Red-bellies are considered as 'real piranhas' meaning 'meat-eating killers'. In the Philippines, it is illegal to keep one. However, some people are still curious of having a piranha for pet. Would you want to keep one at home?

Hmmm...I think I'm quite interested. However, all those Hollywood movies have instilled a little bit of fear in me though....I think I'll be scared to clean the aquarium....lol
Also, aren't they difficult to have as a pet? I think you have to let them live in a special water or something?

No, they are OK. At least when they are alone in an aquarium. A lone piranha can even be shy when with a bigger fish. With small ones, a piranha tend to attack of course. It can be kept in a normal water. The type of water where a goldfish or a flower-horn fish can survive.

Well, if it's not hungry then I'm sure it won't bite. Anyway, Red-bellied piranha in particular, prefers not-so-fresh meat.

Wow that's so cool! I didn't know that.
Will a piranha bite me if I stick my hand in the aquarium? I know it sounds silly and I have no intention of doing that but since we're talking about having it as a pet...I think we should know all the potential threats don't you think? (lol)

You probably made them hungry :( You know, I believe they won't be savages when not hungry. But, its fun to see a group of fish in feeding frenzy. It's just scary when they bite off live moving things. Fortunately, is its only worms then its OK :)

OMG, them? You mean more than one piranha? That's scary. I would not also try putting my hand on a water with more than one piranha lol

I would not want to keep a piranha in my house as pet. Piranha is a very dangerous meat eating fish which it would be best to keep our family and the fish a safe distance. Besides that, piranhas are not very attractive and beautiful fish. It also does not have much of a market value to be sold to people. Well, I really can't think of a reason to keep it.

And its illegal too. But, one piranha can be safe and I've seen a real one - a red-bellied actually. I don't know if its my eyes, but I found its sparkling scales very beautiful under the light. But, its only my opinion. And I wouldn't keep a piranha too if I'll be the one to clean the aquarium lol

One can be enough for me. But, many? That can be scary. And yes, having an exotic animal for a pet can be cool. Around here, it's not easy to acquire piranhas since it is illegal.

Oh wow yes! ONLY if the piranha did not eat live food, I mean If I could just feed it meat, and not feed it something live, like a snake usually needs live food. Yes, if that were the case, then I would just love to get one! Espeically if the tank was large and roomy for it. But yes, I darned sure would love to have one, and I think that watching it feed would be a real interesting experience.

Pet piranhas can be given frozen porkmeat or liver. Live little kois are some real treats but a piranha can also enjoy big worms.

I would also settle for a goldfish. But, a piranha can be tougher than a goldfish. It can survive longer in a not so clean aquarium.

In India it is legal to keep piranhas. I have 5 piranhas in my fish tank. They look pretty. But unfortunately i cannot keep any other fish with them.
