Stressful jobs make us get older quickly

While serving as a Bank Manager I use to have stress on account of the following: 1) staff related problems -- nowadays on account of less job security in jobs this problem doesn't arise except in places like... 2) High targets for deposit mobilisation, recovery of NPAs. 3) unhelpful top management. Apart form this stress created by self as giving loan to difficult borrowers. I use to be more careful in all these but in spite of it there were some days when I use to have stress. Luckily that use to create only asthma and I was taking medication for them, After retirement , a few years after that I got BP problem. I was setting a time limit for job and complete them early and not postpone. But people who are indecisive will face a lot of problem in this regard. Recent studies have proved that stressful jobs help making one aged quickly. What is your view in this regard and how you are/were managing stress at work? good day.

There are many times when I totally agree with this one, because any time you are under a lot of undue stress, especially something that you cannot have a hold on and a say on, it can be quite stressful, and cause a lot of other Health problems as well. It will also age us and make us feel more tired, and often less caring. When I find things happening in my life that are causing this for me it time to learn to relax and find things to take my mind off them. Finding something to do that helps you distress is the ticket. Maybe post here in myLot, take a nap, or just doing something you enjoy. Most people continue to take their problems with them, and if it is work they need to leave it behind and have some Fun. It will help change your life and outlook on life.

I am still having issues with my health and trying to always keep more positive and do what I can to get better. Learning how to deal with everything without letting it consume me is the biggest thing for sure.

Yes., that is correct. If only we learn to leave problems relating to work at work spot then one may not have stress. I know you have in a few posts told about the problems you had in attending to work with your ailment also. But work is a must for taking care of our necessities. So we have to learn to accept stress as part of our life as you are rightly doing. How is your health? I hope it has improved. good day.

Exactly!!! we get older faster when being in stress long time. Any works may bring stress to us..so that we have to get out of it when we just get it. I used to be in stress for long time and my health was really bad. I take 1 year to be back to normal. Stress is really dangerous!!!

yes. if we consider work to be more stressful we should stay away from it for some days/time. We should learn to accept stress but carry on our routine without our health being affected. good day.

Stress is inevitable in one's life. May be reduced. I used to avoid stress by doing fun activities. This kind of compensation. But, stress doesn't disappear altogether. Then I found a new way, which might be considered crazy. That is, I enjoy the stress, and even find other sources of stress to be enjoyed. Over time, I'm addicted to stress every day. I don't recommend this to try. But go ahead.

hsofyan: Your observation that stress cannot be totally eliminated and you enjoy stress and are also addicted to it. that is interesting. I also want stress for earning. But sometimes when it goes higher that causes thinking "why should I take stress?"--of course this thinking has come now only not when i was in active service,

For me, the higher stress is a new challenge. I had to try it. Not that I would succeed. I repeatedly "lost" with stress. But I'm not hands up. My attitude is making me often given the job of companies to solve difficult problems, which may not be handled by ordinary people. (only a story when I was working as a staff expert from CEO).

I do agree with you. it does not mean that we don't need stress, in some situation it is needed for better solution but too much stress in our life is not good for the health. One should know how to handle and manage their stress very well so they will turn the stress into the positive and good thing. Not something that will make them get older quickly.(^^)

Hanum: I agree with you. I read this in the article given below: http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/life-style/health-fitness/health/Stressful-jobs-making-us-age-prematurely/articleshow/15274392.cms That made me think of my active service days and hence I thought of starting a discussion. Even after retirement we have stress for other reasons --like health, finance, family etc,.

Not only will stressful job make you age unnecessarily, but it will lower your immune system, thus making you get some ailments. My husband since being assigned as the team leader of some branches, started getting thin and irritable. Lately , he had shingles, which as i have researched is that stress is a factor in one getting them.

After completing the prescribed medicines and ointments he is already "well" now. However, the doctor said the parts where it scarred would forever be once in a while be itchy from the inside and numb. And sure it is, as he told me.

I totally agree with you. Stress makes not only older but kills too. We must be very carefull with it. I think we need to relax and a way for this is doing exercise, e.g. swimming, yoga, jogging, etc. It's important too, if we try to have inner peace, to avoid bad emotions, and try to get a healthy life. However, many times, life conditions give us not chance to live like as I have above described, then we have to read books that can help us in life in my case the Gospels.

having inner peace is not an easy thing. when problems confront us we lose our balance and we forget all that we have read. Life with stress ok but work itself should not be stressful all along.

I think all job are stressful because we have to be responsible on what we are doing. The task that we do are on our hands and if we did not do it right it is also our problem. But not only job that makes us getting old quickly, dealing with other people too that makes our life miserable is a very stressful one.

lynboobsy yes. you brought another important point --dealing with people causing stress. besides this comparing with others causes increased stress. we should not compare ourselves with others. good day.

Uncle Ravi, indeed stressful job can makes us get easily sick and turned older at a much faster pace. I see myself getting problem with health ever since i handle many accounts in a company. At first i thought i can and able to handle but over time i see myself starting to have sleep problem. Later on, i don't have good appetite which resulted that i am getting easily falls ill until i am unable to performed my work well. Until at last, i decided to left my work and stay at home taking care of my family since i haven't found any good helper as well.

Yes, stress is one sure way of giving us all sorts of ailments and getting wrinkles is one of them. However, if there is nothing else that we could do, we might as well face the music with a smile. If this is the case, we must then learn how to love and enjoy our work in order to avoid the negative impact of stress in jobs.

yes. Say about three or four decades ago night-shift work was not that very common as it is today. Nowadays even women are working in large number in night shifts. Occasionally one or two news item gets released in the newspapers against this. But they die down slowly. Stress in work -- related to peer pressure and superior's misbehavior is more as compared to other areas. If one learn to manage this then 50% of the problems are sorted out. Still work stress is part and parcel of life and people have to learn to put up with it or like the work more.

Hi Ravi, good morning. In the current scenario, you are absolutely right. People who have the sole right to take decisions, sole authority to manage many things at a time, and managing various levels of people, different categories of administration and many more are found stressful at their duties as many are much complicated and decisive and dependable also. Here in my office, I a just sitting outside to major top level partners and they manages the whole India region, one for Asia Pacific & the other one for Europe and American regions. All the 3 people are in their 35-37 age and well deciplined and much experienced and highly knowledgeable. I am in much relation with three of these people and found much relaxed in all their duties. Most of the time they are in travels and whenver they are in office, I never found them that they are haunted with problems or issues. At many times I used to think that how they can be so cool and they used to meet 100s of clients and many top level people all over the world and they seems absolutely free. From my experience, they used to give instructions to others and just signing the papers and that is their major works. However, it is to be accepted that people on higher levels and lower levels have their own stress at all times. That I had seen a month back, when I made a mistake in a computation. I was totally out of the mind and as the mistake identified so late in the night, it could have rectified with minor problems as the account was automatically updated once the data got transferred into the computer. Any way, stress and tensions are part of the job and as people are qualified and experienced and trained enough to face such problems, alongwith the support of others and team members. I know, especially, in the banking sector, the mangement level people have much tension other than such field. Also, wherever we are, there may be its own problems and if we do a genuine and proper move as per the law and rules, it may be good for all. Last week one girl from a bank was really following up with me to open an account with their bank on her referrel. She used to sit in the cashier cabin and as I am a frequent visitor, she collected my number. I called up her to my office and from the discussion I come to know that they are given instructions to get more customers for the bank, even after she is stting in a cashier counter!

thanks1961: You have narrated well about the experience of newcomers and seniors. Yes. bank people are requested to canvass new account. Any organisation cannot remain static and has to be growing steadily. It is good that girl approached for opening the account. True we cannot open accounts in all banks. we need one or two accounts only. good day.

I'm not really speaking from experience (only really having had a job for a month, long ago), but I would guess that 'it's not about me' would be my motto. People are upset; I'll help (or whatever), but it's not about me. When I "punch out," I cease to be Jay Hubbard, Professional Service-Person and -start being Jay Hubbard, Professional Relaxer. Leave work at work.

Ravi, i agree with the research, if we are doing stressful jobs, we think about the job a lot and spend most of the time with it, we forget about our health and missed to take care about it, due to this activities we will face some health issues and getting older easily with the health problems. We must relax and refresh our self frequently to keep our self young

Yes I can not agree with you any more, now I am under a great deal of pressure and my hair keep dropping even I just about 30 years old,I always afraid that my hair will drop a lot and looks older than 40 years old person, and I think stressful jobs not only make us get older quickly but also do harm to our health,so may be I should find a new job for my health also for my life,I think health is the most important thing in our lives, without healthy nothing will be good enough,so firstly we should learn to release our stress,if this is not work, may be we should get away from those stressful job.

yaeh i must say i agree with you. i don't like stressful jobs, if someone works under stress everyday, i think it is so terrible. i must say i like working but i don't enjoy stress. of course, you must have some stress. sometimes it can help you succeed, but if you feel stressed every day. you will feel tired and feel no happiness in your life. and become older. so let's relax yourself after the whole day's working.

I definitely believe that any kinda stress will make you age . If you look at woman with tuns of children how they always look tired . Stress is the main contribution to looking old before time I try not to stress . The best way to manage stress at work is to have some sport activity or nice place to lounge after work.

Children help us develop interest in life. Of course too many worries in bringing up children also causes stress and is a negative factor for our health. Taking up sports after work is good. Your blog site is good.

Yes, i agree with you, stressful job is so damaging to our health, it is no doubt is a hazard to any healthy individual either mentally or physically. It may not just make us look older than our actual age, it actually can aged us prematurely. It probably can also shorten our life span if it is not place under the control by our mind and deal with effectively immediately. It is always good to attend some stress management class to learn about proper ways to lower your stress level and put yourself back into the control of your own destiny instead of let those stressful job control you.

Stress make us look older due to wrinkles line being so concentrated with work and dont even have time to smile as we always frown. unlike those who always give a smile so i guess it also depends to the position and a kind of job we have. But there's no easy job and even me im getting tired with my job maybe because of the same routine im doing every day for many years now and i want some change but my salary is already high so instead of thinking about being tired with my job i just think of my salary day and vacation day with my daughter and family and just consider my job as job for money sake.

You are a young man from China -- good to see that more work is done for earning more and as a result stress is there. sometimes the taxi drivers do work 24 hours continuously and that affect the co-passengers also. At least people in such professions should take adequate rest.
