It's Time for the Fair!

Baby Blanket - This is a baby blanket that I crocheted for an online friend last year for the cyber baby shower we held for her.

Our county fair will be coming up in a few weeks and although I love going to such things, I've lived here for 5 years and haven't been to the county fair in my area. Weird, huh? This year, I'm determined to go. Unless we have another week of 100* weather, there's no excuse for me not to go at least once because veterans get in free. I've also never entered anything in the county fair, but this year I'd really like to enter something in crochet, so I'm working on a baby blanket or two to toss out there. I wish I had gone before so I could see what kind of competition I'm up against, but even if I don't win anything (and I'm not getting my hopes up, by any stretch), I think it would be a nice experience and a big step outside of my comfort zone. Have you ever entered any knit, crochet, or other craft projects in your county fair? Did you win a blue ribbon or other prize?

Heck, I've lived in Texas for 57 years and never been to the Texas State Fair - my mother never went until my bro lived in the Dallas area...

When I lived in Ohio during my high school years...I went to the Ohio State Fair 3 times every year! Once with my family and we looked at all the farm animals and outdoor things, plants and some hand crafts, once with my boyfriend and we looked at whatever he wanted to look at... I didn't care, just fun to be with him...and I went with my girlfrieds..and we looked at everything but the farm animals and outdoor stuff..mainly the hand crafts, the cooking/baking stuff and the area with all the things for sale booths. It was so much fun! Been in CA for 35 years now and have been to the LA County fair maybe 3 times...maybe in the first 5 years of being here. After that, it just got to crowded and to congested and more "stuff for sale" than stuff to look at. Haven't been to the Orange Country fair but once in those years..again...way back 30 or so ago. The CA ones are junk compared to that Ohio one. But then again I guess is is a different group of people in the states. I would love to go to a smaller county fair that is there for the reason it is supposed to be there. WHile in Ohio, We also went to the Strawberry Festival, and the Circleville Pumpkin SHow and pretty much hit most within our basic area...it was so much fun and I sure miss that. I wish they'd have them here... but they dont! I'd love to have an entry in to a craft exhibit or a baking exhibit. You should do it just for the sake of being able to do it!

The last state fair that I went to was in Minnesota, probably 1995 or thereabouts. I hope to get to the Ohio State Fair this year too, but it's about an hour or so away, and I hate leaving the dogs all day.

I have never gone to county fair. I have gone to the state fair. I have never entered anything. Just not my thing to do. Put up pictures of your entry or entries, as I know you do wonderful work and not just me, but other people would enjoy seeing it.

I will definitely post on my blog, and I could post a picture here too when all is said and done. I don't expect to win, but I think it'll be fun seeing something I've done out there on display for everyone to see.

i grew up in a small rural area which had (and still has) a fall fair, right around our Canadian Thanksgiving weekend. looking at all the competition pieces that have been entered used to be my favourite thing to do at the fair. i haven;t been there for a few years (we moved away when i was a teenager) but i do often think fondly of the times spent there.

I grew up in NH and there were three fairs that we went to every year in nearby counties. Loved the animals the most, and I doubt back then as a kid I bothered to look at any craft type things. I'm almost done the baby blanket that I think I'm going to enter this year.

I did calligraphy once.....and won a blue ribbon. A bunch of us at work did it together and it was so much fun....now I do stamping and several of my friend enter theirs into the fair competition...but I haven't done that for a while...good luck!

Oh wow, I'll bet your entry was awesome. I love to read calligraphy, but I've never attempted it myself. I doubt I'd be very good at it.

Good job. I prefer to keep what I make especially if I will never make one again. It's a masterpiece. I remember making a pouch out of coffee plastics and gave it to my friend. The friend's daughter wrapped it and gave it as a gift one Christmas.

I make a lot of things as gifts and also sell some of them, and donate to charity. When you make something to enter into the county fair, you get it back when the judging/fair is over. They don't keep it.

I used to have a link to your blog, I think I lost it. I am not really good at crocheting or knitting, but am improving and I would like to follow your blog.

I have entered some of cross stitch projects into our County Fair and each one has taken best of show. It is nice to be able to judge my work against some of the older ladies who enter year after year. Since being a guy it rough but seeing the judges do not know who entered what it is a fair judging of my works. Good luck this year with your entries.

Awesome! I used to do a lot of cross stitch, but finally sold all of my supplies on eBay a number of years ago when I was moving and had to downsize (and needed the money). I remember when my boys were small they wanted to learn, and my older son even tried to sketch out his own simple patterns. He was always drawing something, and went on to be an architect.

Ha! I've got you beat! I've lived in the Sacramento area for the past 27 years and have never been to the county fair! And when it comes to the state fair I've only been there and handful of times...the last time being back in '92, I believe. So there! LOL (Not that I'm proud of it, I just couldn't resist pointing it out ). As you can guess I've never entered anything there. Happy mylotting!

As I posted above, I haven't been to a state fair since about '95 or so, and that was in Minnesota. I need to get out more and might try to get up to Columbus for the state fair here this year. We'll see.
