on one hand I'm proud of myself on the other I wasted my time

I joined a charity crochet group. Now I wanted to try something a lil harder for my second project. I've been putzing with a entrelac stitch or in simpler terms it looks like a checker board of sorts for several hours today. I've barely got one row done (it's alot of work) and I've used close to half a skein, I only have 6 to use and I certainly can't have a project that's a mere 12 rows and shorter than they are looking for you to make it. UG! I'm proud I was able to catch onto how to do this stitch but not so happy that it's a yarn hog of a stitch. So I guess I'll be looking for another stitch or just go with another I have in mind I previously did. I just don't want to keep doing granny square motiff shawls KWIM?

Well, it's fun that you tried something new, but you're right, it's quite a yarn hog. What did you end up doing? I usually end up going back to something basic.

I just pulled it appart and made a triangular granny and flipped colors every so often in the middle for interest. I haven't turned it in yet as it's boring to me and I need to meausre it against one of my kids and then put some fringe on it.

You should be proud...it takes some work sometimes to catch on to a new stitch! Don't think of it as a waste of time....you learned something new!

The new stitch is why I'm proud. However it's the hours I spent trying to make that first row only to find out I don't think I'll have enough yarn to meet the size needed and that I have to rip out all my work and find something more basic perhaps?

Can you use a thinner thread of yarn and it do just the same or will that mess up the measurement of the finished project, and end up using just as much yarn? if not more? I hate that it's taking up so much yarn. Are these skeins the normal size or the plus sized skeins? Maybe you could find a group somewhere that someone has free yarn? Maybe someone has had this problem in the past and made a video for a similar stitch or a similar way to do it without using so much yarn. If there's a DC in the combination of the stitch maybe switch it to an SC.

They are normal sized skeins, 6 of them with a total of about 1500 yards of simply soft. I did get this yarn for free, that's one reason I like this group you are not put out to pay for the yarn, you basically donate your time and skills. I just don't think 6 in that stitch will due. I guess the stitch is similar to a tunisian stitch except it forms a checkered pattern. I do have some leftovers of a 1lb skein from my other project for the group that I could use to help out, but I still think a stitch that's a bit lighter on yarn usage is the way to go unless I end up with several skins of 1lb balls.

You should be proud for doing something out of your ordinary. I have dabbled in crocheting myself but only know how to do the single stitch so everything I made took a really long time and was heavy as heck. I did make a few blankets one for our couch and one for each of the kids.

For the longest all I could do was a chain stitch. For some reason I could not grasp how to add a second row let alone my tension... it was ugly. But I did find a lady on youtube whom I follow and have learned how to do other stitches from her. Let me know if you'd like her name or website. Her video's have helped me a lot! Plus if you have cold winters like I do just think of the hats and scarf's you could make your kids.

Your action will actually be appreciated by others and your family will surely be proud of you. Maybe the crochet took you a lot of time, but take it easy, change to another way to help others will also alright.

Yes I will have to change to another pattern, the question is what stitch and something that looks nice or maybe a lil bit of a challenge and leaves me enough yarn.
