcing their promotion, I would escape to another place and avoid such annoying noise.

I suppose you could wear your own headphones so at least you're listening to music you like..but there again you wouldn't be able to chat to your friends with those on your head either!

Playing music in Clothes Stores is such ordinary and necessary thing that people have become accustomed here. The storekeepers think doing like this can interest customers and keep stores living and blast. So I used to be OK unless I am jarred. But now, I also think this is a question after hearing what you said. Haha.

Yes I have noticed songs playing in big stores too. I have experienced this in the H and M store. I was doing my shopping and a song plays. I am not really annoyed with this because they play trendy and upbeat songs. It really helps with the fun mood and the ambience. For me, having music in the store just makes shopping more fun. I think it would be boring if there will be no music in a large store. This is just my opinion. happy mylotting.

Well, in your case they are playing tracks you like which is fine..but what would happen if they played music you didn't like? Would you stay or would you go lol. I can feel a song coming on i.e. "Should I stay or Should I go now?" by The Clash. Real music you see! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZBPu7jJbJU

Hi Janey Because I live in Florida, we have lots of Cubans living here. You haven't lived till you have to listen to obnoxious Cuban music of course in Spanish...I too have to leave..It's way to annoying and so loud you can hear it at the far end of the mall...horrible! (Nothing against the Cubans, in fact they made Miami what it is today. So many of them escaped the wrath of Castro. They are hard working people and extremely proud. Their taste in music, however, leaves much to be desired. I just wish they would leave their music in the Salsa clubs and not in the dressing rooms at the mall!

Hi! Haha! That reminds me of a neighbour we had here for about 2 years. Torture it was. She was into Cuban music (along with her boyfriend, who was a social worker and should know better) and they thought nothing of having an impromptu party at 3am, playing a set of Bongo Drums. Apparently, they got engaged and "are saving up to get married in Cuba." It's a good job he's working then, it would take HER ages to save up on her benefits! Oh, and they've moved to somewhere with a garden. That's nice. We don't live in a rented property so I will be old and grey by the time that happens. Oh, well, at least we have BLUE SKY today. Love it!

I think this must be the reason why Debenhams is never full of people looking at their stuff. The punters must get annoyed by all the music being played so - like me - come out after about 10 minutes. I don't mind one track being played throughout the store (that's what it used to be like) but 3? Not good for concentration!
