Charlie Chaplain

Charlie Chaplain was quite a man. Do you know he was Jewish? He wanted to join a country club until he found out they did not allow Jews, but they would make an exception for him because of his fame. He flatly refused to have anything to do with them. Anyhow he was noted for his comedy. He is one of his lines that I think is very cleaver. "I am thinking of joining a club and beating you over the head with it" What are your thoughts?

I know so little about Charlie Chaplain other than he was a great comedian. I,not too long ago, did a discussion which caused me to look up a bit about him. I posted a Pearl Jam video in which a clip from the movie "The Kid" was used. Someone argued with me that the kids was not Jackie Coogan who also played Uncle Fester on the Adam's Family. This prompted me to look it up and I did get reading some other things on him. I did not know he was Jewish. I read that he was kept from entering the US for political reasons for years but then got invited here to recieve a special award??

wow I just read his bio, he was barred from some us states because of his affairs with so many women. He went on a trip back to England and couldn't return, so he left the USA for good and then returned only for his oscar. This man was making 650,000 a year in 1915 amazing.

That's a lot of money he made in those days, and as most of his early films were silent, he made this money without saying a word.

Yes, He's a very interesting character for sure. And that's what I so love about Mylot. Like above, I mentioned that this person argued with me and told me that it was not Jackie Coogan in the film. Had she not disagreed with me, I'd not have gone searching for links to show her that it in fact was him. In doing so, I got caught up reading about Charlie Chaplain. I would never have known all that otherwise. I looked up the video of him recieving his Oscar. He had gone all those years feeling that the US did not like him and was proven the opposite. He was in tears.

If he said that line in English , he meant some things : He could just go and join another club instead of that country club that didn't accept Jews. He was so famous so that club could earn a lot of fame and respect for having Charlie Chaplain in it. The first club would lose Charlie Chaplain and learn a hard lesson like being hit on the head with a metaphorical club (as a blunt weapon). So , that line is clever using the two meanings of the word club , and combining a metaphor. I think a writer like you , Winterose , can really find that line useful.

Of course not , but you can make other lines like that , using metaphor and words with some meanings. The club had two meanings and one of them was used as a metaphor. You can do it too : take for example the word "light" , it can mean low weight and it can mean the energy that comes out of the sun , lamps ... You can make a sentence like this : "Some people are depressed from being over weight ,so , lightening their weight will light up their mood." (It means that if they lose weight , they will be happier.) I just made it up. I used a metaphor with the light and the two meanings of it. What do you think ? Would you make some lines like this too ? I like writings that involve word games with meanings and metaphors.

I am a professional writer, I do metaphors when it is appropriate for the writing that I am doing at the moment.

I agree with Charlie. THose clubs are such a bunch of snubbers. I wouldn't have any fun at one even if they would have me. I find jews to be very interesting people. They have some interesting beliefs. I like the saying very much. I would definitely join him too! As my grandmother used to say: "People are no dam.ned good!" I tend to agree with her. People being 'them' not 'us'.

That is true. I am surprised by some I hear on tv shows and such. Sad that they still feel they need to hide out. SOme anyway.

I'm not sure what he means by that. I wonder if he said that because of that club that wouldn't let Jews in, but they would have let him in. Using an organization as a weapon? Do you know what it means?

I don't really know the context of that line, but it would make sense in terms of him being excluded from the club because he was a Jew.
