A friend of mine just had a baby and stated that she is looking forward to sharing her favorite classic Disney movies with her child. It makes me sad to think that the style of kids movie I grew up with is gone.
The Lion King. Aladdin. The Little Mermaid. Pocahontas. Mulan. Beauty and the Beast. Sleeping Beauty. So many of them that came out in the 80s and 90s (and even before) with their classic animation style and bold heroes and pretty princesses. They inspired many Halloween costumes when I was growing up, and even at nearly 30 years old I still enjoy my morning coffee out of a Disney princesses mug. With the help of technology our animated movies now look more like Toy Story and Shrek, all 3-d computer animation. It makes me sad to think today's children won't know about these lovely classics... Unless their parents are like me and have a handy DVD library of the Disney classics on hand to show them.
Today's movies are cute and all, but I wonder if they are focusing more on making them pretty than making them about the story... but I'm biased, I love the Disney classics.
What do you think? Are today's kiddos getting the better movies, or are they missing out on the classics? Do you have a favorite Disney classic?

I love the songs in Disney movies! One of my Pandora stations is dedicated to classic Disney music and other show tunes.

I agree the story line in most of the new movies has changed. When Disney was alive to watch over how things were done it was about the story. Now it is about the story but also how many characters they can fit into the movie. The characters make money and that is what Disney is after now. The more characters that a story has then there is less directed at the stories plot. But the more characters allows them to sell more products as toys.

I am not able to speak for all children, but I can say that most of the children that I know are quite well aware of the classic Disney movies that I grew up with. The reason that I believe this is the case for most children is because of the fact that Disney does re-release their classic movies about once every ten years and that does mean that most children will have the opportunity to be familiar with those movies.
For me, I had many favorites including The Lion King, 101 Dalmations and Beauty and the Beast

I grew up on the same era of disney that you did, i also loved cinderella, snow white, and alice in wonderland -- the latter of which is my favourite disney movie along with sleeping beauty and the fox and the hound.
the fox and the hound was the first movie to ever make me cry!! that came out in 1980 and the others in the 50s or so. then in the 80s and 90s the resurgence of disney films i think they are not getting the 'better movies' but they just get more movies hopefully theyll still enjoy the primitive graphics but i would show them these films theyre great and so beloved. i think many of the newer films are also geared towards us disney kids who love disney and will carry on watching pixar, a lot of those films have sad or adult type tones.
you should be this kids disney mentor!! the fun 'aunt' who makes her/him watch aladdin every week ;)

I am totally agree with for that, I miss all the movies that you mention up there all disney classic movies are more wonderful than today, I'm upset on disney that when they said they don't want to create a movies/films that has a happy ending stories or fancy movies. I am 90s kid and I really miss all of the 90s show including disney classics.
