I can see jobs such as police officer, firefighters and so on. My friend works at a lab, not a big lab just testing products for companies. She was telling me the hassle of having to get a physical before getting the job and every so many months. Mind you she doesn't or hasn't had a complete doctors physical before. The physical is blood work, and everything except dropping your pants. I thought this was strange, but she said it was liability stuff.

Nowadays I am not too surprised this happens, for a number of reasons.
One, a company does want to know that their employees are going to be healthy if they are going to invest in them for a job. This means giving them training, salary, benefits, etc. Some companies just want to know that their investment in someone, not just monetarily but in job training and etc., is going to be worth it. If they go through the trouble of them being trained and spending time with them only to lose them in 3 months, then it can be frustrating and extremely costly to that company.
Like your friend said, there are also liability issues. Even though it is not a big physical job, being able to handle the potential stresses is important in many jobs. Physicals will reveal problems like stress or fatigue that can cause someone's work performance to dip or become erratic. Overall you want to have people that are relatively healthy and can contribute to the company.

I too went through physical and mental examinations before we undergo the training because they need to be sure that we are physically and mentally fit. It is indeed one of the requirements in our country especially if someone has to work with the government.

I went through all that, even the blood thing where I have to fast first before they got me tested; and my work is in an office. I think its also the organization's precautionary measure to ensure that the person they are hiring wouldn't need to tender a lot of sick leaves and leave his/her post anytime soon for health reasons.
