Solo update

Well, J took Solo to her vet. They have ruled out body and neck cancers, but we still have the fact that his head is congested and cats just WON'T breath through their mouths. We nebulized him and then gave him his amox/iron treatment tonight. J says her vet wants to "sleep" on it. This isn't saying he doesn't have something going on in his sinuses, he certainly can't breath easily. So, as of July 19th, we still are in a "wait and see" pattern. Please keep my dear Solo in your thoughts and prayers.

hi Elic Bxn I really feel for poor Solo as I have allergies at night that really upset my breathing and sleep. at least I can breathe through my mouth if necessary. I will keep Solo in my prayers that the vet can cure his allergy and let poor Solo sleep well 'again too.I will think of him when I have problems sleeping and breathing too.

We aren't sure if it is an allergy or what - did you know that Maggie's doc says that Benedryl can inhibit the oxygen uptake in the blood? He's told her to not use it - tho she was mostly using it for the other allergy problems she has... (I use it as a sleep helper)

Hatley, I hope you use the generic Benedryl as it is dollars cheaper than the name brand and it's the exact same stuff. You'll see it listed as "diphenhydramine". Walmart charges $4 or less for 100 capsules or tablets and you can't even get 25 tabs or caps of the name brand for that! Claritin works better for me, I buy the generic. Although I keep generic benedryl around for the dogs but thanks to Elic I won't anymore!

It is so hard to diagnose anything when the patient cannot talk to you about his symptoms. So, how is the nebulizing doing. Does it improve the situation at all?

He doesn't seem to be quite as distressed after the treatment - but I've just put food down for him - so I'll check on it later and see if he's eaten any.

Thanks, he's a special cat, not a particularly loving cat, but he's special because he's been here his whole life.

I'm afraid I'm working my pre-ulcer again, I've been kind of fighting with it for several months now - it had gotten so it wasn't hurting all the time, but I suspect its going to start again.

Oh, the poor kitty! I certainly hope, for everyone's sake, that he makes a full recovery. I know how anxious you can get while waiting to find out what is wrong when it is not immediately apparent. I went through that with my Bean but, as you know, the outcome wasn't good. I hope Solo's fate is much better. I will keep him in my thoughts and try to send positive energy his way (and yours!). Please keep us updated.

you're not using a "ion" air cleaner in your house anywhere by chance, are you? i knew someone whose cat's lungs filled with fluid due to one of those. they got rid of it,and he recovered.

Solo will be in my thoughts Elic and so will you. I know how hard this is for you. Hopefully the vet will do some researching and come up with a new answer. Maybe there is a new product or solution that he's checking on. I know everyone is hoping for the best outcome. Take care.

I'm so sorry! I hope you get some kind of decision today. Poor Solo has been through so much, I remember when he had his teeth pulled. I wonder if it's swelling in the sinuses instead of congestion for some reason, maybe some allergy or he was bit by a spider? I hope you get good news today!

About the benedryl - Maggie has COPD and already impaired oxygen uptake - probably won't hurt your dogs unless they have breathing problems rather than just allergy problems.

So what is the vet sleeping on I wonder. Maybe surgery? I hope Solo get better soon. I just hate the waiting part.

they don't really want to knock him out in his condition, he may not wake up... apparently the vet didn't have any ideas, so we are going to continue to treat him for now

I hope they figure out what is wrong and it's nothing serious. At least they have ruled out cancer in a couple of areas. He can't talk and tell you what is wrong, which makes it much harder! Did the treatment seem to help?

We nebulized him and gave him fluids and then gave him is meds - he was pretty unhappy with us, but he drank the milk we left and wanted to eat this morning.

I am praying very hard for Solo and for you. He needs you to be strong for him now more than ever. I had a cat once who was very sick with a fever and wouldn't eat. The vet gave her a shot of Valium and then a dish of baby food and she ate it all like there was no tomorrow. She was wobbly from the Valium and eating at the same time. After that she was okay. The vet said Valium will make them eat. You both are in my thoughts and prayers.

Yay! That sounds good! I used to have a cat that loved kitten milk. I bought it for him all the time. I think its very good for Solo, nutrition wise. I feel so good that he's drinking and ate some. I hope the change gave you a little relief. Maybe he's starting to feel a little better. Still praying. Thanks for the update. I know everyone here is very concerned.

I hope they can figure out what's wrong with him soon. I didn't realize they can't breathe thru their mouths if they had to. I guess I'm blessed thus far with pretty healthy kitties.

They can, but they don't like to, I've played with a young cat to the point where she was panting, so they will do it, but mostly they don't.
