By costumes for beginners I mean to say that can anybody give me some pointers on what costumes I should buy? I really love the fashion and would love to dress up lolita style to go out. By costumes I mean anything from jewelry to clothing to wigs and make-up. I would really appreciate it...thanks guys! :)

I know this discussion is older, but I feel like I should post to clarify what Fornevermore means...
You might think the fashion was weird, but if "Lolita" were known as "Princess Fashion", or "Neo-Victorian", you would just dismiss it as another strange but harmless trend.
Lolita Fashion is essentially a modernized fashion based on historical European clothing. It's all about lace, ruffles, ribbons, elegance, and (for the more historically inclined) modesty. For more modern interpretations, it's another heavily decorated bubblegum fashion with sparkles and cupcakes (and unicorns).
There is almost no male presence involved in the fashion, unless they are wearing "Prince" styles or cross-dressing.
As for the name of the fashion, the Japanese don't really recognize the context of the word. It simply means that a woman is dressing in a girlish (and in this case, antique and modest) manner.
Fun fact: "Lolita" is the diminutive form of the name "Dolores".
I hope this clears things up for everyone. Wikipedia has a fair introductory article on the fashion (completely safe for work), and looking up "Classic Lolita Dresses" in an image search will show you some very lovely dresses, and absolutely no bikinis.

There are some Lolita fashions videos on Youtube. Colors are pastels I believe. Unless you're looking for Goth Lolita. That, of course would be black. There is a video called How to Dress Lolita that might be helpful. Have fun! It's so good to be young. sigh.
