Is it true that you cannot smell yourself?

I mean, if you're really really smelly, you wouldn't be able to notice it because your nose smells it as "normal". Then all the other people that surround you may feel that they can't tell you about it because they're too respectful. So is it true that you won't be able to notice your own smell?

Yeah it is true. It is because we are adapted to that smell when exposed to long time. If the smell is abnormal at that time in a sudden we could smell our own. A few people who are so sensitive could find their smell so easily.

OK, now this is making me thoroughly confused now. Some people say that it's true, some people say that it's not true. (sighs)

if so, then this maybe the reason why somebody i know seldom takes a bath. He smalls terribly but his wife seems to have adopted to his smell and funny thing is, vice versa hahaha.

I sometimes feel that I need to tell another person that they smell bad but I'm just afraid that they might feel offended by it.

I'm afraid I cannot smell myself completely. I would wonder if I have bad breath or not even right after brushing my teeth although I can notice well enough if my underarm and feet stinks. lol

Oh, bad breath is another thing. I wish there's some kind of meter to tell if you have bad breath.

OK, that sounds easy enough. I'll have to do it when no one's looking though. Problem is, you can't trust everyone nowadays. They're always looking. ALWAYS. (deep sigh)

Ahahaha! ^__^ doesn't work for me. My hubby always told me that I have a bionic nose because I can smell bad odor even if it's miles away! [but of course he was just exaggerating.] I just don't like bad smell and whenever I smell bad I would take a bath already or just wear another clean shirt and shorts. I don't like being sweaty, much more smelly! And if we are talking about like.. bad breath since it's the closest to the nose... well I guess you can include that as something that you're immune, but is you have a real bad taste on your mouth, don't you want to gargle it off or just brush it thoroughly instead? ^__^ We can fee and taste it if out breath already needs brushing... don't you think?

Yeah, I'm not a biologist or medical professional, but I do know the nose and mouth are nerve-connected or something of that sort. So it would be easy to feel when you have bad breath. Unless of course you have some rotten teeth festering that you haven't realized for so long.

Yah.. that's not true, for me you will be the first to know if you smell bad or not..unless you are not really mine what your smell are. Me I'm the one who notice first if I'm smell bad or not. When I feel that I smell bad, then I ask my friends or my mother or sister if I smell bad already and they sad not. there are really times that you think you smell bad already but the others can't, maybe because it's depend on the air, where the way it go. and it depends of how strong your smell are.. hehehhe. it's just like, if you smell your body close or if you wipe your hands in part that it's had a smell you really smell it but in a distance it's not, there some condition like that.

I don't think that it is true. I can smell myself. I can smell the stink when I am sweating.

But how about the times when you are not sweating but you still have intense body odor that you can't smell? OK, just making you paranoid. Forget that I said it. Heh. ^^

It is not true everytime. Sometimes we realize that we are smelling in our group but we do not accept but yes I also realize the fact that at times one doesn't realize the same. I have a friend of mine who smells bad at times but completely fails to recognize this fact. He is a good friend of mine, and I know that he is not the kind of person who will not accept his fault. Hence I feel that may be he is not getting my observations. It may be true that you cannot smell yourself.

Yep. It's "habituation" as someone else pointed it out. There really is a chance that you're the only one who cannot smell yourself.

Honestly in a way, yes. However like the first responder said if you get stanky enough you will be able to smell yourself. IF you do not bathe regularly you may get used to the smell so much that you don't realize it offends. Such as a stench in a house, if you get used to it after awhile it doesn't bother you, you don't smell it. Others do, however, and they may or may not say anything about it.

That's not true, I can perfectly tell if I already smell and when I am fragrant as well. But it is possible for other people to identify or differentiate your smell/fragrance much more than yourself, because we are much used to our smell than other people.

I don't think so. Whenever I have had to skip a bath for a day for some reason, I have felt the smell of sweat emitting from my body. It is not true that our nose cannot detect our own smell.

Hi inkyuboz: That's not completely truth. At least when I am smelling really bad I can feel it aand it makes me want to take a shower But of course, sometimes we don't notice that we smell because we get accustomed to it so we don't find any difference that the others do. ALVARO

I honestly sniffed myself after reading the subject lol! Of course you can smell yourself, even if you're only starting to get sweaty, you'll be able to tell that there's a change in your smell. Maybe those people that you're referring to who have the stinky "normal" smell grew up with not so good hygienic practices that's why that's their "normal" smell while they're growing up.
