How To Potty Train Your Puppy

This is not a tutorial. This is a question. We just brought home our little husky puppy. She's adorable, beautiful and all that stuff. In two days we have her doing her number 1 business on her potty patch. We thought that was it. But she's not doing her number 2 business. Apparently she thinks that can be done in the kitchen. LOL. Any thoughts on how to train her or am I just not giving her a chance? Any advice is most appreciated.

Is this puppy from a puppy mill or pet store? If not, then you can easily train her using a crate. Of course you might be if the dog is from a puppy mill or pet store, but usually the mistreatment of the dog in those places, they can see the crate as a horrible punishment, and not a natural "den"
See, dogs in the wild use dens, and they never use the bathroom in their den, so by getting a crate where your dog can stand and turn around, but not so big that she can pee in the corner and then lay down on the other side. So the first step is determining the crate size. My dogs are close to 50 pounds, but because they share the crate, the size is one that a dog that is 70-100 pounds would use.
Next, you need to let her out often. (You didn't say how old, so I am assuming she is just weeks old?) Even during the night, you may have to let her out of the crate a couple time, this only lasts for about 6 weeks, but then she should be able to hold it over night.
You also need to get something like woolite oxygen spray. This you use after the dogs has had an accident, because it removes the odor. (Another tip, a dog will continue to use the same spot if they can still smell the urine or where they dumped)
If she does have an accident, you need to point it out, with a firm face, (They can read us easily, make sure she knows you are NOT happy) and then take her outside. Also, when you do take her outside, make sure you make a BIG DEAL if she does anything, this will send a message that by going outside, it is good, but inside, it is bad.
Now, back to the crate, the only time my dogs are in their crates for long periods of time, is overnight. During the day, the most I allow it is maybe up to 7 hours, but since I don't have an outside job, I am able to keep the hours down to a minimum of maybe 4 hours.
Also, puppies need to run and play, make sure she gets plenty of exercise. If you need any more tips on using a crate for housebreaking your dog, just let me know. I had my girls trained within just a coupe weeks..

I don't think we did a good job with the crate training. Although, she has access to it and she goes into it all by herself but we never closed it. The crate opens into the hallway which we have fenced off when we leave for work. She's never gone potty in her crate. May I ask, what is the purpose of the crate exactly? Is it just to train them to sleep overnight?
Our puppy is 10 weeks old and she's doing well now. She's potty trained. Great advice. Thanks so much.

Okay, 10 weeks she is still little, but should by now not have many accidents.
The purpose of the crate is, when you close the door and the dog has to go, she won't go, but will bark/whine and then you let her out. I only closed my girls in on three occasions.
1.I was doing something, homework, cooking dinner, anything where I am not constantly watching for that "posture" to show they were getting ready to go.
2.Overnight, and at 10 weeks, she might still need to go out once a night, but will soon be able to hold it. But since she has not had to "hold" it, it may take a little while longer.
3.When I leave. Even if I were to go outside for a few minutes, they went into the crate.
Now, since both are house broken, I leave it opened for them to come and go as they please..They love their crate because it was never used as punishment. In fact I wish I had my camera ready the other day to video tape Ciara. Both dogs were in the living room and the crate is in the kitchen. I accidentally closed the door to the crate, (not locking it, it was just pushed shut) and I started cooking. Ciara came in, and used her nose to pen the door and walk in..(She only wanted to be close by in case I dropped a morsel for her
) So, that is an example where a crate is used to house break a dog, and if done right, the dog won't be afraid of the crate, and even takes the time and energy to go in when they want..:)

I always just kept a close eye out and when the pup would sniff around or begin to squat I'd take him or her outside and praise them when they went. This way it only took a couple of days. Peeing was harder but the whole key is just observation and action.
Never, ever hit the dog! and don't bother rubbing their nose in it because less than a minute after they do something like that they forget it. They won't know why you're being so cruel to them.

My son got a little chihuahua (chee-hoo-a-hoo-a
) a few months ago and uses puppy potty pads that have scents that make them want to potty on the pads. Sasha is only 2 pounds so her leavings are pretty scant, even though she might miss the pads occasionally. They work really well!
Sasha just got spayed yesterday. She had an accident in the kitchen and my son told her she had a pass on that one. The next time she pottied it was on the pads. in the bathroom. Kindness always wins out, presuming no other problems with previous owners or present owners. Dogs are so willing to please!!

Puppies have a few moments of the day when they do their number 1 and number 2 business.
- first thing when they wake up in the morning
- a few moments after they eat
- a few moments after they drink water
- when you expect the less, during a play session.
You have to be one step before your puppy. Take her to the potty patch in all the moment from the list above. Stay there with her until she does what you want her to do. Congratulate her with enthusiasm when she does the right thing.
Be patient, because she's only a puppy, she's like a few months baby.

Thanks for the list. Yes, all this patience is paying off. She's a good girl. And we let her know it. Thanks. I love all these pointers. ![](/Content/images/emotes/thumbup.gif)
