Do you think it's more valuable to read books than to watch movies?

I had an argument with one of my students on which is better- reading books or watching movies. I love reading books and I stand on this idea. It seems like I'm on another world, another life. It seems like I'm the main character of the book. I can feel the emotions really well. At the same time, I can gain new expressions. I could be biased but this is what I feel and what I believe in. How about you? Which is better for you?

I think books are much better than films due to high amount of detail that is in a book compared to a film.A very good example of this is harry potter the books are much better than the films as they have much more detail than the films and whole events are missing from the films. However i tend to watch more films than read books as it is easier to watch a film than read a book especially after a long day and i suppose im to lazy to read as much as i should.

I do agree with you for the reasons that there are some movies which is already highly exaggerated and the real content of the story is being denied. It may sounds tiring for those who doesn't like to read book but guess what, If you will just have to try opening your pasion on reading maybe you will realized and find yourself bringing some books anywhere!

Personally I think this is an argument that is not always justified as in does the person really like to read or not? I know also for most people it is just easier to watch a movie version of a book instead, as it takes less time. I know when it comes to reading for myself, it often depends on my mood. There have been times I will both read the book and watch the movie just to see some of the differences there are in there.

I guess it depends on whether you are watching fictional movies or non-fiction educational documentaries, etc. Personally I have started reading a lot of books, real true-world facts and information is what I find interesting and useful. I'm not into television soaps or fictional movies much at all, I hardly ever watch television in fact. It just doesn't interest me, soaps and such-like TV programs are just a load of meaningless nonsense that somebody made up. Artistic and creative perhaps but not very useful in real life.

I love to read and I also love to watch movies, but if I had to choose only one thing I would choose books. Sometimes I watch a movie and read the book behind the movie as well and I usually think that the book is better than the movie because the book contains more details and it easier for me understand the story and the character's thoughts and emotions when I read a book. I usually only watch one or two movies before I need a break, but I can read for many, many hours if I have found a really interesting book. Another good thing about the books is the fact that you can read everywhere, and I always carry a book. I can't do the same thing with the movies that I watch.

I don't think I could actually choose between reading books and watching movies. These are both hobbies that I really love to do. I terribly enjoy consuming books and other materials and the same goes with seeing some great cinematic obras. For me both are beneficial in some similar as well as different ways. For example, I know that reading certainly helps in widening one's vocabulary, but watching local and foreign films have given me a hand to become more adept and confident in speaking and writing in English and Filipino languages. While reading is and auditory activity, and watching a visual one, both could reach out to my imagination and help me create or relive the scenes in my mind. I have to work alone on imagining how a character would speak the dialogues and appreciate them when it comes to reading, but with watching the scenes coming out of the screen, I only have to listen to their delivery of the lines, sit back and enjoy the execution of the dialogue exchange. These are only some of the things I could come up as of now. I really couldn't say which one is better from another. :)

I have to say books. I usually choose a movie or book depending upon my mood, and it's usually reading. I can't really explain why, I'm just a bookwhorm and happy about it. :)

For me books are more valuable than watching movies. Why? It simply because movie are just a short and summarize of a story. It never seen the every detail of it. Unlike the books every words are important. You don't need to summarize the story and you can read every detail and every thing is there. And by reading book you will also learn and enhance your imagination.

It's reading books for me. It's lesser exposure to radiation than watching in front of the TV like you're being hypnotized. Reading books widens my vocabulary, improves one's reading comprehension, and pronunciation (especially when I am reading aloud). Although watching movies is sometimes okay--especially when the film is an action movie--for me, I think it is better to STILL read books...at least I exercise my brain more in reading than just watching people move behind the screen.

I've always loved reading. It's relaxing, triggers your imagination and takes you into a whole other world. I do watch movies too, but don't find it as rewarding. A book can stay in my memory for ages. With a movie, I usually forget what it was about after a while.

Some stories are better read in their printed version, complete and unabriged. These books make you want to read on and on, no matter how thick they are. But some stories are better on movies. I find modern writers that write their books in movie version. Reading it made you feel like watching the movie. Have you ever read these kind of books? And then there are works that won't really matter whether you read it or watch it in movies.

I've noticed (even more recently) that films made based on books can lack the detail of things within the book, now that may seem like I'm saying read books, but I'm not, what I'm saying is why not do both, don't rule either of them out. But if you are going to do both then read the book first so you can use your own imagination rather than the films perspective or telling of the story, that way you can be more creative with characters and other objects.

Reading books needs more active brain participation than watching a movie. It takes concentration to really get in the story! Both are fun in my opinion but it depends whether I m extremely tired or not. Watching movies can be very relaxing and enjoyable as well.
