I always hate it when i have my period, just like yesterday when we were at the beach, i could not get myself to go and swim and play in the water as my period is quite strong.
but it also got me wondering that is why i made discussion as some people may know and clarify, how about athletes particularly swimmers, how do they swim especially during competitions when they have their period? are tampons safe to use? wont it make the water bleed I know that napkins are not suitable as it will soak in water and get wet...and if your menstruation is strong it will definitely bleed..gross i know sorry. But really how about swimmers? anyone knows about it?
just curious, i can be naive when it comes to these stuff sometimes lol.. but i was really bummed out yesterday as i was not able to wade in the water with my kids as it was that strong. i might turn the sea red.

When your on your period no matter how stronger or light it is you can always get in the water while on your period. If you have ever taken a shower or bath you find that the water will not turn red and if you bleed into the water normally it won't change color or anything. I really hate the water so I never go to the pool or to the beach ever lucky me.

Your the third person I saw write this and when I shower and have my period the blood runs down my legs. If I bathe in water when I have my period the water turns red. Maybe I just bleed way heavier then other people but I dont know. I remember a friend of mine took another friend of hers on vacation. Her friend couldnt use tampons so she went in the water with a maxipad on and blood started getting in the water. How gross.

lucky you. i am not a water person but when i find the water clear and nice to swim in, i would go and wade in it..just that having periods during those times can be really uncomfortable.

As far as I know, the menstrual flow stops temporarily while in the water. So yes, we can still swim and do water stuff even on our period-as long as we won't forget to take off the pad or tampon or else....gah!
But personally, whenever it's my time of the month, I don't wanna move around a lot or even go somewhere. Because I always have horrible cramps and I'm no fun to be with. :(

I know how you feel, I wasn't able to enjoy my nephew's pool party either because I had my period. Though, it would stock upon contact with water, I just can't risk it because the last time I did that, it took me several days to recuperate from very strong abdominal cramps! whew!
Indeed it's difficult and uncomfortable to be a lady during those days!
As for the swimmers, as I said earlier, it temporarily stops when you're wet. So probably they're used to it. But I sure would hate it if that happened during competitions. Unless of course, they do something about it like inducing it before competitions so that they wouldn't have them on the competition itself.
Have a great MyLot experience ahead!

Yeah, it's possible to induce it. My ob-gyne lets me take some pills (not the contraceptive ones) when my period is absent for a month or so, after 5 pills (5 days) I start to get my period. But I only do that to regulate my period because I miss it once or twice.

Yeah, have her consult her ob-gyne just to be sure. I don't want to disclose the pill I am taking (or took) because people might try to self-medicate once they read it.
It does help a lot but as far as I can remember, it's not also something to take all the time.

This may scare you but I certainly don't mean for it to but I have to tell you what I've heard in order to prepare you. Tampons aren't for everyone however, if and when you decide you want to try using tampons, you need to have someone nearby just in case you go into shock so the person who's with you can pull it out. I know that sounds gross and I don't mean for it to be but it's the truth. I had a friend who tried it one time and thankfully another friend was nearby because this gal went into shock and the other friend pulled it out and she was fine. Now that's a rare case to happen BUT it does happen to some so it's best to have someone nearby just in case so they can come to your aid if need be.
Now tampons are pretty easy to use. You insert it and push it as far up inside of you as you can. It should stop the bleeding because it's something like a plug however, some might seep out but it'll be very little. You won't feel the tampon up inside of you and yes, you can swim with a tampon! No blood will show up in the water.
Hope this info helps in some small way! Good luck!

Yes, it was a medical condition that caused her to go into shock because of the tampons. I'm not sure as to why or what it was but yeah, it happened.

why did she go into a shock? was it a reaction with the tampons?

As far as I know swimmers use tampoons, maybe especially made for them (swimmers)
Periods also stops (temporarily or lessens) when soak on waters.
So you did not enjoy swimming yesterday then?...

umh, i don't hate period at all, i will be very worry if it comes late or not normal. I used to get some times..going to beach with period...and for sure i can't swim and play in the water at all, but i still have the others way to enjoy such as walking on the sand or just soak my hand in water only...
about swimmers, i think they may take some medicine to delay their period whenever they wants, doctors will help them

but birth pills are for well..controlling birth and the hormones so as to prevent pregnancy but not the period. you still get your period even if you are using birth pills..

i really do not know there is such a thing as a pill to stop the period

Women athletes tend to have lighter periods, and some do not have any periods at all until they stop training. The stress and strain of building muscles and competing combined with the fact that they have very little body fat often keeps the body from menstruating - the body knows that it does not have sufficient means to sustain a baby, which often causes hormone levels tend to change ... it is like the body has a "self-preservation" mechanism.

Now that explains a lot for them, their body tends to adapt to the things they usually do and it affects the hormone responsible for the menstrual cycle.

Women can take the pill continuously and not bleed, have an implant in the arm for 3 years and not bleed or have tubes tied - after having kids of course!
I stopped swimming before i startd my womanhood but have heard that it can stop when in water, body reaction to water i guess..

I do agree with purple here, my office mate who had ligation - had her tubes tied is still having her monthly period but it prevents her from being pregnant again, thus stopping fertilization not the period... and i took pills before too and i still get my monthly period regularly...

Taking the pill or having your tubes tied will not stop menstruation ... it will just prevent eggs from being released from the ovary and/or implanting in the uterus. In addition, the implant can lessen or stop periods, but that is not guaranteed. Women can still have periods with the implants, but again, they do not release eggs, which helps to prevent pregnancy.

I can feel you, I hate having period too, that's the most nightmare for me. mine only lasted for 22 days until I have it again. I use ultra thin pads to make me feel more comfortable than ordinary pads, with wings is a must. I've researched some on Diva cups and tampons, some says it's safe and it feels almost nothing at all but some says they had tampons accident. I wanted to try it but scared of it's CONS.

But this is the God gift because without this we cant born a child and you feel happy with your kids due to this period so dont forget it. I know sometime we hate it but this is natural thing which is necessary in women's body. But sometime face critical problem like my niece got a disease poly cyst overy in left side and her blooding is continues gone since last month. Dr. said this disease is not curable. do you heard about this disease.

Yes i believe that it is God's gift and it also means we are healthy but i really do not wish to have any more kids too...
My ob-gyne mentioned women having cysts in their ovaries and it can be quite common surekharathi but she said it is curable and can be removed and operated...

I had my swimming class when I was in college and some of my classmates said to our professor that they cant swim because they have their periods but our professor said that if you are in the water specially if the water is cold, your period temporary stops. Nothing bad happened that day *no red tides :)), so I guess it works. Hope this helps, good day and God bless

At that time I also thought that they are just making excuses to avoid getting in the water because the water is too cold :p

I have practiced swimming!in the water, my period ends..so it's not a big problem! In my country tampons are super popular and common, special Ob! I never used pads (only emergency, if someone gave me, but never for I use in swimming pool!)

nice thinking! :D I also have experienced swimming at the beach with my period. But that was not my first day. It was already during the later part where my flow is already slow. I noticed it, my period stopped. And it did not come back until the following day.
But I will never try on my first 4 days. I can't imagine how gross this will be. Even if I had proven that it will stop under water, I still reserve some doubts that it will not apply to everybody. ;) I do not want to be the center of everyone's attention seeing me like being bitten by a shark while swimming. LOL!

i guess contraceptive pills are not use to regulate the time of the period but to regulate the hormone that's responsible for ovulation

When you have your period, the endometrial lining comes away from your uterus. Most women do not have a constant flow, it comes in bits and pieces. Yes the amount varies from person to person.
If you want to go swimming you can use a tampon and you will be fine. Unless of course you have very heavy periods with severe cramping then you should not go swimming, but you can certainly remain active otherwise.

As u said if u think it is strong then better not go into clear water as it may be embrassing .Maybe can postpone the trip to the beach ,seaside or swimming pool while having period. Other days will be more suitable and more comfortable for your too. My girlfriend usually avoid these watery places when she is having period , rather like to window shopping or go to the cinema.

Well that was a family event as it was nephews birthday, it would be totally bad to postpone it for the sake of me having a period, so i just went with it and just stayed away from the water.

I was wondering about the same thing too LOL. What makes it even more difficult for me is my periods are irregular. It's difficult to plan to go to the beach when I don't have any idea when my period will come.
Look for the article "How to Swim when you are on your period" on wikihow.com. It is very informative. I think a lot of swimmers wear tampon. I've never tried it though and have no intention of trying it. I'd love to try the cloth pads. Unfortunately, it's not available in our country. I'm following a blog named "askmewhats". The author has a post about cloth pads and a link to a store where she bought hers.

I have not seen tampons either as it is not common here in Philippines. So it really makes me wonder if that is useful.
