Ladies....if you are married did you wear the traditional long white dress and veil? What happened to that dress afterwards. I wonder if anybody had it shortened and wore if as a workaday dress or perhaps just hangs forever in the wardrobe or closet.

I haven't gotten married yet. However, I have been thinking about this issue recently. I think that I will end up leaving it hanging until one of my (future) daughters wed. I don't think that I could alter my dress and wear it on a daily basis--not my wedding dress. It wouldn't bother me to alter a bridesmaid dress (most of them beg to be altered!), but I don't think that I could bring myself to permanently alter something that was such a big part of one of the most important days of my life.
I am thinking of a retro or vintage wedding dress. There will definitely be a veil; I know that they have fallen out of favor, but I intend to have one. Part of that is due to religious tradition; part of it is due to the fact that I am keeping to a bit of a retro feel for the entire wedding.

I am old enough to remember when retro was the present! I like the idea of keeping your dress for your future daughters' use. I just hope that when it is time that they love it as much as you. Assuming of course that you have daughters and not sons! Not such a good image. LOL.

I plan to adopt, so there should be at least a daughter or two.

My wife bought a second hand dress. you would never have known it had been worn before though, it was perfect. Not too traditional but it was white which was surprising as she initially was never going to go for white. When she was done with it, it sat in the cupboard for a couple of years before she eventually gave it away on Freecycle to an eager young bride who could not believe her luck!

Nope! I had a nice red dress custom made. I designed the dress myself, and had a friend make it for me. No veil, just a tiara. My sister had the long white dress and veil, and the thing is still in a box in my mother's closet. Nobody has any idea what to do with it. LOL

My dress was a cream color, and I wore a crocheted wool hat instead of a veil. Still have the hat and matching shawl somewhere. Wore them a lot. As for the dress, I changed the sleeves, embroidered some flowers around the neckline and wore it a couple more times in a formal setting.

Actually, I bought the material (peau de soie) and had my older sister make it for me. She was in the business of making wedding attire.

I bought mine at a thrift store and it was a prom formal or something. I couldn't see paying hundreds for something I'd wear just once. It hung in the closet till he filed for divorce and before I moved I donated it to the same store I bought it from. Hope it brings someone luck!

If you're looking to borrow one, you're out of luck with mine. I happily found one that was on the clearance rack, and donated it to a thrift store after my wedding. The cost of storing it was higher than the reduced price that I'd paid for it, so it made no sense to go that route.

The dress was white but not long. It's at the bottom of the wardrobe, which is where I keep trying to put Mr Croc but he keeps escaping. Married nearly 39 years and he's still not properly trained.

Unfortunately my wedding dress was destroyed by my kittens, who managed to get locked in a room with it whilst I was on honeymoon and nested in it. Ooops!
Sad, but at least it saved me worrying about what to do with it! It had been my mother in law's dress, and had had some serious tweaking second time around. I'm not sure there would have been left had it been tweaked a third time.

I never met my MIL. I didn't find out about the dress myself until some months later. When my Mum, who was keeping an eye on my house whilst I was away, discovered what had happened she spirited it away to avoid a nasty surprise on my return. I assumed it was at her house until I asked one day ...

Well, I only wore it once and it wasn't white. Mine was ivory satin with an ivory lace cape. It is now sitting on my antique platform rocker in my room with an air conditioner sitting on top of it. Obviously, it's not as near and dear to me as it might be. But, I never wore it again - yet, I loved how it looked. I never wanted a traditional wedding gown.

I was married in a traiditional church ceremony complete with long white wedding dress and veil. I still have that dress tucked away in my closet. I am hoping to pass it on to my daughter one day. If she chooses something else wshen one day she marries, I will still keeo my dress, it has too many wonderful mmemories attached to it.

My wife wedding dress is properly kept at home now. Same with the dress I used too. She wore the traditional white dress with veil. They said that havng veil and white dress means purity.

Hi,
I am not married, nor do i plan on it but thats another discussion, but most ladies i know now havent worn veils. there are many more outdoor weddings and it seem the veil has fallen out of style for weddings. none of my family members have their wedding dresses stashed away, thought they wouldnt ever cut it up. i think a wedding dress is too special to use for parts to wear to work. it may even be bad luck, i wonder if any culture believes this. it is prectical to want to use it but instead of it collecting dust but it would be better to donate the dress.

My sister did wear the traditional white gown. It was so extravagant that she never wore it again. I think it is a waste because it is so beautiful. She has not shortened it though. It is still sitting on her closet.

When my Sister-In-Law got married for the second time, they honeymooned at a music festival, so she wore her first wedding dress (which got very mucky) to that, she got a lot of attention. :)

The first time I got married I wore the long white dress and veil, but I was fortunate to find a place that RENTS bridal wear. My bridesmaids weren't much for wearing dresses so being able to rent the dresses for them was great too. It cost me $400 to rent my dress and $80 each for the girls to rent theirs. Good thing too because that marriage didn't last.
The second time I got married I wore a knee length sleeveless champaign coloured dress with matching tuxedo jacket. It's a really smart outfit and was so fortunate to find shoes to match (though they were a little small). I have worn that dress a couple of times since marrying. I love that dress.

Hi pIke,
your discussion is only for ladies. Yet I'm participating. I think most of the ladies preserve their wedding dress as sweet memory.

hi dear p1ke I never dreamed of thsi long white dress with veil when I thought of getting married. I wanted a royal blue velvet dress and as I am overweight I spent the money and had it tailor made exclusively for me.
It is a two piece dress and has a bit of lace as well so I found it pretty. I got some rude remarks about that choice but I didnt really care because its my wedding and I choose what I want.
Its still there for formal use, so far didnt need it in the 7 years since but if I do its here.

I did, but I didn't buy it because I know I have nowhere to store it in, and nor do I plan to wear it again, anywhere. I had a good deal of having the wedding dress made for me, but as the first renter. It was my design choice, my sizes and after I used it for my wedding, I just have to return it to the shop and they'd have it out for other to rent, too. I don't think its practical to buy a wedding dress, even for keepsake. I could always just look at the pictures to see how the dress looks and how I looked in it.
