struggling musician...

Now in his late 50's this musician (folk singer, acoustic artist) still struggles to get some food on the table. He calls himself "overstaying" but he can't do anything. He chose to pursue his passion and that's what he did. As a young man, that was more than 30 years ago, he was the star in our locality. All the girls went crazy over him and attended his gigs regularly. He was the "celebrity" in our place. In fact I was into many of his shows and I had seen how the audience loved him. Now almost 60, he still does what he used to do but this time, he had to knock on people's doors for him to get something. I mean, he would go from bar to bar asking if they need a singer or an acoustic artist but there are already several young artists who are more preferred than the older ones. So this artist struggles day-to-day to make a living from his music and passion. I find this very sad because of the bleakness of the industry. There is no real support from the government and elsewhere. I want to reactions to this please. Any suggestions how struggling artists like this one could get some help.

There's a saying that goes, "Those who cannot do, teach". If the career is over and the record deal hasn't happened, maybe it's time to think of creative ways to earn an income from the talent. I'm also a musician (just a hobbyist though) - in fact, an acoustic guitar player - so the threat of music programs within public schools or other lacking resources to keep the love of the art alive and well is a concern for me. With teaching music, this individual can kill two birds with one stone, proverbially speaking, by teaching others music and receiving compensation.

That is a very good suggestion which I have to relay to him. I think he is following up gigs that he can do once a week.
