Hi mothers and fathers, too. Its my first time to use pacifier for my baby. My first born never liked sucking any type of pacifier before. I had to use pacifier this time around, because my new baby has gas problems often, and she is colicky. It's said that pacifiers can help soothe her. It did help a lot and I also read that pacifier can reduce risk of SIDS.
But, Im also concerned of the ill effects of using this. I've read it could case tooth problems, sleep disorders and latex allergy. Of course, right now, I won't be able to see those negative effects yet. Im getting more help than problems, so the pacifier has become mommy's bestfriend.
I want to hear from my dear lotter moms and dads on their experience in using pacifier. Did it really cause problems on your kids when they grew up? How bad? What are your suggestions in the right use of pacifiers?
Thanks for your help.

The pacifier is more of a help to me. I had my 1st baby on pacifier too because he drinks too much milk even though he's already full. so he has the tendency to always vomit. With the pacifier, after a bottle of milk, he will not ask for more. And he sleeps well too with it. When he turned 1, he accidentally bite it and was torn. he did not want to use it anymore after that. And he neither asked for it anymore.
With my 2nd baby now, it's the same case with his elder brother. I am just also hoping he will also get rid of it when he turns 1. I do not want to see him, especially when he already learns to walk, to still use his pacifier. For me, pacifier is only good for infants.

What was the pacifier made of, that made your first baby despise it a lot after he bit it?

At least it served its purpose. Did you notice any problem as a result of using pacifier up to a year old?

I think it's made of silicon... when it was torn, my baby doesn't like to use it maybe because everytime he sucks, there's already an air that will pass through the hole. And it just instantly happened that he doesn't ask for it anymore. He was about 1 year and 3 months then...

My daughter has been using pacifiers for over a year now. They can not cause allergies never heard of that. It is true that it can cause teeth problems but only after the baby teeth fall out which a child will start lowing around the age of 7 which is away to old to be sucking on a pacifier. Every child is different it does lower the risk of SID so does truing on a fan while they are sleeping. Allergies are caused by being overly having antibodies to to that that is what cause a reaction. Now my daughter has no allergies to anything that I'm. Now my daughter use pacifiers just for teething she isn't allowed to have them in the day time unless she is sleeping.

Baby teeth don't fall out till a child is about 6 or 7 so its okay for a few years after 2 but normally its easier before late toddler years to get the pacifier to be taken away. You never know your child might stop on her own. A lot of babies do that for themselves. My daughter still use the pacifier because she is teething and has 4 more teeth coming in but for the most part she is only allowed the binkie is what she calls it till bed time other wise she is just fine in the day time.

Yeah, I think the biggest problem when toddlers continue using it when they're 3yrs or older is their dependency on it, and the harder for them to give it up.
Don't you think its better to use a teether instead of a pacifier for your daughter. I think its made of different material that is safer for teething babies.

Ok, that sounds good. So, allergies aren't really that common, and the teeth problem only comes when a baby continues to use pacifiers more than 2yrs of age.
I do plan to only let her use it until about 6-8 months.

Our son was stopped using pacifier at the age of 6 months. My wife read something about the disadvantage of using pacifiers. They said that it ill make babies dependent of it. Somewhat true because there are times my son would like to have pacifier rather than milk when he feels hungry.
Also, there are some I know that they cannot stop using pacifier until the age of three. Just like my cousin, she cannot sleep without it. Take note she is already 6 years old that time. Another, our neighbor, age of three, still uses pacifier even when he is going to school or playing.
I guess continous use of pacifier may affect the palate form of the kids, just like when they are still drinking milk thru feeding bottles.

We just hide the pacifiers when we started to let him stop using it. However, one day, we saw it again and asked her nanny if she used to give it to him. She answered yes beause my son cried for it. What we did is to throw it away. From then on, he did not look for it anymore.
You are right, as parents, we should be responsible for this issue.

Oh my, so the nanny gave in to make their job easier. More than parents, its really the nannies who spoil our kids. They would easily give in to the kid's demands, and break our rules. I really hate that.

Oh my, bringing a binkie to school is just ridiculous. The kid's gotta learn to let go way earlier than they can even start to walk. You did a good job at 6 months. Babies will start losing their need for sucking at 4-6 months, thus, parents should also start to take that away from the routine. It becomes more of a habit than a need when its past a year old. A habit that will be harder to break.
