Hello. This was the first Murakami book I've read and I would recommend anyone who has never read any of his books to start with this one. At the beginning I thought it was rather draggy and depressing with his love being thought hopeless. And although it was depressing, that nature of tone was rather beautiful, in missing someone you love. There is little hope at the end but it was rather moving and profound. It is not the usual 'summer read' because of its heartbreaking themes.

I guess you are a boy^^ Maybe boys intend to like it because the writer telling this story in the view of a young man.Though having already heard of this book when I was in senior shool,I never tried to read it.A week ago,I found one of my favorite singer also like this book,so I moved on. I don't like it maybe because there are something negtive and,the fundamental key is too gray(it seems many Japanese literature are like this)But I was still impressed,by its frequent describing of the scene,by its special dialogues.

Oh my gosh. I am a girl. LOL. But it is true, I do like male characters point of views. Mostly all my books are. Anyway, yes it was so negative and somehow the description of the scenes was amazing. That actually kept the light going. Have you watched the movie? http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1270842/ And also, if you thought Norwegian Wood was depressing, DO NOT read Kafka on the Shore.

Totally agree!I like Ailing Zhang very much and I have read several biography of her as well as her work Love in a Fallen City. Her style is somewhat like a writer of Qing Dynasty-Xueqin Cao.She is good at describing the most exquisite feelings, maybe caused by her carecter and her childhood experience.

bIt's quite famous in Japan and China, but I don't know if it's also so popular in other countries. The book was written in 1987 by a Japanese writer, telling about a young loving story. Some people like it,but some find it difficult to understand,so it's depend on their own taste.Though it's classic,I don't like it.If you are interested, you may try to read it.
