the mail. There is so much fraud, scams and identity theft today. It's a federal crime to open others mail but who cares about breaking the law when they can get real cash for free? I dont even put money in birthday cards any more unless I give the card to them personally. Have you ever cash gifted or know someone who has? I find this hard to believe people are still doing this type of thing.

I still use cash in cards as a gift, although I generally do not send it through the mail - I will, though, if it is just a couple of dollars for a small child to feel special going to the store and being able to pick out and pay for something himself or herself. Normally, if I am going to send something through the mail, then I usually use gift cards. These can still be stolen and used just as easily as cash, however, so I think that checks are safer.

Yeah I used to put $5 in birthday cards too but not any more. I did enjoy seeing the smiles on my nephews face when they opened the cards. Now I just have their parents cash the checks and give them the cash. Safer this way. Oh I heard there was even big scams and fraud with gift cards now. They are more valuable then credit cards these days because they are like blank checks.

Remember at one time the gifts cards used to come preloaded with the cash and people were stealing them from the store and selling them. Now all the gift cards are blank. Also there are some fake gift cards on the internet people are selling for discount prices. I cant remember where I read this article but it made me think. Gift cards are like credit cards now and deserve the same attention. Now thats a good idea; I still keep the receipts for these until the receiver gets the card. Good to know.

I don't remember hearing about the scams and frauds with gift cards, but it really does not surprise me. I know of people that have had their gift cards stolen from the mail and cashed at the store, but I still think that it is better than sending cash money through the mail. If the sender keeps records of the ID numbers on the gift cards, then they can be tracked to the store they were cashed at, and surveillance cameras can help to identify the person(s) that cashed the gift cards. The police can then be notified, and the theif(s) could be arrested and prosecuted.

I have not insert cash in mail to pay for something nor receive any mail with cash inside it. I don't think anyone would still send money through mail these days. We have cheque, cash deposit machine, ATMs and online fund transfer for that purpose. It is more secured and can send a large sum of money at once. Not sure about those who lives in rural area though as they may not have those facilities around and the knowledge needed to utilize them.

No matter how far we think we have come regarding technology there are still people who prefer the old ways. I knew a woman who never had a checking account and still puts her money under the mattress. So I believe people still send cash through the mail. It's very sad but those people are desperate.

@netearner, thanks for sharing your cousin's story. Yes, there are crazy people in the world and most of them are on the internet. You are so right about doing things the right way and your cousin needs to wake up too. God may be on her side but He also gives us common sense. Bad things happen to good people all the time, why make it easy for criminals to abuse us? Dont you agree? I hope one day you can make your cousin see the light.

I have a cousin that is doing this exact same thing that we are talking about. She has been doing this for over 3 yrs and is very happy about receiving cash gifts and sending out them as well. I have asked her was she afraid that someone would have her information or fo that matter people getting her address and she nevers knows who has it and might I say there are some weird and crazy people in the world. I also asked was she afraid that one might show up at her house and she not know who it was and something bad might happen she said she is not scared about that cause strang things has happened in the world why should she worry when she has "GOD" on her side.My thougths are that it is not safe anymore like it was 15or 10 years ago. Some people need to wake up and do things the right way.

yes people shouldnt send it by mail. cause someone else can open the letter and keep it. its just that we trust that is secure to do that. anyway you do the right thing by giving money in envelopes only when you see the person. would be very sad if you are giving it to someone that really needs and someone else would steal it. many people do that mostly those that are working in foreign countries. they send it to their families. maybe they should send it with paypal. better than by letter. with paypal you can send money from your account to any place in the world right?
