Behavior Inside a PUJ

Philippines

One habit I inherited from my father is observing people. One of the situations where I give in to this habit is inside a PUJ, a Public Utility Jeepney. The small group of persons inside the PUJ is a microcosm of our country. It is now a fact that the first seats to be occupied are those behind the PUJ and the last are those behind the front seats, no matter how unsystematic this is, how uncomfortable this is for everyone inside. No one wants to be an "unofficial conductor", a servant handing over the fares and changes between the driver and the passengers. When the PUJ stops, it is because a passenger may be alighting or may be boarding. People are so pathetic to give way so that the passenger can easily alight or take his seat. Other passengers are even hesitant to take other's fare and hand it over to the driver. And if there is a good soul willing to do so, he would seldom be thanked for his deed. Men seat as if they can keep their legs together. Women seat sideways. We have lost our "right" values. If we are like this, the Philippines will never prosper. How, why did we end up like this?

I agree to what you just have observed. The norms in public transportation are a vivid example of Filipinos' lack of discipline and selfishness. Of course, I understand that almost everybody is not willing to be a ready hand for the driver, and I am totally clueless on how to solve this. I think this stem from the desire to be comfortable at most times. This is also a trait adamant in Filipinos - to think of short term achievement of comfort rather than the long term effect of time saving. I do hope this kind of system in the philippines change.

i hate this kind of people too and annoying me too, sometimes even if they already that there is a passenger will ride they still never move to give way or to give a spare seat for the new passenger, until you will say the word "excuse me",and even those people who don't hear you to pass the fare of passenger even they near to the driver.

Hi, I understand quite well your predicament and surely it is sad to know that there are those who are not so giving in those times. But I think it is also understandble sometimes that there are instances that we want to be near the entrance/exit in order for us to easily alight from the jeepney especially when we are in a rush or just a short ride. However, for senior citizens, pregnant women, children, persons with disability, et al, I think it is no excuse to not give way to them.:)

Maybe the change may start from each of us. It would really be hard to impose the change in values like discipline to somebody else. Maybe it will benefit everybody by striving to become a role model.
