Bicycle cross country touring

I have been reading a lot of books on bike touring and backpacking, and it sounds like quite the adventure. I honestly can say I am a little scared of the idea but I am considering doing this in the near future. I would like to 1. See a lot of new places. 2. Meet people in different areas. 3. Experience the great outdoors I hear its quit different from the view of an automobile. 4. Accomplish something so few people ever do. I hear the trip can cost upwards of $5000 though and I was wondering if anyone had tried this before, maybe has any advice to give or even how much the trip cost them. I plan to camp the entire time, so hotel costs probably wont be added to my cost, unless it was extreme weather, but then I might just loiter in a Wal-mart ha ha.
