Where should you hang a flat screen (plasma) tv?

My husband and I want to get a flat screen tv, but we are having a debate about where to put it. He thinks it is ok to hang it on any sturdy wall, whereas I think it is not necessarily a good idea to hang it on an "outside" wall (one that has one side which runs along the outside of the house). To me, it seems that the fluctuations in temperature, air pressure, wind, etc., could affect the plasma screen, but he says no. Anyone have any opinions/experience with this issue?

This is a good point--do you have to buy a special TV stand for it?

That I knew, which adds to the price. So sitting it on a table or shelf is cheaper, I guess.

the fact that you have to hang the tv on a bracket means that the tv is already insulated from the wall by the bracket and air - so, unless you can stand next to the outside wall and feel an air current, I can think of no reason not to hang it on any wall...
It isn't like it hangs on a nail on the wall, believe me, once that tv is up, it will have to be unscrewed to get down again - those things are made to stay...

Thanks. I was thinking more along the lines of house settling issues, or perhaps movement or sharp changes in temperature caused by wind gusts. And not that the TV will fall, but that the screen (which seems pretty sensitive) will be affected. Do you think this is a concern?

Does that mean I have to tell hubby that he was right????? Thanks for checking, though! Makes me feel better when we do hang it on the wall.

(Slightly OT!)...I remember reading about the confusion felt by someone when their friend mentioned they HAD No TV..."So what is your furniture pointing at,then ?!"
I don't think it's important which wall your big TV hangs on..It's your taste in interior design that's going to be the key factor here, not the machine's temperament..unless there's wind and rain whistling through gaps in the wall you may be considering.. so long as you have enough room to hang it up and make sure it stays up,non-standard installation wiring isn't going to cost an arm and a leg, and nobody's getting a crick in the neck trying to watch it,I'm sure it'll be fine..

very good points, shepherd! We do have enough room, because we are not getting one of the giant screens, just a medium-sized one. I am sure it will be fine, but as I think about it, none of our TVS are on outside walls even the old-fashioned ones so maybe it does have something to do with my interior decorating!

I am not an expert in this field but based on what I usually see at homes, business establishments, restaurants, eateries, etc. They usually hang flat screen lcd tvs indoors, also I assume that this plasma is really big compared with some regular lcd tvs? Anyway, it could also be just the same as the other flat screen tvs in terms of size, since they just differ in the technology used. Like what others have mentioned, for practical reasons I would definitely suggest that you put in indoors and hang it on a durable wall or part of your home.

Hhhmmm. . .let me clarify. . .I am not going to hang my TV outside (with or without your popcorn and lawn chair, thanks anyway bluedoll. . .). I am asking if it can be hung on an INSIDE wall that has one side facing the exterior of the house, as opposed to a wall that has all sides surrounded by the interior of the house (and thus more climate-controlled, theoretically).
Although it would be nice to be rich enough to afford a TV for our backyard, too.

They actually need cool air as they do generate heat so don't think a cool wall will hurt it. Another consideration is seating arrangements. I find depending on the quality of the screen a direct view perpendicular to the screen is better than one off to the side. For this reason I put mine on the table where it can be turned depending on where the viewer is seated or a compromise.

Very good tips, thanks. However, we have 2 kids and 4 cats so I am a little worried about putting something that expensive on a table, where it can be knocked over--and then bye-bye flat screen, for sure!

It's going to be a trade off. Finger prints are more delicate for removal. They don't recommend using water and soap but a dry clean cloth as the screen is plastic and easily scratched.
Maybe you could turn it on and view it to see the difference in quality from all angles to see for yourself. They are fairly heavy but I understand the reasons for putting it securely on the wall. They have a bracket you can buy for that purpose but mine came with a big base so it is not too tipsy.
Hope you enjoy it as much as I have mine. My dvd player and vcr were garbage too so I bought a used xbox off a friend to play dvds and the sims game which was fun. I get my dvd's from the library. It is a long wait though.

Maybe if the one we buy comes with a big sturdy base, that will solve the dilemma. Something to look for when we shop, I suppose. Yes my kids want an Xbox, but we just recently got a Wii so they will just have to wait! The money doesn't seem to be growing on the tree as fast as I would like--must be global warming!!

It' good that you are getting a nice flat screen tv for your home. I agree that the tv should not be hang outside. A nearby eatery have a flat tv that they hang outside for the customers. but at the end of day, they will store it back inside. It is because, the rain might damage the tv.

Yes I suppose I could just hang it on a tree and then charge the neighbors admission!

Don't hang it over a fireplace. It looks nice but it overheats. Make sure you hang it in eye level or just a little over it. Get a wall mount, something like this.

So you can turn it to see straight if you hang it high.
Don't hang it too high, your neck will hurt after a movie.
Trust me, I was a TV salesman for 5 years. Get a good wall mount.

In my opinion, I believe that placing your plasma television on a wall which is not affected or vulnerable to any disturbance would be best. You have to find a wall which conveniently facing the sofas or bed and has nothing that can emits pressure, heat and other disturbance. This may help your plasma television to last longer and comfortable for you two to enjoy.

That is my thought too. . .but I can't really find any information to support that just my intuition! But you know what they say about women's intuition. . .
