Barcodes On Grave Stones!?! Wow!

I was watching the news last night and they were talking about this new thing that people are doing. There is a guy that develops a website based on a person and their life. There are audio options where a person can leave messages, a place for pictures, and an overview of their history. It is connected to a barcode that can be scanned by a smartphone and placed on gravestones! Can you imagine what this will do for the person interested in genealogy? The lady that had done it for her husband said that it cost around $400 to have it done and this included the maintaining of the website. She loved it so much, she thought she would do it for her father too. Would you consider something like that? With technology advancing, did you ever think that the cellphone would link us to the past? Would you consider such an option?

Wow, that is pretty cool. My mum would love that sort of thing as she has spent many hours in cemeteries studying genealogy. She has gone back to the 1600's in many lines of ancestry in our family and then taken different paths forward to see who we are distantly related to! Prince Charles, Madonna, Celine Dion are some of the ones she found going forward! I can definitely see this type of thing becoming very popular.

Wow..she is quite the genealogist. It is amazing where we can find our roots and branches..lol. I have been wanting to do a little searching of my own. Something like this barcode thing would be really neat to run across if I were searching. Thanks for the response.

dear i think thats a wonderful idea. Even the things that have been there forever are changing.Everything is changing in this world making everything high tech. I think that some things should be kept simple but things like this can be helpful.I just don't want the world to be complety high tech for example robots raising our kids or something like that ...

Things are continuously becoming more high tech. I agree that some things are better left simple...in a way the simple things are sometimes the most complex. Imagine a world with children raised by emotionless robots. I bet that wouldn't be very pretty. Thanks for the response.

No, I do not think I would consider it, but then I do not even have a smartphone. I was at an outdoor art exhibit that had bar codes to scan for information about the pieces. I have the genealogy my dad has compiled and that is about as much as I can handle.

I don't have one either. I wish I had a bunch of stuff about my family. I would love to know more about them. Maybe it would be something good for some like me. I would have to invest in a smartphone first though and I am just too tight with the finances to do that anytime soon..lol. Thanks for the response.

I've heard of these "QR Codes" that are those square box type barcodes that are cropping up that give more info than a regular one,and have seen adverts for greetings cards that feature a code that when viewed with a smartphone can bring you to a personalised message, making the card interactive..I suppose it must be something like this idea..Maybe the Deceased can prank visitors that call by..I bet Spike Milligan would have had some fun with the idea..apparently he had "I TOLD You I was Ill!" engraved on his gravestone..

I suppose you could leave any message you wanted for the listener to hear It is kind of like that except for the website it takes you to can have an entire history of the life and times as well as the audio tab at the top. I thought it was a very interesting idea. Thanks for responding.

Wow! I love the idea! It now means that you can be remembered forever or until as long as possible. I was always afraid that I'd die being remembered and known only by the few but now with this technology, I can stop worrying. Seriously, though, I really think this is going to be another breakthrough and I believe a lot of people now, after hearing this will be considering this as well, and maybe have other brilliant ideas as well. I just hope that it would cost lesser though and that it would be available here by the time I'm gone.

I believe they should patent this idea immediately otherwise big corporations might end up owning this and charging more for it. I'd hate it if this one goes to already rich companies.

I checked out the website and it said that their shipping for these are worldwide. Perhaps they are available for you. I do realize that not all cultures participate in the burial ritual but I was thinking that families might consider a wall of sorts to place their barcodes...maybe with the names under or above them. I can see it being very popular. I did post a couple of articles through out this discussion about them and there is concern about the maintaining of the website in the future. I do think there will be some competition if it takes off though. Thanks for responding!

If I have understood it correctly it is not a one time effort but an on going activity? Who would feed the site with information? And what if those who maintain the site cease to maintain it? Please do elaborate on this JenIn. It is 6 in the morning here and I always thought my brain functioned at its best at this hour but I wonder now!

There are a lot of things to consider. I read and noticed those things too. It is in the beginning stages, I suppose, and at this point it is hard to tell how it will either grow or not. What will happen. I bet that if it does take off, there will be plenty of competition though. That might open up a few more longer lasting doors...I don't know. Somebody else also mentioned the potential for hackers and how that could have an effect on things.

I still feel enthusiasm will die down as what used to be in the good old days when people depended on people and therefore got so involved with each other that is not the case nowadays. I don't think it has the same impact now with so many distractions. Just a thought.

Honestly? No. I'd be afraid any Tom, D!ck, and Harry could look at information that I may not want anyone to know. If the person were to be famous that I was to be in charge of burial arrangements for? I'd ask them first. I just... No I'd rather have any kind of memory of a person, including myself, written down.

I believe it has to do with QR code... You can have it linked to just about anything... I've seen it on business cards, shirts people wear, laptops, etc etc... I've seen one business card that has nothing on it but a QR code on it... When you scan it with a smart phone, it brings up the company that person works for & all the information, such as the name of the person & contact info & the position he/she is in... Then there's one that you can put on your shirt so when someone scans it, their Facebook page comes up... Some of the insurance company is getting in on it... They have a small QR code on people's linsense plate & if they scan it, their insurance info pops up... Of course there's a security measure built into it so they can't just scan it willy nelly... Car dealerships use it on their car displays so when a customer scans it, it'll bring up all the specs of that particular car... With all these features going on, it doesn't surprise me they are starting to put them people's grave stones...

I freak out thinking about being buried but if I was going to be I would certainly entertain such an option. What an interesting thing! I foresee this being a thing of the future in libraries and museums instead of people doing tours. Maybe they are doing this already since i don't get around much. Technology is certainly advancing. I am so curious about the future I don't want to die. I want to see what happens to this world and my grandkids ofcourse. Never thought the cellphone would link us to the past. Although I saw on TCM where you can buy an app that takes you on a tour of old Hollywood haunts. I want it!

That would be neat to have. I am not crazy about the idea of passing either. I don't have enough time to do everything that I want to do. I thought that it was a pretty neat concept too. Thanks for responding!

I think this is a great idea! There was a discussion here about making a facebook page for the recently deceased, where people can leave messages and photos for others to see. Maybe that barcode could have a link to this facebook page (if it doesn't link to it directly already). I would definitely consider it. I moved my family half way around the world. And maybe when my great, great, great grandchildren would wonder about any difference between their nationality and citizenship, then maybe they could scan my barcode and read and learn about the move I made.

Wow! this is an incredibly sharp and up to date idea! I am actually really impressed and hope this guy makes a mint from this original idea. wish i had thought of it! The first thing i did when i read this discussion was imagine a gravestone with a large barcode on it and it made me smile as it looked pretty cool in my head I will probably get cremated so i would like the barcode for myself made out of my ashes, just to add that personal touch!

Not at all. I don't even want a gravestone as I am not going to be buried. I don't want my stone cluttering up our Earth. I simply won't be part of it. I really hope this trend won't continue. They are going to have to do something about cemeteries and gravestones in the future. It's just something that has to happen. We are going to run out of land. And I personally HATE looking at them. I see a cemetery I look the other way. They are an antiquated idea that needs to go.

Thanks for the input. There are a lot of people that feel that way about graveyards. There are also people where they don't even fit in their culture. Maybe they could come up with a memorial wall with names underneath the barcodes. That might be an idea too. I suppose there could be several options.

I am an epitaph man myself! Two of my favorites are, " I told you I was sick," and last but not least- " Here lies Les Moore, Four shots from a 44, No Les, no Moore."

Hmm well I think that it is a really interesting idea for many years from now for people to be able to scan a barcode on a grave and get so much information about the person which might be hard to find usually. I wonder how they would preserve the barcodes for hundreds of years though without them getting worn out. If you pay $400 for a barcode to be put on a grave you obviously want it to last for many years.

They are actually embedded in the stone and they look pretty hardy. I am posting a link. I should have done that in my discussion, but I forgot. Here is one that shows a picture. http://newsplethora.org/barcodes-on-tombstones/2423/ Not a referral link

I thought it was a pretty neat idea too. I posted a couple of links above and they were talking about the expense being $65. I think that is just for the barcode itself though. The maintenance fees and installation may be where the additional money they mentioned on the news ($400) may come in. Thanks for responding!

It does sound pretty interesting. With technology always advancing there is nothing that really surprises me anymore. There are times where I have crossed a tombstone at a cemetery and wondered more information about the individual. It really does stand the test of time if you want to look at the information many years from now.

wow, this is something i cant see catching on. graves are meant to be there forever, and i think eventually this technology will become irrelevant like all technologies. then yoiu just have this ugly engraving on the side of your great great grandmas grave. i really value paper records, and think people should do this too. but for the moment it seems ok, i am not in the position to choose anything like this or have any say in family members graves at all. i think if we had this too, we could compile all of the graves online and anyone can go find and visit them.

Your right..it would allow anyone access to a family history. Some people don't mind but then there are those that value a bit of privacy where this is concerned. I like books and paper records too. I think this will be a nice supplement to some historical records but the real question is..like you said...how long will it last? Thanks for the input!
