I am going to be starting college soon (yay!) and will be attending my first real lecture. In my previous schooling, we weren't allowed to take laptops to college to take notes; everything was handwritten. I like writing my notes because it helps me retain information better, but I am worried that these lectures will be fast and I will want to type my notes to keep up with the professor. I think a combination of both would be best for me personally, depending on the class. It may be more practical to take handwritten notes in classes such as math, to write down examples and make calculations.
So my fellow mylotters, do you like hand writing your notes or typing them up on the computer?

I preferred handwritten when I was in college because it help me to memorize and familiarized the lecture easily. I think most of the professor in college give handouts and sending their power point presentation through e-mail like what I experienced during my college days.

I prefer using and reading handwritten notes. Typing takes away that weird pleasure when taking down notes by hand. Besides, it's faster to create footnotes and extra details with your pen. Unless you're using a tablet or some sort of convenient gadget, I believe handwritten notes still take the cake when it comes to education.

In the past I liked to leave the messages and send it to my colleagues' chatting software. It is much more environmental and it can make sure my colleagues will read it once they are back. But now since my colleagues don't often get online in the chatting software. So I have to take notes by hand and stick them on their desks so that they will see it when they are back.

I prefer both the notes handwritten and typed. Because when I read the books then write the notes but when I search from net then copy paste and print. But handwritten notes is good.

When it comes to jotting down key ideas while in a lecture, I would prefer it hand written. It is easier to impress some in your mind by manually putting it on a piece of paper. As for the typing, it may be convenient but when the time comes to recall, it will be more challenging.

I suggest that you can combine the two ways to take notes. That means, you can take handwritten notes which is helpful to your handwriting and memory about the contents, and on the other hand, you can copy the PowerPoint or other scripts about the lecture from your teacher to ensure the completeness of your notes. Have a great time in your college!

In my college days, laptops are not yet easily available in the market and it was really expensive that time. We did a lot of taking notes from our teachers. You can use both but it is more favorable to use hand written first because like what you said, it will be more effective to retain information in your memory. Then you can transcribe it in your laptop. This method will let you review again your topics upon transcribing it in your laptop.
Likewise, math solutions as well as other topics that needs some formula as well as sturctures must be hand written.
By the way, you should ask your professors first before using laptop in school. Some might be intimitated when their students use laptop while in school.

I prefer handwritten notes. I learn and retain information better and faster that way. Moreover, I am able to keep up with the professor and the discussion when I write as I am faster in writing than I do in typing. Anyway, unless your professor says otherwise, you have a free reign on how you will take down your notes. You can write it down, type it, or you can do both as long as it works for you.

I found out that I write faster than I type so I guess during lecture I would prefer writing my notes. I'm also partial to pens of different ink colors and highlighters. Although a laptop can also do it, I think it would just be more tedious than just simply using a stabilo.
I will probably transfer some notes into my laptop for printing later on so it will be more organized when I have to go back to it for reviews and stuff.
