Would you cancel your vacation because of bad weather?

This year the Danish summer is rainy and relatively cold. I read that the number of people who went camping this year is 70% lower than the number of people who usually go camping and the campsites have lost of a lot of money this year. Some people leave the campsites before their vacation is over. They have already paid for the entire period, but they don't want spend the rest of the time there, because of the weather.
If I was in that situation I would probably stay and get the best out of the situation. I might make some changes in my itinerary and add more indoor activities, but I would still spend time outside and explore the surroundings.
Would you cancel the rest of your vacation if it rained every day? Would you try to find indoor things to enjoy like museums? Would you buy a raincoat and an umbrella and continue the sightseeing that you had planned?

I would definitely cancel an outdoor activity with a bad weather. I would spend my vacation by watching a good movie, eat out with my wife would be a good alternative to the usual beach outing or any road trip. Safety first before anything else as they call it. I may plan again for another one, this time, I would check on the weather forecast and any advisory before buying an air ticket a week before the vacation maybe. Thanks

Hi mikyung, here we have a big mountain resort where there are lots of indoor activities and outlets are available. It's a great place for people to spend vacation there. It's the popular city of entertainment in our country. The kids still could enjoy the fun playing all sort of interesting activities that are usually available in open air. My hubby and I love spending our holidays there.
You are wise enough to check the weather forecast and advisory earlier before booking air ticket This at least could avoid the probability of encountering of severe bad weather

It is a good idea to check the weather forecast before you buy your ticket. That can save you from the unpleasant weather that you might experience if you just buy a ticket without checking the weather forecast. I should also have checked the weather forecast before I bought my ticket to the German island that I visited with my friends. It was raining all day and that was a little annoying since we originally wanted to explore the island on foot. The two days later it the sun was shining all day, and we really should have chosen that day instead, but it is too late now

If I was to go on my motorcycle, yes. If not maybe. Summer vacation means sun. But you can always have a good time if the company is right.

I agree with that. If the company is right we can have a good time despite the weather. I recently went on a daytrip with my friends. We planned that daytrip a long time ago and we made reservations a long time ago. When we planned the trip we didn't know that it was going to rain all day, but it did. We had a nice time anyway. We don't see eachother that often and we talked and laughed a lot. Of course it would be have been better if the weather had been sunny, but it didn't ruin our trip.

It is not a bad thing to go out of schedule. Me and my friends call it adventure and it's nice when it happens to have some obstacles along the way. It puts a smile in my face. It is like salt and pepper in your food. You like it when you taste it.

I have done it atleast a time ,if i remember correctly and that was only last month .The weather is a crucial factor which comes into play if you are travelling for long distance and i care so much for it.only it is good and shiny,i go ahead or make the cancellations on time.I dont want to suffer so much and stay inside going to a newer place on a bad weather.
That is what i normally do

I usually go through with my original plans, but there is no doubt that the trip is more enjoyable when the weather is sunny. When it is cold or rainy I bring an umbrella and I still try to spend some time outside just like I planned. I also try to add more indoor activities to my itinerary and make other adjustments if the weather is miserable.

If this happened before, when I was still working, and my traveling schedule is limited to certain times of the year, then i would have, out of no choice, pursue the traveling plans. And, like you mentioned, think of activities that I can enjoy even with the rain.
Well, as long as the raining doesn't turn to bad typhoons or worse, tsunamis.

Yes, rain definately isn't as bad as typhoons or tsunamis. I usually try to find some interesting indoor activities if it rains a lot during my vacation. It is usually possible to visit some museums or visit other places where you can stay inside. When I spend time outside I will bring an umbrella. If I already arranged my vacation and took time off from work I want to continue my vacation despite the bad weather. I can't change the weather, but I can choose a positive attitude

Hi friend, i am not interested in cancelling the vacation trip, as we arrange the vacation to get a refreshment, if we cancel our trip, we don't have the ability to get it. So i will enjoy the indoor activities and finish the vacation on the end day

I usually do the same thing. I try to add find some interesting indoor activities that I will be able to enjoy. If I visit a big city there are many options and there are usually some museums that I am able to visit or other activities that I can do inside. I don't want to cancel the vacation, because if I did that I would lose the chance to have a nice time with my husband and my friends and I prefer to stay and make the most of the vacation.

Me personally i would keep my vacation as planned. Im a pure country girl and im not afraid to get wet. I have went camping at the beach and it stormed EVERY night so a little rain don't frighten me. Now if they were talking about tsunamis or tornadoes best believe i will go back home.

Tsunamis or tornadoes would also make me change my plans, but if it rains I usually stick to my original plans and use an umbrella. I might make some adjustments in my itinerary and add more museums or others activities that I could do inside, but I don't think that I go home. I would probably stay and try to make the best of the situation. Last week I visited a German island with some friends and it rained all day, of course it would have been more fun to explore in the island in sunny weather, but we still had a nice time.

Hi Porcospino, here in my country we don't have the four seasons. More rain would be available in wet season twice in a year. It would be scorching during dry season. I'm glad that the small town where I live is the heaviest of rainfall. It would rain at anytime. There are many great sites around where people would spend their vacation. There is a hill at the edge of the town. It's a great place where people would like to spend their holiday camping or lodging in the cottages there.
We have to book the cottage or bungalow or capping site two months or so before and pay in advanced at the same time. They are limited and always occupied not only during peak season. This is because there are located in the hill area surrounded by natural greens. The air there is fresh and cool. I won't cancel my vacation even though it rains all the time. It's not easy to get accommodation there. Yeah, just like what you have mentioned, we can make changes in the itinerary and have more interesting indoor activities
I care more on the fun to get along with my sibling families or with my loved ones. It would be a great disappointed and monotonous if the vacation is cancelled. I won't feel easy if just sitting idling at home and let off the chance to be with my dear sibling family members

The hill area that you described sounds very beautiful. It must also be very popular since you have have to make reservations two months in advance. I understand why you don't want to cancel your vacation. For me it would also be a big disappointment to cancel my vacation and miss the chance to spend time with my family. I think it is much better to go on vacation anyway and make some adjustments in the itinerary if we have to spend more time indoor. My family and I went one vacation in the past where is rained all day and the weather was really cold. We spent much of the time inside the house wrapped up in big blankets because the heating didn't work, but we still had a nice time together.

I live in England and one day this week was a warm and sunny day but the other days have been windy and cold. It was raining a lot today as it has been doing so a great deal. I feel sorry for garden centers, ice cream van owners, gardeners, campsite owners and others badly affected by the wet and miserable weather.
I plan to buy waterproof trousers for me, my disabled son and my daughter. My daughter fell off her bike a week and a half ago. Wellington boots rub her cuts on her legs from that accident. She has to wear shoes and not go in the puddles. We had two children's umbrellas and each of us have a raincoat. We will be visiting Cornwall on Saturday for one week. We will take the rain gear and carry on with my planned sightseeing. We will do some indoor activities to like museums, art galleries, indoor swimming pools and indoor children's play centers.
It seems that England and Denmark are having a wet summer in 2012. What a pity.

I hope you are having a great time in Cornwall. Yes, the weather in Denmark has been miserable in June and most of July, but seems like it is getting better. Yesterday it didn't rain at all and today the weather is also sunny. I hope that the rest of July and August will be better than the first part of the summer. It would be so nice to be able spend some time outside and or visit the beach I am going to a fair and medieval festival in August and those things take place outside so sunny weather would be really nice.

I may cancel my holiday if i was camping in a tent i would probably cancel as if it was too wet i may not have a dry place to sleep.Though i would not go on holiday in a tent in the first place.I do have a caravan though which i go away in and if the weather was bad i would probably still go away as the things i do tend to be very indoor related such as going to museums and things like that. The only reason that i may not go away is if the weather warning was really severe and may get stranded by floods or something.

A vacation where we don't have a dry place to sleep that doesn't sound very tempting. If I was always cold and wet I might change my mind and decide to go back to my home earlier. I have slept in a tent before and we were very lucky because the weather was really nice and we didn't get wet at all. When I go on vacation I usually choose a mix of outdoor and indoor activities. I like to go for walks outside and visit open air museums, but I also like to visit art museums and other kinds of museums where I spend the time inside a building.

Porco, when i was still young and going vacation with my siblings, we usually don't cancel our vacation. It seems like the weather didn't cause any problem to our vacation. since now i have a little child to bring along, i think i would have to cancel or maybe change the vacation area. For example, if the vacation area does include indoor, i prefer to stay more in the indoor area rather than spending time in the outdoor area. I prefer to lose some money rather than getting the whole family to falls ill and have to pay the doctor a visit during the vacation time.

That is a good point. It would be sad to end your vacation at the doctor's clinic, and it is best to make some adjustments and try to avoid that situation. I also like to make some changes in my itinerary if the weather is cold and rainy and it is usually possible to add some some extra indoor activities like visits to museums. Sometimes if we travel by car it is also possible to do our sightseeing from the car instead of walking around in the cold weather. My friends and I did that some days ago when we visited Sylt in German. It rained all day so we stayed in the car most of the time.

This would have to depend on where my vacstion was. If i could still enjoy my vacation aside from the bade weather, i would see no need to cancel it. If the weather was playing a big part in my vacation plans, I might have to rethink them for a while.

That is a good point. I also think that it would depend on the place that I wanted to visit and the purpose of the vacation. If I was planning a beach vacation it wouldn't be very nice to spend the vacation in the rain. On the other hand if I was planning a vacation where I was going to spend most of the time inside (museums, shopping malls etc) the rain wouldn't be a big problem. If I have planned many outdoor actities I might change to plans and choose to spend more time inside, but I would probably grab an umbrella and spend time outside as well.

I have to say i do not have other choices, for i'll wait in the hostel and that's also another different way to experience how local people live. For i will check th e weather forcast in advance and to arrange the next day travel.Plus, going the the city museum is also a way to experience local culture.

A visit to the museum is a great way to experience the local culture. We can learn some new things that way and the big advantage about museums is the fact we are able to stay inside where it is warm or dry while it is raining outside. When I visit a new place where ourdoor activities don't seem tempting because of the bad weather I often change my itinerary and add more indoor activities like visits to the local museums. Sometimes it can also be fun to stay at the hostel, because we can meet the other travelers there and we can have a nice time together.

It depends on the type of activities we planned before hand. Of course whether they would refund some of the amount paid is another factor to be considered. If it is a sightseeing vacation, I would stil stick around if the weather is not too bad and that the venue is not dependent to the weather condition. Of course, some vacation spot would have sufficient indoor facilities to keep your stay entertaining too.
@Porcospino (31366)

Yes, some at some places there are many indoor facilities and at those places it would be quite easy to find alternative ways to spend the time when it is raining outside. I heard about one campsite in my country, they have a large indoor swimmingpool and because of that they didn't lose as many customers as the campsites that only have outdoor facilities. I think that is understandable, because it is not very tempting to spend time on outdoor activities if it is raining every day. If I go on a vacation and the weather is cold and rainy I would also look for indoor activities.

I think I would go and still have the vacation... well, I'd be thinking of cancelling it if I could get a refund and I'm going to somewhere where I would have been at the beach the entire time... like whe I go with my family... because if I could choose something myself, I'd hate just lying around on the beach. I do think sightseeing and walking in the streets can be done in bad weather. I'm not that fussy about this thing. I'm going to take my umbrella, some water-resistant boots, and go, not whine and complain about the weather... and rain has it's sentiment and romanticness, too. Also, when I go sightseeing, I usually visit museums and castles, too, so at least I can go somewhere dry as well :D.

I like your attitude about travelling I think it is true that walking in the streets can be done in rainy weather as well as long as we have an umbrella or a raincoat and some water-resistant boots. Two days ago when I visited the German island, Sylt with my friend I had forgotten an umbrella and that was a big mistake because it rained all day. We chose to explore the island from the car instead. Next time I will not go on a sightseeing trip without an umbrella

If it was tent camping and not an RV or cabin, I would be inclined to bail due to rainy and cool weather. It's just not that fun to stay in a tent during such weather. However, it would be fine if it were an RV or cabin--even a very rustic one.

Yes, an RV or a cabin would be much better than a tent in rainy weather. I would try to give the vacation a chance even if I stayed in a tent, but if I got too cold or wet, I might change my mind Fortunately my friends and I didn't experience much rain when we went camping in the past, but this summer the weather is cold and rainy and I understand why many people have chosen a different type of vacation this year.

I suppose it would depend on where I was going and where was I lodging. As it is, I go to places now where there are plenty of things to go if there is a heavy rain. And I donĀ“t mind stating in the hotel reading on a rainy day. I always take books and when I go out with friends I also place in my suitcase a couple of decks of cards.
@Porcospino (31366)

I also bring some books when I travel. That is a good way to spend a rainy day, but there are also other options like museums or a big shopping mall where I can look at the shops while it is raining outside. Sometimes I find a nice coffeeshop and drink coffee while I read my book and look at the rain outside. I don't think that I have cancelled a vacation becaue of bad weather, but I have sometimes chosen to change my itinerary and because I wanted to spend more time inside. If I visit a big city there are usually plenty of things to do inside like museums or similar places. Sometimes I simply grab an umbrella and explore the outdoor sights even when it is raining.

If I lived in North America or anywhere where it was snowing, I would definitely, no question, cancel my trip, especially by plane. We have seen hundreds of people killed in aircraft where too much snow on the wings brought the plane down. A vacation would not be something I would not cancel if it predicted bad weather. I would cancel.

Not necessarily. It depends where I 'm going. If for example if was going to the beach and I knew beforehand that it was going to be rainy maybe I would but otherwise I don't think so. There are many ways to enjoy your holidays regardless of the weather. Probable buy a raincoat and enjoy the sights regardless.

A beach holiday in rainy weather doesn't sound very tempting, but I think there are other kinds of holidays that you can enjoy even when it is raining outside. Like you I would probably buy a raincoat and go sightseeing anyway. If I travel from my home to another part of the country I want to explore that part of the country while I am there. Of course it is more fun to go sightseeing when the sun is shining, but we are not always that lucky. I might decide to change my itinerary a little and add more indoor activities, but I would explore the other sights, too (outside)
