What is the measure of greatness?

The King of Comedy, Dolphy, is gone. Though it pained me to see him go, it did not come as a surprise for me due to his lingering illness. Tributes from different sectors of society come pouring. This made me ponder on what makes a person great? I see that popularity and fame play a vital role in the greatness of a person. When one is popular, one is always in the scrutinizing eyes of the public. The adulation of people lifts one to a pedestal of greatness. Is a more popular figure greater than a less popular one? Maybe? Can one be great in obscurity? I don't know? What is your take on this?

This discussion reminded me of an Albert Einstein quotation - " Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value." I think Dolphy was able to accomplished both, he will be truly missed. ^_^

I like that quotation especially the term "man of value". We may not be as popular as the King of Comedy and change the country, but in our own little ways, we can be a man of value to our families, to our friends and to others we interact with...

We must always try to add value to other people's lives. It is the way that makes us truly human.^_^

Greatness for me will truly depend on the person's definition of the word. But great values that I admire on Mang Dolphy is his kind heart and humbleness.

Very true! The King of Comedy has exemplified kindheartedness and humility as affirmed, not only by the industry of which he is a part of, but by all who were able to interact with him.

For me, the greatness of any human being can not be measured on how popular he/she is/was.
Although these old ones (or not so old maybe) are much greater actors/actress than the younger ones, their experience in this industry is vast compare to the younger generations.
Well a good example is the Comedy King Dolphy which has produced/starred in more than 200 films.

I didn't realize how good Dolphy was until I saw the tributes for him on TV. I did not even admire him that much until I have learned of the kindness that he shared to everyone else. But after I get to have the knowledge of all his accomplishments, kind-heartedness, helpfulness, etc., it made me teary-eyed and realized how I missed him so much on TV.
His popularity did not only come from being him, the King of Comedy, but also from his kindness, generosity, and humanly treatment for everyone without discrimination of any sorts; and this touched their lives and made him part of their households. With this, he could be our role model for us to make our lives more meaningful and worth living for.

Defining success depends upon the person perceiving it. One person may define it based on monetary earnings while another may look at success as equivalent to fame. Some may even define success as helping other people. It all depends upon the person on how he puts meaning to the word "success."
