Hello,MyLotters. About a week ago I woke up and noticed that my cat was missing. I looked for her and after awhile I decided to check if she fell from the window. The minute I saw her I went down and to my immense relief, all the damage she had taken was a broken leg and the vet told me to consider myself and her lucky because a fall from the 8th floor could cause a lot more damage.I've heard that for cats it's better to fall from the 8th floor than to fall from the 3rd because they have time to land of their feet. I've often seen her put herself into dangerous situations but she always has perfect ballance and I can't help but wonder how it happened. I'm happy to tell you that after going through surgery my cat is able to walk again and behaves normally. So,I wanted to ask you whether this has ever happened to you and how would you react if it did?I was also wondering, since the vet told me it happens a lot ,what do you think causes cats ,who are normally perfectly ballanced to fall or jump from dangerous heights?

I'm glad that your cat didn't suffer any serious injuries.I also heard the thing that it is better for a cat to fall from the 8th floor than the 3rd.Apparently as well as giving them time to land on their feet they can use this extra time to slow themselves down by spreading out.I have been lucky as none of my cats have ever had a big fall but i have only ever lived in a house that was two storeys tall and my cats only allowed downstairs so she dosent get the oppurtunity to fall out of any high windows.

Really? I didn't know about the spreading out part but it makes sense. In my familys villa I've seen cats who jump from the second floor but don't suffer any injuries except maybe some sore paws. Nevertheless I feel you are making a good decision y not letting your cats get high, just to be on the safe side.

I think, even though cats have great balance, they can sometimes misjudge distance or the area they are walking on. I had a Siamese who was a great tree climber, his problem was he wasn't great at climbing back down. He would get to the area of the tree he wanted to be in, and then to get down he would simply let go! I watched this happen several times, and decided to keep him in the house! I didn't handle watching him fall and bounce off branches very well. He would land with a thump on a branch and then simply let go and fall to the next branch landing with another thump. The branches were all the way to the ground and he would bounce and thump his way to the ground! Of course I will admit that he wasn't quite bright either...
Another reason for cats to fall from high spots is that they may have a visual impairment. Cats can have sight problems just like humans, and that will play a huge part in their ability to judge distance and depth. I have a depth perception problem, and I have to be extremely careful when I climb a ladder or do anything where I don't have both feet on the ground...with no visual idea of the depth of anything, everything looks flat. It makes it easy for me to fall from a high spot. I learned that cross eyed Siamese have a huge problem with their eyesight. With that problem I have seen my Siamese fall off counters, tables, bookshelves, and even trip when they are going into the bathtub. Fortunately they are indoors cats and aren't allowed outside, otherwise I would have the problem you had. I do have a screened in patio for the cats so that they can feel like they're outside without the danger of their being outside.
I hope you're going to keep your baby inside the apartment and not let her cruise the ledge outside the window.

I've never hard of a cat that thums down from a tree like that but it sounds kinda dangerous but you can't really stop him once he's on the tree I guess...I've never noticed my cat having problems with her vision but maybe this is the reason...or maybe she got scared by a loud noise or something similar..I'll never know.I normally don't keep my cats from going to the balcony because it's coverd in glass and we keep it closed and my window has a net but I guess she somehow opened it...I'll definitely take some protective measures after this because I have no idea what I would have done if something worse had happened...

One of my cats jumped out the window of our second-story apartment. He must have gotten confused since the windows to the west side are directly above the stairs and he would usually jump out from there and fall on the stairs just a two or three feet below. One day the dog chased him and he jumped out the window to the south, which is directly over the apartment building's parking lot. He came back home unscratched, thank goodness. My partner and I sometimes joke that he (the cat) lost one of his nine lives from the fall.

You know we make the exact same joke about my cat.I'm glad your cat got out of it without getting hurt. When I was little we had a cat the roamed the entire building,we lived on the second floor as well and we had a couple of similar cases. It was very troublesome because she was also deaf so when she jumped and walked around the entire neighborhood we could never find her or call for her,we just had to wait.

hi shadowsky I once saw a video of cats who fell from heights and landed perfectly on all paws bu t the narrator said some cats get inner ear trouble that throws off the balance and they often get a paw or leg injured. She might have not been feeling so well and lost her balance and did not land on all four paws.
it has never happened to a cat of mine bu t lost my balance ,hit thfloor face down on tiled floor, spent 20 days in a rehab hospitak,

I learned yesterday that there had been a party neraby eith fireworks that night and I think she might have gotten scared by that but maybe it was some other health reason like you suggested.I once saw a vide of cat jumping from a very high place and getting up and running away without a scratch. I guess it's all about the way they fall or to be more precise the way they land.

My cats are all indoor cats but they still sometimes take risks--we have a landing on the second floor that overlooks the staircase and the railing is wide enough for a cat to stick its head/body through the slats. And the three young ones do, all the time--and peer down over the stairs. Sometimes they decide to walk through the railing snaking their bodies in and out of each slat. It makes us VERY nervous! None have fallen yet, but it is only a matter of time. . .And whenever we try to put up something in front of the railing to keep them away from it, they just become more interested and push and poke at it until they move the barricade out of the way, which makes it more dangerous! I am hoping that they all outgrow it like our older cat has. We shall see. Glad your cat is ok!

I understand your concern and the worst thing about your situation is that you can't stop them from doing these things. The only theing I can say to make you feel better is that it takes something extraordianary to make a cat lose it's balance and I've had at least three cats throughout my life that have never fallen so it's actually a pretty rare event.

dear
wow your cat was lucky! my cousins cat in their 43rd floor apartment fell off and passed away. What a site to be seen by the people of the floors below! Their cat fell off because he liked to be on the very edge of the balony , where the flower pots are.

I'm sorry for your cousin's cat :( .My other cat likes to stand on the very edge of the window ,her back paws on the edge and her front paws practically outside. I always try to take her off the edge but I'm also careful not to scare her because a shock might cause her to fall...I guess all cats like to put themselves in danger...
