Fearful of the movies? Batman shootings.

Yesterday, I went to watch the new Christopher Nolan Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises. An interesting thing I faced was the inextinguishable fear and anxiety I felt when going to the theater. This was due to the recent shootings in Colorado during a midnight showing of the film. I wasn't exactly scared of someone coming in and shooting; I was more overwhelmed by my own thoughts. The poor victims of the shooting were simply going to watch a film with possibly their friends and family, and some didn't return that night. The projected earnings of the film for the opening weekend were around $170 million, and the estimated earnings were a few million short of that estimate. Many say they haven't gone to see the film due to the shootings. Would you ever be fearful of going to the movies after such an event?

What do you mean if I would be? I am so scared I don't think I can go back to the movies. It is like flying after what happened on 9/11. I don't think I can convince myself much to get on an airplane. I just wonder how could or can anyone enjoy going to the movies to specially watch that particular movie. It is so freaky. Not even kidding one bit.

I completely agree with you. Comparing it to flying and 9/11 hits it right on the spot. Especially with this movie, there were some scenes that made you so fearful that the sounds you were hearing weren't from the movie, but coming from inside the theater. It was such an unfortunate accident. I'm fearful that other movies may cause other people to continue this trend of attacks.

I do not think you are alone. They said that the movie was twenty minutes in before the man started shooting. I imagine if I was watching the movie in the theater, I'd be thinking, I wonder if this part in the movie is when these people started getting shot? I don't plan on seeing that movie, but I didn't plan on it before the shooting either. However, I have heard some young kids say they didn't want to see the movie anymore. I imagine when it comes out on DVD they will, but a lot of them don't want to go inside the actual theater. They interviewed a mother and son (the son was probably 13), and they had tickets to see Batman before the shooting. The day after the shooting they asked for their money back because the young boy was too freaked out to go in and watch it.

Especially with things such as Netflix and other DVD rental places now, I think this event will have a toll on the future action and thriller movies. I mean, who's to say that this man's actions haven't influenced or, in a horrible way, inspired others to utilize this method of destruction? It is so fearful to think of, and such a sad things for those affected. I still find it weird how he was able to get in the theater through an exit though, and I was surprised when I went to the movie that there weren't security checks happening. I think that they might have to employ some security measures in movie theaters from now on. It may slowly start to become a dying past time :(

Oh wow, I was not aware of that. That is really quite frightening, both how he thought of doing that and the fact that there isn't really a way to prevent things like this from happening again.

I read about this incident online and I also read something about one "Baptist Church" thinking that this is God's work. It is totally insane. I empathize to those who lost their lives and to the families they left behind. I also have 8-year old boy who always asks me if we can watch DC/Marvel movies in theaters. I could imagine children eagerly and happily going to the movies with their parents and friends.. I don't know if this is terrorism or just random insane mas killing but nevertheless it is very hateful. If I were there in the U.S., I would also feel the same fear and anxiety. I might not be able to roam the malls for days..

I think this event caused a lot of people to wonder what the man's motive was behind the entire attack. It was interesting to me because he was studying in a PHD program in neuroscience, from what I heard. I also heard that when the police called to alert his mother of the event, she already knew that it was her son that had did something bad.
