My dog is a friendly 5 year old Pit bull. He loves children and runs around with them when i take him to the park. What i am afraid of is when another large dog might challenge him to a fight that is why I would rather just walk him with a leash. Problem is I am growing old and don't seem to be strong now to control him. Now, I just leash him at home and sit beside him when I have time.

Such bigger dogs here must be walked on leash with muzzle on their mouth, if they are around many other people. They say the breed is little dangerous and unpredictable. I actually believe that the character of a dog depends on the owner, so I don't really believe people are putting any efforts to make their dogs aggressive. Just some dogs are like that, but others not. Still for everyone's safety, the walks are with muzzle.

Hi, i think a muzzle would be a great idea. he may not like wearing it but when you say were going to go for a walk he'll forgive you, then maybe you can still take him out on a leash dogs really need their walks if theyre indoor dogs especially i hope this will work out for you do you have anyone else in your house that could go with you on walks to help control him?

I know muzzles would be very annoying right now in the summer, because it's so so hot. And the dog may have heart stroke when the temperature outside reach 37 c degrees, so muzzles wouldn't be the best thing in the heat, but still it's something instead of nothing. If you have a garden you may play with the puppy there throwing toys and the dog will give them back.
Our puppy knows how to do it since he was very small and we still didn't walk him, because he didn't have all the shots he needed. It was a good thing which kept him fit, in good shape, because having overweight is not good, it may lead health problems.

If you are not sure about his reactions toward other dogs, you should not let them off leash, especially in public places.
You can't just sit beside your dog when you have time. He needs to exercise, especially he is young. Maybe you could hire a dog walker to give him the opportunity to walk at least an hour a day.

I don't understand. Why do you have to keep the dog on a leash when you are at home? You mentioned your lack of strength . Does the dog not respond to voice control?

I see. Maybe you should just keep him in the house when you can't be with him. Someone else suggested that you hire a dog walker. That is an excellent idea, if you can afford it. A pit bull needs exercise.

Although my dogs are smaller than your pitbull i know , I do not walk them because of the same fear.
Mine are askals, smaller ones but friendly too just like any other breed.
If I find them bored, I just run with them around our frontyard.
Sometimes walking them on the same premise makes them enjoy their day too.
This activity is not regular though.
I do it when I am in the mood

Oh That's sad, I bet your dog loves the morning walk. Well, you need Ceasar Milan hehehe. He can teach you a thing or two on how to anticipate your dog's bad behavior. He said, dogs can sense tension in their owners physical and mental state. If we are more relax, our dogs are more likely to submit and be calm as well. I don't know much about dog psychology but you can read books about them or watch "The Dog Whisperer".

I agree that this may not be whats best for the dog. Maybe have one of your children or younger family members walk him and dog sit for you. Dogs need alot of attention and running and playing is also a good way to give that attention but it is also useful for the fitness of the dog and to keep it healthy. I think if the dog just stays in the house then it may react the same way a person would if they were locked up in the house all the time and not allowed to socialize with anyone else.

aww that is really sad that you are weaker now and arent able to control him enough when taking him for walks. Maybe someone you know say a young man would be willing to take him for a walk once in awhile for you. I am sure that would make the dog happy. They need their exercise. I am happy though that you arent deciding just to give him up because you are getting older as so many people just dump their animals so often.
