Why Do You Think Doctors Smoke?

I have been asking myself this question for quite some time now.
If you go to our school, you would usually see nursing and medicine students as well as actual doctors enjoying a cigarette stick.
Of all people, they are the ones who know how bad cigarette smoking is to our health, so why do you think they still do it even though they are fully aware of its consequences?

take it from a nurse,me, med school and school of nursing is a stressful environment for us. Set for example, your introduced with a patient today , you interview and gather all necessary data and you collate all of these data to be submitted tomorrow, much worse at the end of the day, and Im not taking about ordinary data. These data includes health history, present and past illnesses, health history of the family of the patient, then you check the patient from head to toe, noting every single abnormalities, then you associate each signs and symptoms with what disease the patient may have. after identifying the disease or diseases and I am not talking one or two diseases! , we plan the course of treatment that may take for how many days or weeks, the course of treatment, well you can imagine it from medicines to examinations, diets, activities, the do's and dont's and such you patients may hear from doctor and nurse's... and when the day end, we are not only handling ONE patient, it is always more than THREE! much worst for Public health it will never go down to 30 patients...
and so, smoking, much less drinking and food indulgence is the only stress reliever for us :)

I think they do not enjoy electronic cigs since even though it's available they are still enjoying real smoke... btw, I am not a smoker, but I find eating a way to relieve stress :)

I think these are the ones who got into medicine just for the money. They didn't want to help anyone be healthier they just saw dollar signs. They don't even care about themselves. You are depriving your brain of oxygen when you smoke. Not a good asset for a doctor.
I had a doctor who would come in all tan smelling of smoke. She was a horrible condescending doctor who nearly killed me by not caring to do any tests or send me to a specialist and completely misdiagnosed me. Doesn't surprise me she also smoked and tanned and was fat on top of it.

Yep, that's exactly what I am saying. How can you believe they care about you or know whats best for you when they are hurting themselves? My husband had a doctor like this two years ago. He was going on a crash Atkins diet and wanted to be checked out. She was huge, I am talking close to 300 lbs he said easy, and short. Told him he should aim for way more of a weight loss than he was targeting.
He is six feet tall and started his diet at 210. In the same conversation she confessed she can not stay away from potato chips and knows how hard it is, ugh. I know not everyone can be sticks but it just makes you shake your head in disbelief.
I wish I could sue her but I thought about it and I know I can't prove what she did to me.

That was unbelievable! How can your husband find the motivation to lose weight when his doctor admits that she cannot stay away from potato chips! I cannot believe there are doctors that are like that!

Wow ForSouls1234. You completely brought a new outlook in this discussion. All the responses above talks about doctors relieving stress. You on the other hand say that these kinds of doctors are irresponsible to themselves and as well as their patients. Is that what you are saying?
I feel bad about what happened to you. I believe you can file a law suit against that doctor especially if she almost got you killed because of her being unprofessional.

Just because someone knows something is bad, doesn't keep them from doing it. I guess it's just a human thing. Think about it, seeing and dealing with sick people, some dying, some without insurance or ability to access health care. It could just be the reaction to stress. Either way, I am just glad to have only smoked a few years before realizing what I was doing to myself,

I extremely agree with what you stated ersmommy1. I guess we humans are indeed irrational thinkers. We always take into consideration the things we want instead of the things we need.

Well, they are regular people like us, so they might have started smoking before going to medicine school. Or it just takes the stress away, because medicine is a stressful school and profession! I am also a smoker and I also say to people that they shouldn't smoke but it's hard to quit. I've managed to quit for 3 years but now I am smoking again! We all know the consequences but it's not easy to quit smoking if you aren't fully determined.

A person can stop doing such practices like drinking or smoking by having a constant mind inside him. A person should not just move from his decision from time to time. He should be constant. This will make you to stay away from anything you need. Try to get a good constant mind. This will help you

Yes quitting a habit like this is easier said than done. It is hard for others to understand this because they have not yet experienced it.
Anyway, at least besweet you know you can quit. You have done it before and I know, perhaps, you can do it again.
My father was once a chain smoker. But one day, he just stopped smoking. Not gradually, mind you. He said he does not feel like smoking anymore. Fortunately, he did not feel any withdrawal syndrome.
So I guess there are people who can quit smoking overnight. But most people are not like my father. Most bring their habit til their very last day.

Well, I don't usually see doctors or nurse smoking. But I believe the reason they smoke is quite similar with the common smoker. It can be to look good in front of others, or to socialize with people that smoke, or to reduce their stress and problems. Of course, none of these reasons sounds right to me as the health risk smoking has would just beat them all. Doctor of all people should not smoke especially in front of others as people would misunderstood and misleaded.

Honestly, I do not get why others think that they look good when they smoke. No offense, but they actually irritate me, especially when they are in a public place.
We are all aware that secondhand smoke is more dangerous so it annoys me whenever a smoker puffs his smoke carelessly, not thinking of other people's condition.

yeah actually it is dependent what kind of smoke he smoking, some smoke less bad to our health, if he really use the original smoke that you mean really bad to our health and even the smoke can distrub our breathing, thats mean he really don't care to his patient, i think he working just get money, she even don't care her patient.

Doctors are human beings too and they can succumb to temptations like everyone else. Of course if one sees a doctor smoking one may be less inclined to consult him or her. So I think most doctors will have their puffs discreetly. However I think there are less and less 'smoking' doctors nowadays.

I guess you have a point there succeednow. The chances of us winning over temptation is relatively low in the first place.
It is interesting, don't you think? That we humans are indeed motivated by our self desires. We do want we want even if we know that it is bad for us.
Sometimes I don't think humans act rationally at all.
