Signs of impending motherhood

My son's partner is due in three weeks with my very first grandbaby, a girl. We had her shower on Sunday and she looked like she has been but they stopped by today and her belly is noticeably lower. I asked her if she knows where the baby's head is and she told me the baby is head down already.
Now, she had false labor pains on June 28th and 29th and, from personal experience, babies aren't too far from being born when false labor pains happen. (I went into false labor five weeks early then two weeks later my son was born.)
Does anyone here have any experience with false labor or know anything about the baby getting into position and the approximate time before the baby is born? I'm so very anxious that I'm already ready to bolt out of the house and get to the hospital the moment they call me. I'd love to be able to guesstimate when the baby will be born.

It won't be long now! When those false pains hit, it's practice for the real deal..lol. Hmmm...when is the next full moon anyway? My grandmother used to say to watch for that.
I am sooo excited for you! It was certainly a heart beating experience for me too. Are you going to be in there?

I'll tell ya, Jen, if I can be, I will be! We haven't discussed it but, if they will allow me, I won't say no. If they want me to just wait in the waiting room, I'll respect their wishes, though. I'll be talking to them both this weekend about it (assuming she holds out until then, lol) so we can get a plan made. The hospital she's going to is at least a 30-45 minute drive so I may even end up missing it all if I'm not ready, although her first baby took 17 hours so this one may take a little while and give me time to get there.
We're all getting very anxious. The mom-to-be told me that she can almost hear that Jeopardy theme song when they're waiting for the contestants to write down their final question.
Now, I HAVE to look up the next full moon! lol Ah, darn it! We already had one for July (the 3rd) and August's is the 2nd (and also the 31st, a blue moon!). Well, if that is true, the baby will be born only one day late instead of early like we're all thinking. I doubt she'll last until August at this point.
I hope my next discussion will be all about my new granddaughter. I know I'll sound exactly like you did.

Can't help you there, sorry. I never felt one labor pain, false or otherwise, my babies were scheduled C-sections. I kind of feel cheated but everything turned out okay so I'm just grateful.
However, I just happened to think--do you have a bag packed for yourself? I know a lot of people who have gotten to the hospital waiting for a child or grandchild only to find out they have nothing to read, nothing to snack on, no pencil for their puzzle book, no extra memory card for their camera. Do you have a bag packed and waiting by the door or in the garage so that you all have everything you need for the wait as well as the birth? You know my motto--be prepared!

Wow, dragon! I didn't know that you never experienced labor. Believe me, you didn't miss anything! lol I was in labor for 22 hours with my first son, 6 hours with my second although he ended up being a C-section because he refused to turn around and was hanging onto my ribs, parking his butt where his head should have been. He apparently liked it in there and didn't want to come out.
Yep, I do have a bag packed. I know it can be a long wait because of my first baby. I remember feeling sorry for everyone who was waiting since it took so long. I mean, I had something to do although it was getting quite boring and frustrating but my thoughts were of everyone in the waiting room. My husband kept falling asleep with his head on the bed, lucky him!
I have new batteries for my camera, my Nook (for reading and, of course, posting ), snacks, my meds for one day (just in case it takes awhile) and I have stuff to drink in the fridge waiting to be grabbed and tossed into the bag. I even keep a set of clothes where I can just throw them on if it's in the middle of the night.
See? You've taught me well on being prepared!

no those things are individual
not even a doctor can predict the exact time a baby will be born just the general time, because there are many things that can happen medically during that time.

Hi there, ( I just can't call you Mentalward..sorry)
I had 4 children and all were different. They just come when they are ready. With my first one, I had no false labor at all and I went in actually on my due date. The doctor told me that there were no signs of it happening within the next few days and set up an appointment to see me the following week. I was so bummed out. Well, late that night or actually wee hours of the following morning, my water broke and she was born the following afternoon.
Gosh...it's been so many years. My kids are all grown. I did get false labor one of them but I honestly could not tell you how long from the false pains to the real ones. When is the baby due? Also remember that doctors do from time to time completly get the due dates wrong. On my youngest, they were off by almost 2 months! All my babies were tiny and she was no exception. I'm tiny. I KNEW the date of conception because there was no other possible date that it could be. The doctor insisted that I miscalculated even though I told him that the date they gave me was literally impossible. I marked my calendar and hmmm...I was right. Even after she was born, they insisted that they were right even though she weighed 6'3....pretty big preemie, heh?
Congrats on your new granddaughter! You are going to have so so much fun! I have one granddaughter and two grandsons and I just love it. you will too. Your in for an experience of a lifetime. Are you going to be in the room when she is born?

All I really wanted to do here is re-affirm that I've always heard when the baby gets in position like that, atleast in this family, I believe it's not too long after before the baby is born. Usually two or three days, if not a week.
Honestly, a lot of stuff like that is down to wives tales and how it's happened in their family thus far.
Congratulations on becoming a grandparent.

Thanks, SC. I'm so very excited. This is the reward we get for being parents. We can spoil the grandkids rotten, then hand them back to their parents. lol
We're all getting very anxious. The mom-to-be had her weekly checkup today, well, yesterday now actually, and she called me when she got back. I was taking a nap myself and didn't hear the phone. She didn't leave a message so I guess it won't be happening TOO soon. I'm sure my son will call me when they're on their way to the hospital. He'd BETTER!

Hi MW! Well, I've never had Braxton Hicks (false labor) contractions. The only time that I had any kind of labor is when I was in labor for my daughter for almost 20 hours.
I think Braxton Hicks contractions can happen any time after the 5th month. My daughter had them with her first and third child.. both of them came early. Her second was very premature. We thought she was having false labor with him until it was evident that the baby was in trouble.
If she is already in her 8th month you will have a baby soon for sure. Within a month anyway.

Hi Marti
Well I had false labour from 6 months onwards with my Son but it was then my problems started so they did not class it as false Labour it was more a case of keeping the Baby there then I went into Labor on the 20 April the Day he was due but he was not born till April 26th at 12.28pm there are 17 hours of my Life missing there as I was going every 2 Minutes and they could not do anything for me
But I was told I would never have Children due to being raped for 2 years 5-7 years old
But I have known someone who had false Labor and her Baby was actually born 3 Days later I think it just depends on the Baby and when they are ready to enter this world, I hope little one arrives soon
big Hugs

It happened to my daughter 1 year ago when my grandson seems want to come out sooner than his birth date. My daughter had experienced labor pains and blood spot but when we asked the doctor she told us that's only a sign or early labor but does not mean the baby will come out. Observed the time of pains normally if the pains continue with the interval of every 15 minutes up to 5 mins that's the sign of giving birth. My daughter last about of 12 hrs or labor and ended up to Cesarean section because she loses to much water but the baby is lazy to go out. Congratulation for being a grandma welcome to the club .
