Why Do We Keep Doing Things That Are Harmful For Us?

*Thank you ersmommy1. Your response in my previous discussion gave me an idea to create this new one.*
I'll use myself as an example.
I believe by now I already have a carpal tunnel syndrome. My right hand keeps on feeling numb even if I am not doing anything. It also feels week and I can no longer close it tightly. The muscles in my hand, especially in the thumb area, hurts a little bit every now and then.
I have not yet confirmed this but I will go to the doctor later to have my hand checked.
We all know that carpal tunnel syndrome is usually due to the excessive use of computer mouse or whatever activities that put your hand in an awkward position (if you know what I mean :D)
Anyway, even though I am suspecting that I already have carpal tunnel, it does not prevent me from using the computer for long hours.
Why do we keep on doing things that are harmful to us?
Share your experiences as well! :)

As early as now try to lessen your usage of your mouse. Or if you have a laptop, just use your track pad. Though it is more difficult, it is safer than using a mouse.
Smoking is a habit that is hard to break. I hope you will be able to quit that before it does a serious damage to your lungs.
My mom has a friend who smokes a lot before. Because of her habit, she had a tuberculosis and was confined to the hospital for several weeks. When she got out, she was skin and bones. She said that she would not be willing to suffer like that again so she quit smoking.

Uh uh, using the computer mouse frequently causes carpal tunnel :xx...
Oh my, and I am feeling some numbness on my right hand
But I can't refrain from using the computer and I can't use the computer well without the mouse

You are right. It would be easier if I have a laptop. At least I have an option of using the track pad.
Well, I do hope that your condition would not be carpal tunnel.

I think that the reason that most of us keep doing things that are harmful for us is because of the fact that those things that are harmful to us are also something that is comforting to us.
For example, my late grandmother was told after she had a stroke to quit drinking and to quit smoking but she wasn't able to do it. Her reasoning was that she had already had her independence taken away from her and those two things were all that she had left to do.

She already had a stroke and yet she continued on doing those things? Wow. It is amazing how far we can go for the sake of doing these harmful habits of ours.
Do you have a harmful habit dorannmwin?

i think there are so much pleasure in doing harmful things that's why people can't help themselves but go on.

Well I guess you are right.
In my opinion, people generally do not think of their future. We enjoy what we have today then deal with the consequences of our actions tomorrow. I guess that is what you are saying mylzcantor08, that we take pleasure on what we today (whether it is good or bad) and worry about it when the downside of our actions have already taken it toll.

Do you find our human minds fascinating ranger07? We are deemed to be the highest forms of animals and yet we continue on doing things that are dangerous for us just because we enjoy it.
What a risky trade off with this precious lives of ours, I must say.
Anyway, I do appreciate your response. Thank you.
