I read this news on Yahoo this morning about a man in Sydney who hid his $15,000 Australian dollars in the oven - the last place you would ever think of hiding your money in! Seriously, how could anyone who cared about their money not think of a proper place to keep it? Now, it wouldn't be so serious if his wife had not turned on the oven by accident. Here's the link to that news: http://news.yahoo.com/blogs/sideshow/man-hides-cash-over-cash-gets-baked-accident-122700396.html (not a referral link) Ok, where's the weirdest place you've hidden your cash? I have hidden before it in several bags and some bills I left in my jeans' pockets. I also hid it under my pillow once but didn't let it stay there that long.

Before going through your post I had heard of the most weird place a man had hidden his savings in was in a ditch that he had dug in the jungle for the purpose.Even more weird was the fact that all his savings were in currency notes.Fortunately for the farmers and unfortunately for him the monsoon that year was unexpectedly good and all his savings was destroyed. This is the first time that I have heard of the idea of hiding money in the oven. How foolish!

Greed? I couldn't think of anything else. Like the kind of greed that gets you in panic mode and you just stash it anywhere nearer, thinking no one else would see it.

Lucky for the farmers then but unlucky for him. Maybe if he had split his savings in several hiding places then he would still be able to see a part of his savings.

I wonder why people hide their hard earned money in such places. There are banks. And they provide interest on the deposit. What's the point in hiding money in an oven or a ditch in the jungle.

I tried to hide it in my books but there are times that when I badly needed the money, I tend to forget which book I hid it so I had no choice but to scan each book until I find those bills. I guess you might be thinking that was really a stupid thing to do. I did thought of it that way too so I just deposit it in a bank and whenever I needed money, I know where to look for.

Hahha I have tried hiding it in a book before but if I had a lot of bills, it would then be too obvious that I'm keeping some money in it.

Yes I also read that news and it makes me really think why in this world this man had thought of hiding the money in an oven of all places. What a very poor mind he has. If that oven is broken then it would be fine to hide the money there but it is working so how could he ever thought of hiding the money there? So the hiding ended up in such a big, big loss. The $15,000 Australian dollars just turned to ash in the wink of an eye. I wonder if that man did not go crazy! Well I know a friend of my husband who has the habit of hiding money from his wife. So what he did was to hide the money in their refrigerator. He wrapped the cash in a plastic bag and placed it there in the coldest part of the fridge. But alas, the wife while defrosting the fridge found the money and she immediately thought it was his husband's money. Their children are too young to have that much so what she did she got the money and spend it for their groceries. Now when it was time for the husband to get the money, it was of course not there anymore. He could not ask his wife for obvious reason. Now the wife was just laughing in secret while her husband was searching like a fool. Hahahaha!

That's a funny story! That was exactly the reason why I thought he hid the money all of a sudden in the oven - perhaps he didn't want his wife knowing about it. For all that effort in not letting her know, he lost it in the end.

That is weird its crazy how we have to hide our money in our own home lol . If I was hiding my money I would hide it in a shifted tile I have . I would also hide money in my useless clothing iron . Whenever I stay with people I dont trust I walk with my useless iron and put my money or documents in it.

Hahah that's a clever idea. No one would think you have something important in your useless clothing iron.

I've actually never really had any strange places where I hid my own money. Normally I keep the cash that I have on hand in my purse. The thing that is strange is that I do keep our check book hidden in the drop ceiling in our bedroom. The reason that I do that is because of the fact that we have had someone come into our house before that has stolen a check from us, so I do like to keep those in a place that no one would think of to look. However, my great-grandmother did keep her cash in the ice box in her house. I think that the reason that she did that was because she didn't trust banks as she was a young adult during the Great Depression.

That's also a good idea to keep it in the drop ceiling.

Hi jolie, I have never hidden my money anywhere, but I have this aunty of mine, who hid a bundle of dollars and showed me only. I was at her place and her daughter was having bath, so we were in the daughter's room. I was very frequent at their house. So this aunty came in the room and hid the money behind a the door. The door had a photo pasted on it and it was cellotaped from all four sides, so it became like an envelop sort. She slid the bundle of money from top and did it properly. She told me that when ever her family is in need of money when she is not there then must give that money to her family. She told me to promise not to tell anyone. I had not told anyone. But one day after some years, she told me that she had taken that money out. lol.. thanks for sharing. i is really weird that this fellow hid money in the oven. I think the oven was not working, otherwise the wife would have known. good day.

Ah that's what they say, that you can only keep some of your secrets for a while before you let someone else find out.

That's awful! Now I can understand hiding it in the drawer UNDER the oven in a bag, below all of the pots and pans. In the actual oven though? The poor sap. My sister used to hide it in the vent.. She picked up the carpet from around the vent (I think she cut a row of seams) and hid it under the carpet there. I then started doing that myself when I moved into her room after she moved out.. I've put it in drawers and forgotten about it, but never hid it somewhere that could have intesne heat...

Yes, it is. All that money to be used for something important and he'd missed the safest place to hide it. So what happens if someone else found out about the money you put in the drawer? Will it be finders' keepers then?

I thought these things only happen in cartoons. I guess there really are people who's obsession on how to keep their money safe has somewhat distorted their mental faculties . I'm very traditional and I just put mine in the bank. I do however keep some money handy, but it stays in my wallet.

Just like in those Tom and Jerry type of cartoons. I know some incidents where one lost money only to be receiving a bigger amount later. But losing money because it got burnt in the oven can be owed to carelessness and stupidity.

That is indeed, a weirdest place to hide your money. Why not trust the financial institution, like the banks. With the debit card, it is convenient, and less worry. There is always extra security to watch your money without worry too. With small amount of money, I would keep in somewhere safe in the house, but not in the oven, that is way too dangerous with a mindless mind.

It's weird though that he hadn't even informed his wife where he hid the money. Maybe she could've helped her to deposit in a bank until it was time for him to use the money.

I never hide money in strange places, because I know some people who did do that, and then forgot about it and then lost the money in different ways. So because of that, I have never thought that this would be a good idea. And hearing this story just confirms that that is indeed more clever anyway.

Exactly. With all other stuff we do and think about in a day, sometimes our memory would fail us.

I think he was in panic mode, that's why he did it. That's the lesson we all have to learn - the more we try to compulsively keep something safely, the more prone we are to lose it.

Wow, I thought it doesn't happen in real life. I thought those are coins, if it's the oven that he chose to safe keep it, but bills! What is he thinking? LOL! I also just keep my money in common places that I just place under lock and key, or the bank. I saw my grandma keep her money in her bible. Her bible have this worn, leather cover with a zipper. She keeps money between the leather cover and the pages between her bible. I find it weird but then I always see her Bible near her most of the time, so I guess it's safe. Besides, someone will be guilty to steal it while holding the bible.

Hmm that's an uncommon place to keep money but quite effective. Besides, the Bible would be the last place you'd likely find treasure (literally) on an ordinary day.

haha that's a funny yet interesting news! Anyway, in the house i experienced putting my money at my closet. Under my shirts. But when i go outside and i bring a big amount of money, i experienced putting it in my bra. :) or even in the socks i wear that time.:)haha! If someone would kidnap or holdup me, he would not think of my bra or socks. :)

I've kept my money before in an envelope and put it under my folded t-shirts too in my closet. Then I would take it out of there and transfer it to another location again. My friend does that too - keep his money in his socks every time he commutes by bus. He works in a call center and has been on the night shift. He would have some kind of small velcro belt for his ankle where he would hide his money for the day. He said he got this idea because he knows there have been pickpocket cases inside buses.

hi joliefille! that's weird, i think that's the idea isn't it. he kept it there cause it's the last place people will look. i keep my money in my pocket as well. but my grandmother keeps hers in a handkerchief. she wraps it, ties it then pins it to her brassiere. Isn't that weird. I don't know who would dare to take her money. I know i won't! lol!

My grandmothers do keep their money that way too! I am still kinda uncomfortable with trying that out for myself. I would rather go for hiding it in my rubber shoes or put a velcro belt in my ankle area to keep my money, just like what my friend usually does when he commutes by bus to work.

Hi, This is truly weird! Some people can do such weird actsSurely as you have said, the oven might have been switched on and all would get burnt up! I have hidden my money in story books sometimes. That is when I have saved some extra cash that I would not want my mother to know about.
