Can you give yourself a real and beneficial education just using the internet?

I believe you can give yourself a real and beneficial education just using the internet? The resources available from britannia to wickepedia are excellent. Whatever you wish to learn from religion to science I believe formal school will become less necessary and students will be able to get an online education and do distance learning that will enhance the educational process. Instead of reading about germany or the great wall of China the Internet can take us there.

It can depend on what it is you are trying to learn but yes I think there are a lot of things you can learn from the internet. I am a self taught photographer and I would read articles from trusted pro photographers and I learned how to use my camera, the settings, how to take a good photo. And of course just lots of practise and experimenting. I'm just as good as those photographers that paid a lot of money for that piece of paper claiming they are qualified. Sometimes a self taught photographer is even better than the one that has the qualification

I agree. I have learned so much just by following my interests when I surf the 'net. I've been on the internet since 1995 and I still think it's awesome to be able to type anything into a search engine and get so much free information.
I don't know about it taking the place of schools, though. The government (at least in the US) doesn't think that people can direct their own learning or that they will leave serious gaps in their education if they are free to learn what they want to.
Personally, I think anything past basic math and reading skills should be left to the student. But that's another topic.

Long time no see Sourceseeker. Yes, i do get valuable information from the net. I refer to it often when i need some clarifications about medical stuff.

It is possible to educate yourself solely from using the Internet. I have learned French, German, and Russian from reading and taking tests on educational websites. I am also in the process of learning programming languages. I already am familiar with HTML and XHTML, but I need to understand CSS, PHP, and Java as well so I can market myself better for jobs.
