When I was little, I always used watermelons to sit on after we bought one from the store. My mom always warned me, "don't fart on it or it will explode!". I do also believe that the charaacters on each TV show were actually IN the TV.
So, what are you beliefs that your parents thought you when you were young?

Here in the Philippines most of the elder scares the children to behave when the kids are so lazy, so we have this belief when you get hurt and your flesh/wound is little open the rice, the train, the horse, and etc scary things will came out of that wound. hahaha well then I grown up now I laugh about that then pass it to my niece and nephews. sweet revenge :)

...and the priest will also come out? Elders often say it. "If you get wounded/ cut your self the priest will come out".

I did not doubt her since i saw it on television(cartoon shows). You know what i guess all of us here believed that if we swallowed seed it will grow inside our stomach. I remember also i planted a mango seed with sugar cause i thought it will make the mango sweet. hahahaha

when I was 3, I saw an icetea commercial on TV, On that commercial a woman intentionally makes her self fall on a blue mat or blanket on the floor after drinking a glass of ice tea (my memory is not that clear) The mat/rag/blanket whatever it is, turned into a swimming pool.....
I tried to immitate it, I drank a glass of icetea and make my self fall on a blue blanket on the floor. I got concussions...
I am one of those toddlers who thought everything on Tv is real.

Take the Nestea Iced Tea plunge! That's the tagline of that famous campaign. I remember it well and my brothers and I tried to imitate it. Only we made ourselves fall on beds.

Maybe it's part of our culture. My mom was also a victim of misconceptions. When she was a little her mom said if she won't allow her to clean her head and remove the lice, she will bring her to their kingdom(fly).

Oh lmao! That's so cute. I'm stealing that;)
When I was little my grandma told me that if I smelt this white flower( they grew all around) I would die!
To this day I do not sniff those flowers! It's amazing what we believe as children and what we take with us!

I was once told by my sister that white cows made regular milk and that brown cows made chocolate milk, and I believed her for years and found out the truth when i explained it to my parents,they burst into laughter.

hahahaha me too. Every time i eat watermelon i get to swallow the seeds since it's tiny and a lot to remove so most of the time i intentionally swallow it and my mom noticed it so she told me that it will grow inside my stomach and branches will soon come out in my nose, mouth, ears and etc..

This wasn't mine but you mentioned watermelons which made me think of when we were kids we were told not to eat watermelon seeds because a watermelon plant would grow in your stomach... so this prompted one of my friends to pick all the seeds off of her strawberries, following the same logic.
I can't really think of anything that I myself believed because some adult told me it was true. I'll have to think on it.

Mine is different i thought i can fly using a broom stick(like witches do) and at midnight the broom will sneak out and fly freely and return before sunrise. I used to guard the broom and waited until midnight but sadly i fell asleep. So, i assume he's watching me.

Iremember one that my mom would always say "don't make those faces" or your face will stay that way." Another one was "if you crosses your eyes they would stay that way." The best was that Liver was good for us. That was a big lie! Come to find out my mom really thought it was good for us and she didn't even like it herself. However, she made us eat it and then you grow up and find out its not really good for you. She says do you think I would have made you guys eat it if I had known it wasn't good for you? I didn't like it myself! I'm sure there are more but I can't think of them right now.

I remember when I was young my mother would tell me not to point at the moon. If I do then I will lose that finger. When I was young it was not the fashion to question so I never knew why I mustnt point at the moon.
Being old now sometimes I learned why some of these myths were made up. I suspect that maybe the people in the past learned it through experience that what and what shouldnt be done. I think in the not-to-point-at-moon myth lies in the reason that sometimes when there is an eclipse, we shouldnt look directly at the moon.
But whatever the reason is I think its not smart to tell lies to little children. Especially now, it might just backfire on you in being the stupid one. But maybe that is all the older people have to avoid mishaps, they probably do not know the real reason themselves.

As you said, there are a lot of such funny thoughts at that time. It was one of my thought that when we are travelling in a speedy bus or jeep or any vehicle, the nearby trees and plants are runnig fast to backward and I really enjoyed assumign that all those trees, houses, people (whatever on the side) were runnig back. I never discussed it anyone assuing that it was a reality and all people feel the same.
We had a huge garden infront our house and my parents used to cut the rose plants and used the branchs and stem to replant the roses in different places. As I know that there would be roots below the plant, I used to plant the stem in opposite direction to see the roots to come out in the air, instead of going downward to the earth.
And there are so many foolishness were there and feel like laughing now, when think about all. Thanks for this nice topic.

Also, there is another plant called Cassava (tapioka), [I don't know what is called in your language] and its root also, if we plant it upside down, sometime the roots may emerge if we are planting at the season time (beginning of monsoon). As this is one of the diet crop for us, we used to plant this largly at times and some times unknowingly if we plant upsid down, the roots will emerge from the down-side planted root from the botom of the soil.
Anyway, child hood is a time for all such fun and once we grown up, these are the great pleasure moments to recollect and to live like a child even if we grown up...

My dad told me that Michael Jackson and Prince were the same person. My uncle told me that worms fall from the sky when it rains... and in elementary school an oriental kid name Patrick loved Patrick Roy (Hockey Goalie)... since Roy was a goalie, all his hockey cards had a mask on so I never saw his face. I always assumed the reason Patrick liked him was because Patrick Roy was oriental too. Turns out Patrick Roy is white, and he only liked him because they shared the same name... man I was dumb when I was a kid!

My mom use to always say to my brother where's daddy is he in your pocket? Get him out of your pocket and he'd be trying all the time to get him out of his pocket. I was told one time when I was about five or six that my girl friend's mom said she was 100 years old and I believe her. She was native american and I just know they live to be at least 100 -- I still believe it to this day.

There were many such interesting things in my memory:
My mom didnt allow us to point the moon with fingers, she said the moon would hurt our ear
if we dont listen to her;
We must sleep on a pillow,or the neck will vanish;
"We got you from the rubbish"
"Children can't eat chicken claw, or you are not good at handwriting"
"You will be not getting taller if you step on your shadow"

Besides the TV part, I was told then not to eat the seeds of a water melon or papaya. If I do so, the plant/trees will grow on my head or through the ears. So imagine a little boy, spending a long time removing all the seeds before eating the fruit. I still remember there was once when I got so worried when I accidentally swallow one of the seeds. There are many more childhood beliefs that if I am to list them all down, it will fill out an entire page.
