Oh, I haven't solved the mystery yet, but I did sort of remedied the lack of ability of my husband to shoot the dirty clothes right into the hamper. I threatened that anything that isn't properly put in the basket for clothes for washing will be treated as trash, and off to the trash bin it will go. My threat was not taken too seriously the first few days of my declaration. But when he noticed some of his stuff missing,he got mad. I just said nothing yet after a while, no more dirty clothes lying around! I just hid the offending clothes and one by one I made them "turn up on their own". :)

Actually, in our house, the worst offenders of managing to miss the dirty clothes basket with the clothes is my children. I can't begin to tell you how many times that I have told the children that if they want to have clean clothes to wear, then they really need to put them in the dirty clothes when they take them off.
As far as socks go, my five-year-old seems to think that socks are a disposable item. He will wear them once and then you will never be able to find them again.

They sprout wings and fly away, or they have springy legs that let them bounce off things. Then of course there is that particular male blind spot that prevents them from seeing their offending garment engage in gymnastics and avoid the hamper. Women of course have better vision and better aim.

They miss because they know you'll pick them up!
I'm fortunate not to have that problem and won't ever again, more than likely. I take care of my own clothes basket and if I miss it's my fault. Although I usually don't toss them but drop them in so I don't miss. I'm a very bad shot!

Oh, it's not just dirty clothing and the hamper. For some reason, food wrappers seem to also not quite make it to the trash can; instead, they seek to form communities of like-minded individuals on the counters very near the trash can. Or, maybe, that's just around here...

Thankfully I don't have that problem. My hubby throws it in the hamper but if he misses he will pick it up with no problem. I think most guys do this because they feel they have a live-in servant to take care of it if they miss. What I don't understand are the men you take off their clothes and just drops them on the floor. That would drive me crazy and I would have to put my foot down on that one.
