Well, one probable reason I guess is that a boy would carry on the father's family name. I know this sounds lame to some people, but for others, the continuity of a family name is somewhat important for I guess varied reasons. Although when I found out my wife was pregnant, I'm more concerned about the health of our baby. But I admit part of me wanted our baby to be a boy for the reason I've mentioned. Besides, it's a bit easier for me to teach my son as he grows up since I've experienced most of what he will be experiencing :)

What beamer said here is the major reason to your question especially to the Asian culture. But I am also thinking, guys will always like to have a son simply because they are males too. This is also how women wants their child to be. Women likes to have a girl, right? My perception! Hihi

That doesn't happen among my friends. I guess it depends on the traditional culture of the family. I know that many Chinese families prefer to have boys in the family, but it doesn't really matter whether the boy is the first born or not, but they want to have boys in the family. Some young people nowadays don't really mind about this, and most of my friends like to have daughters. They always think daughters are more caring, lovely, and not as naughty as the boys.
To me, I have no preference too, because they are my children, no matter a boy or a girl. I also think boys can be lovely and caring too, I think my son is.

I tend to think that the reason that a man wants to have a son as their first born child is because of the fact that they want to have someone to pass their name onto. This could be their entire name or just to know that their last name is going to be passed on through the next generation.
However, with us, my husband didn't care whether we had a boy or a girl with my first pregnancy. We ended up having our daughter first. However, he really did hope for a boy with our second pregnancy because he was always one of those people that wanted to have both a son and a daughter.

I want a baby boy to be my first child, my reason is if you have a baby boy as an eldest child they can be more protective to their younger sibling specially in the years to come.

This sounds strange to me. Among my friends, I have not seen this tendency. In fact, among a lot of my friends, many have first born daughters, and they are very happy with them. May be, some of the males would want a baby boy first. Personally, I did not had any such preference. Also, I believe that one should think of little ones as a child first and then as a boy or girl.

I think it's just the fact that they dream of having a little boy that looks up to them and wants to be just like them. That's part of the reason my boyfriend wanted a boy.
Another part of my boyfriend's thing about having a boy is, every firstborn on his dad's side of the family has been a boy for the past four generations. If I were to have a girl, it would break the chain. Luckily, I am having a boy, so the tradition continues.
