Gosh! This is really getting into my nerves! I was definitely right, my boyfriend and I do really have different definitions of the words love and affection. Well, it's not that I oppose our differences regarding our principles in that matter but what I can't accept is that these miscommunications almost leads to the fall out of our relationship. But at the end of the day, we managed to settle this thing. Thanks to God! He defined affection and love by weighing them. He said love is heavier than affection. As for me, the two words are synonymous. And now to you mylotters, how do you define love and affection? :)

the fact that you see love as being synonymous to affection only says that when you love someone you render affection to them. that is a really great part of you. on the other hand, to say the two are different says that is to say that you can have love for someone and not show any affection towards them. you have to admit, this is very possible although less desirable to you. you should show affection to someone you love, but you CAN love someone and not be affectionate. therefore, love and affection are two separate things that should could together (the operative word being SHOULD). the question at that point is why is the person who loves you not capable of showing affection. it may not be a flaw in you. rather, it's something within him that has nothing to do with you. perhaps, it is his upbringing. maybe he experienced something in his life that told him it was more safe or comfortable not to be affectionate.

Well, I guess so, but even though the problem is within him, I"m still affected. And because of that I'm eventually hurt. In your own opinion, how can I manage myself through this?

Moon is probably right on defining love and affection separately. We should not be seeing two different words as synonymous for it will confuse us and have misunderstanding with many other people. We should try to use the most common words and be open-minded about the understanding of other people.
