I have potatoes and they smell horrible and are wet and the bottom of the bag. Why does it smell like that?

Probably from must. Or they are bad. My mom said that it's probably a mixture of both and she said to always check to see if vegetables are bad before buying them.

Clearly they have gone rotten. Potatoes must be kept dry and in an airy place. A plastic shopper is the worst place to keep potatoes.

Hi and welcome to mylot! I place raw potatoes in a carton big enough so that they can "breathe" I then place them in a cold place with no light (I use my garage). If they smell awfull, maybe some of them are rotten. Throw the bad ones away.

I`m sure that those potatoes are rotten. The only thing to do is to throw them away. I love potatoes and I think the only "smell" they have usually is a soil smell.

Potatoes smells bad when not stored well. They smell horrible when they rot. Whenever I bought potatoes, I make sure I take them out of the bag so that they remain fresh until the time I need them. I like putting them on stews of here in my place we called it "tinola" for chicken and "nilaga" for beef and pork.

ishaismyname hi they are rotten from bacteria growing in them making a noxious gas. I think this is one of the worst of bad bad odors. So throw them out as they would make you very ill.
