Should I be happy about it?

A couple of co - workers have to take a couple of days off, or some a week off. It meant that at my work place gonna be short - handed. Today our supervisor told us, since we are gonna be short - handed, if we can stay overtime that will be great. For while, we hadn't gotten any overtime hours, should I be happy about it? But think about it, some of our co - workers either take sick days, or some of them really need medical care. Am I taking advantage of it? Anyway, I like to have some extra overtime, so I can make some extra money, but I also want my co - workers to get well soon too.

I also experienced this kind of situation. Though you will get an extra money from your overtime job but working might be a little sad. Of course, you will miss your co-workers.:( The most important thing to handle is our health condition. Working for many hours might give us health problems in the future.. Stay Healthy!

Of course you are not happy about your co-worker's situation and you are not responsible for it. Take it as a blessing and make some extra money through your overtime.

Getting paid overtime because you are needed at work is not taking advantage of the situation. It doing the company a favor, so you should be happy about being useful to the company at the same time being compensated appropriately. However, if everyone seems to be missing due to health problems, the management should do something about it, either the work itself is not healthy for the workers or its not a healthy working environment.

The situation is not under your control. When there is short-handedness in work place, in order to maintain the same productivity, overtime is inevitably the solution if the other workers are able to do longer hours. Being able to work overtime, you have helped to solve a problem for your company. Getting paid for your overtime is the rightful remuneration for your efforts - that is not an extra. By right there should not be any overtime work if there are enough manpower but when it happens, then you just do more and earn more. You did not ask for it nor it could be wished.

In my mind, some overtime can not be avoid, and this situation will happen in any company. But if the overtime work is too much then it will do harm to our health. So I also hope your co-workers will get well soon.

Wow, that's a tough call. I remember reading somewhere, that we work hard so we can afford some quality health care in case we get sick from working too hard, lol!
I guess it's all about setting priorities and making sure that the same is disseminated to the rest of your workmates that all of you may work together to meet the set goals. Of course there should be deadlines but it has to be realistic enough. Getting overtime hours means getting overtime pay and the more pay we take home the better for us, but as always, everything should be taken in moderation. Too much overtime will not only put the already "feeling sick" workers out on commission but it may also affect the "healthy" ones. What's the point of taking home a higher paycheck if it will be spent in buying meds and health care? Wouldn't it be better to enjoy it in some other way?
Take it easy! Slowly but surely. Besides when tomorrow comes, there will always be work to do. It will never be done. If it is, then we will no longer be needed :)
