The weather is suppose to go up to 45C today, and be very humid. Marco is in my room while Im at work. I have the ceiling fan on, and a stand fan on pointing at his cage. He has fresh water hooked onto his cage. I shut the light off so its cooler in the room, but he is curled up in his litter box panting because its so hot. I tried giving him some ice cubes to suck on. A friend suggested putting some ice cubes around him so the coldness.

At some of the petting zoos here I have seen them fill 2 liter pop bottles and freeze them to put in the cages with the rabbits. They float them in big water dishes or troughs as well. That way there is not the mess of wet bedding, but if the rabbits want to they can curl up against the frozen bottles. It seems to work real well for them.

That sounds like a great idea GG. I would have never thought of that.

i never knew that was a big problem with rabbits. maybe if the fans right on him its blowing hot air at him and taking his breath? yes, id do what garden gerty said. put some frozen bottled water around his cage. you have no air conditioning at all?

Nope, we dont have AC, and wont get one it costs way way too much to run it. I got a new fan system in my window which makes it cooler but not cool like an AC. My friend who has had rabbits for a number of years suggested the frozen water bottles as well.

Well, if you have central air in your home and there is a vent in your bedroom, the first suggestion that I would give to you would be to move his cage so that it is closer to the vent so that he will cool off when the air conditioner is running. Another thing that I would suggest would be to make him a pan of water that he would be able to take a dip in if that is something that he wanted to do. Other than that, I really can't offer you any more suggestions.

We have a rabbit and it gets very hot here in Florida. Since he does not want to come in the house, we have dogs, and he just freaks out. I am afraid he will have a heart attack. So he has an enclosed room off the garage. We run the ceiling fan at all times in the summer. He has a play yard, but if we find him lying down on the floor of his cage, then we know he is too hot. He has a small baby blanket that we wet down and he lies on it, plus we put ice cubes in his water, and wipe him down with wet cloths. This works well for us and he does fine. We do watch him very closely though in the summer months.

Bless his heart. Maybe your dad can wet a towel in cool water and wrap around him so he can cool off. He could stress out and die in this heat.
