Online jobs or corporate jobs?

I have been reading about success stories from ODESK users/contractors. And I have been hearing about ODESK since 2008 and have not stirred interest in me until now. Been tired with corporate life already plus I want to spend more time with my son as he is already growing so fast. I know that working for the corporate world has its benefits and flaws as well. Leaving my 5-9 deskjob would mean saying goodbye to bonuses, incentives and allowances and guaranteed monthly salary even sometimes if I go on leave from work. But from the success stories I read about working in ODESK is that they were able to buy house, cars and put up their own business already. Anybody here who works for ODESK? What would you recommend to me? Stay in the corporate world or get hired through ODESK?

there are people who fit in the online job offered by odesk. there are people who do not thrive in online and freelance jobs. at first, you may try on online jobs. if you can do both you day time job and online job, then hold on to both as long as you can until one is able to finance your lifestyle, savings, social security, and expenses.

Hello, I have been working for oDesk since 2009 until now. I'd say, if you want to spend more time with your son, you should try and stay on oDesk. Because from my experience, I got paid more through oDesk than the corporate job I had before. The only difference is that, I do not have benefits and bonuses in oDesk but to sum all my salaries, I think its still higher than the benefits and bonuses that I had in my corporate job. And some employers I've got in oDesk also offers bonuses. The one I'm working for now though he's not from oDesk, gave me Christmas, birthday and calamity bonuses so far. And sometimes, you can find employers in oDesk that offers benefits like what you are getting in a corporate job. Good luck!

Wow, this sounds hopeful after all! Can you give an advice shingshing on how you keep your project going? I mean, what happens if one project already ended, do you wait for a new project (like what happened in my case)? Or how is it done?

At first, it was really difficult to find projects. But as you build your reputation, you do not have to apply anymore. You'll just get invitations from employers. Hmmm.. Based from my experience, you'll have more chance of getting hired when you're an early bird. So what I did is to always monitor the job posts and apply as fast as I can. When I see jobs that has already 20+ applicants, I do not apply anymore because the employers did not respond anymore to late applicants unless you really have a good profile.

I read also success stories from people working in ODESK. Even a friend I know the one who teach me working online said that he buy his own car from the payment he received. I try to pass the exam in ODESK and I pass it. But until now I didn't find any suitable jobs. I don't if ODESK is for me because one of my friend that I introduce to odesk is now working and have a permanent employer. I think if you want to be a corporate you need to have your own company or manage a business. But if you want to work alone you need to be get hired

Hello Aileen, I know ODESK is a good site but then to compare it with offline job i don't know if it right.I have never tried on ODESK but i know people are earning well from it.It depends if you get good contracts then you are going to earn from it otherwise it is like other ordinary sites.

Hi Aileen, I am an odesk member but I am not active now. I have a night shift job in one of the bpo companies here in the Philippines. At first, I thought about letting go of my 'real job' and instead, focus on earning money online but I have come to a decision not to let go of my real job. The pay at Odesk is good but that is if you have continuous projects. So in short, I still want to work at Odesk but it will just be a sideline for me. Health Insurance is one the reasons why I can't let go of a corporate job. If I get sick, or if my son gets sick, I know I cannot cover those so I depend on my health benefit.

Yeah, lots of people earned money from odesk. But my suggestion is that there is no need to quit your current job, cause you know, it is difficult to find a job, some people quit their job to make money online, I think it is not reasonable, they will take high risk, they will under great pressure once they can't do well on their online job, so you should think it over.
