Don't Waste the Lemon Peel!!

One of my business friends wrote about the incredible benefits that he says the researchers have found in lemon peel. According to him, they have found that it has 5 to 10 times as much vitamins than the lemon juice. Also according to this letter, it is extremely efficient against cancer cells, far more than chemotherapy. And as we know, it has no side effects. So why don't we know about this effect?? It can be due to the fact that nobody can make a big profit from this natural product that is available in all stores. Now, my friends, this is quite some news, and as we know, there is no harm in testing the effect of the lemon peels, as they can be added in almost any food. One way to use the whole lemon is to freeze it and grate some on your food whenever you want a great taste, and add this wonderful fruit to your favorite dishes. If I use the whole lemon, I would choose an organic one. Has any of you heard or read about the health benefits of the lemon peel??

Yeah, there are so many recipes, and if we can invent more and use the raw lemon and orange peel, maybe with honey, we will benefit even more. I like to eat dried organic fruits and they taste better than any candy, so using the citrus peels would be a good way to teach children to leave the sugar candies alone..

You are right that the lemon peel has many benefits and we shall not waste it. I like to slice the lemon peel and then dip it into the honey. After that, it is stored in a container in the refrigerator. If you are thirsty, you can get some honey with lemon peel and then put some cold water inside. Stir it and it tastes very well. I love China

research is new, you know about it because you are talking about it. As more and more research is being done more and more people will know about it and then doctors will talk about it and nutritionists and so on. Dr.Oz has already talked about it. The info is out there.

It seems the research has been going on at least since the 70s, but maybe some doctors who really want to help, tell about it more and more. I found Dr Oz - have to read more about him. Thanks for the suggestion. Here is a link about the lemon peel http://2013rainbowroundtable.ning.com/group/health/forum/topics/lemon-kills-cancer-cells

Dr. Oz is the best medical show on tv, you learn so much about foods and what foods are good to cure what and you learn about medical conditions and more.

I think that all peels have more vitamins than the inner fruit. Why? Because it has to protect and preserve the inner fruit. I would guess, it is the same with banana peel. However, should we consume banana peels, lemon peels, watermelon peels? My personal opinion would be no. We should eat the inner fruit! I love tangerines and oranges but I will throw the peel out. It might be good to compost, if possible. Logic and nature should teach us something. Why does an orange have a peel that tastes horrible, while the inner fruit is simply delicious? I don't think it was meant to be eaten.

Well, this makes sense - I can not imagine chewing the whole peels of lemon or other fruits, even if I have tried to eat very thin slices of oranges with the peel on. Not bad taste at all.. Maybe they were just meant for using as a zest..?? I wonder how we were meant to eat lemons. I would definitely not eat it like I eat an orange.. Thanks for the interestin thoughts!

Yes, and let's see if someone who has experience turns up and can tell if this info I read about cancer is true or not.

One day we will know much more about nature than we do today. We will just have to be patient and wait.

Yes I have heard of these health benefits before and have juiced whole lemons. Grating the zest using a zest grater into dishes is also great and adds a real kick. I agree, definitely do not use lemon peels, skins, zest unless the lemons are organic or at the very least pesticide and herbicide free. You definitely do not want to be eating the chemicals that conventional citrus farmers spray on to their fruit.

Yeah, it can be a challenge to find organic citrus fruits, here it is possible to do so during winter time. It would be possible to pick them from the trees in southern Spain or Italy but not in Sweden. I guess you have a lot of fresh fruit to eat in your place..

We do have a great range of fruits available here in Australia, especially where I am where most tropical fruits grow well and also the cooler climate fruits like citrus and apples grow well in the surrounding mountains at slightly higher elevation. So at our local organic markets we can find all sorts of great produce, but also the regular food markets also have some organic stall holders too. The only fruits that do not do well here at the stone fruits which have to be transported in from the colder climates further south.

Good - you can use lemonpeel everywhere - almost - and if you want to be even healthier, you can leave the sugar and use a little honey. It gives a great taste to salads and grated directly to the food just before eating.

My sister in law sent me an email about the benefits of lemon juice and how it is bad for cancer cells. I figured it's harmless so I've been drinking a tablespoon in water each day since then. It certainly can't hurt! We don't know about stuff like this because pharmaceutical companies wouldn't make any money. If it is true and was ever proven to fight cancer you'd find it hard to obtain. Why do you think, after billions upon billions of dollars have been spent on cancer research, that there is no cure for cancer? I'm sure there is but they haven't made enough money yet to "discover" it and probably never will.

The solutions to our health problems are too simple.. Most of this world is greedy and they don't care if people suffer or die, if only they win big money.. We need a better world, and only God will make it happen - Rev 21, Psalm 37.. Just continue with the lemon, and if you find organic ones, why not use the peel in your food..??

hi buenavida I would have th0ught the lemon itself would be more valuable nutrition wise but the zest gives a nice flavor to foods. but how does one digest this peel as its tough and hard to chew or eat.such incredible crap is p ut on the net and a lot of it is pure unadulterated hooey.I know that white pith does not help anything.I need to research these big claims before believing.

Well, Hatley, if you find some more info about the lemon zest, please let us know. I want to know more too, that is the reason I started this discussion. I agree with you that we cannot know if everything we read on the net is correct information. I was hoping that anyone who has some experience from using the lemon and the peel on a regular basis, would relate their experience. Let's see if someone turns up.. I would choose the yellow part of the lemon peel and grate it on salads and other foods. That way we don't need to chew it..And the a few drops of the juice in water or over food tastes great

I haven't done that tip about lemon before. I do like tasting the juice from the lemon after having squeezed it. Even my 3-year-old niece loves it too. But I use lemon the most as a facial and exfoliant. Never fails to dry up my pimples quickly.

That is a good idea to use it for the skin.. As you can see in the discussion above, there is a lot of goodies in all fruits and vegetables. If I get organic lemons, I love to put slices in water and drink the water. It tastes great after some time. And I fill more water, and the lemon slices still give a lot of taste.

Before the lemon slice is added in my water to gve a better taste. I included the peel. Not only that, they said that it will not just added taste to the water but it has a good benefits also. As much as I want to continue it, lemons here in our country is quite expensive.

If you know anyone who has lemon trees, you might from them directly. Even a small amount of grated raw lemon might give good extra vitamins to any food. They can be stored in the refrigerator rather long time! I wonder if oranges have the same effect, but better try to find organic fruit if you can and want to use the peel..

I guess it will have the same effect. What I am using is the clalamansi which is really locally available here in our country. Lime is also locally available which is really used in cooking and other sweets. Maybe next time I got lemons, I will try to grow some of its from the seeds.

Lemon peel (aka lemon zest) do have a lot of benefits, sometimes even more than the fruit itself. Remember trees produce the lemon skin to protect the fruit during its developing process and surely it will be fortified with vital nutrients and vitamins. Some researchers have also said that lemon zest have a cure for cancer. Some of the other benefits of lemon peel are: - It can be used to treat acne - It enhances the human skin - It has antioxidants that protect our DNA from being damaged - Also contain many vitamins that are vital to the body to replenish

The peel of the lemon has a shiny surface and this is the zest. Lemon zest is used in many dishes like stir fries and even salads. It is peeled off with a special peeler that takes just the thin skin off. The pith is the layer just beneath the the skin of the lemon. It has a much more bitter taste and is used in dishes to add bitterness. A lot of fine restaurants use both in cooking.

Hi, and welcome to myLot! Thanks for this info! This is interesting - I have used lemon slices to give good taste to water and a cheese grater to use the zest - have to look for that special peeler if it is available somewhere.. Have to do more research about how the restaurants use the lemon peel..

I love your idea of lemon peels, even if the benefits are not as good. I usually grate lemon peels in cakes (like that better than vanilla)or muffins. Custards are awesome with lemon peel too. But I have never tried it as part of a topping for a salad. I´ll do that tomorrow. I have organic lemons as my eldest daughter has a lemon tree.

This is a very good information. I only use the lemon peel when I need to add some lemon zest to whatever I need to cook. And that's it. Now I know other uses for it as well. And its quite easy to make use of.
