Going for a doctorate degree after taking a master's degree is not mandatory. In fact, I believe it is up to the person. What are his plans? What does he want. If he wants to have a PHD and he can afford it, then he can. No one should tell him that he can't when he wants it and is prepared to work hard for it. If he prefers to find a job instead, then that's okay, too. If he wants both and he can handle it, he can choose to do so.

True. That's why people ask for advice, opinions, and suggestions. Part of the decision making process is to consider the pros and cons and weighing things. But in the end, the person concerned will make the final decision.

If you want an academic career (researcher at a university, professor, etc) then they should. For some, it might be good to work for a year or two first, and then continue, other can do it directly or even start during their master thesis. I think a few countries have started with something they call researchers school, you apply for a PhD before you have finished your master. Then you get half salary the last year of the master and the first year of the PhD, and take the courses you need.
Also if you want to do research on something for some years, maybe something that's not so easy to work with outside the university. Not everyone continue working with it afterwards, but you get some years to do just exactly what you want.
One should be prepared for quite a lot of work, unusual working hours and some stress at the end :-)

Many thanks for your detailed discussions and suggestions. Actually, I have some worries about further study on PHD. My major is relevant to high pressure science. It isn't a traditional subject, but I still have some interests on it,at least at the moment. But regretfully the most advanced techniques and labs are in foreign countries. I have some fears and worries about studying abroad alone, especially getting those boring scores necessary for a doctor degree.Research life will be OK for me,but studying abroad means that I must accept the separation to my family, especially my boyfriend.I am confused.

In my country, most people seek for jobs after their masters. In my opinion, PhD is needed only for those who want to do research on that field and are really knowledgeable about it. For others, in the financial and economic times of today, it's more sensible to find a proper job, if they want a nice house/flat, to live independetly and eventually settle down and start a family, because for that, they need a stable financial background, and they can't find a job while doing PhD which pays enough for that.

Well as per what I think, it should be left for the student to decide whether he wants to continue studying or now wants to enter into professional line. I am about to commence my graduation course from 1st of next month. As for now I am planning to get into jobs if I have some good firms for me to work into. It also will depend on the initial salary packages which attract us at first. But on the other hand I would also look forward for higher studies if I feel I am getting fairly good into the subject and I can end up mastering this subject. I have left it for the upcoming years to let myself "flow" into one of the two arenas.
I hope I have provided you with something of your use. THANK YOU

Oh. I have same confusion at this moment. I choose to make two preparations for this topic. We can seek for jobs while prepare for the exmination for PHD students. If a good job is offered, it will be nice. But if not, choosing to start further study will be OK then.

I think PhD is only needed for those who'd like to pursue an academe career. It's not necessary for those who's go for business or employment.
Here in my country most just go for Masters and never go for the PhD at all. I think it's better if you just go for a job first prior to taking up PhD because it costs a lot of finish a PhD.
Have a great MyLot experience ahead!

I really miss my school time.
In my opinion,if you have the opportunity to study as PHD students, pls go on.
The study time is very limit and the working time is so long,so pls treasure your school time and get knowledge as much as possible before you start to work.
