I've decided to start weight lifting. I do a decent amount of cardio, but my problem isn't loosing weight. I need to get muscle. Do you have any tips for a newbie?

Ironically I was just thinking last night about lifting weights again. I stopped when I became overwhelmed in my math classes, and so I am going to start again.. First of all, the member who said to start with pound weights? NO!!! That is too much for someone who has not done weigh lifting before. Besides, if you ask me, 5 pounds is too much for a woman unless you want to look like a muscleman. I use 3 pound weights and have much success with that, though 5 pounds to end up with, might be just as good, but not to begin with. First thing you should do is look up the various exercises and how to do it. Posture and stance are EXTREMELY important to prevent back injury or strain. (when I first started out, I strained my upper back/neck muscles and had to go to therapy to learn to stretch them out and strengthen them again). Do these exercises without any weights until you know them well. Then, start off with light weights. I used soup cans, they have just enough weight that after a few repetitions, you will feel it. Then as you get use to that, keep adding heavier weights. Now for the legs, I haven't used the strap on weights, I really should invest in a pair, but for now, I don't use weights no my legs. Remember, start out slow and light weights, work your way up and you should be fine. I hope that helps..

I meant to start out using the soup cans so you can build up to the higher weights. I have never used gym equipment, but now that you mention it, the legs do have bigger muscles, so you can get away with more weight there. Since you know the basics then, all I can say is to just start slowly and watch "how" you do it, because trust me, you don't want to do it wrong and pay for it later. For the arms and stomach, there are exercises, but I don't know how to tell you what I do. Maybe you can search for this online, I know some sites show pictures on how to do some exercises.

I just need a plan I would be happy if I ended up looking more like Jada Smith http://omg.yahoo.com/blogs/balancedliving/jada-pinkett-smith-flaunts-bikini-body-better-age-134813888.html

But you got to remember, as nice as Jada looks, we are all different and can't look like her. But you can still look good with lifting weights, cardio exercises and eating right, which the last two you already do, so you are on the right track..

Well, to tell you the truth, even I would (maybe) going from next September to start doing physical activity. I thought, in my case martial arts, it also has more security and confidence in myself. As for you, you want to do weight lifting to strengthen your muscles, I do not find anything wrong. However, you should first make doctor visits to see if your body is suitable for this type of discipline. I've never done lifting weights, but advice that I can give you, but you would say by anyone is to go in with caution!

I used to kick boxing about 10 years ago and have done Tae Kwon Do on and off since then. For me, it doesn't keep me in very good shape. I am unsure if it's the classes and how they are taught or something else. I'm not over weight, but not rock hard muscles either. Last time I tried working out and putting muscle on, even with increasing my calories I had problems keeping the weight on.

your biceps are the easiest to tone as well as your pectorals or chest muscles. start with 5 lbs dumbbells then work your way up

Have a look through Starting Strength, the basic vids are on youtube. I'd take his dietary advice with a pinch of salt though. There is a growing body of evidence that suggests intermittent fasting is good as it boosts your production of Human Growth Hormone and have a look at which foods boost testosterone. Gregg Nuckols stuff is good too.
