Hi guys, the place where i am from, we have a belief that when dogs howl, somebody is going to die in the family. It have proved to be true many times. My grandmother tells a lot of stories of past, and when she hears dogs howling she gets mad at the dogs and starts yelling at them to calm them down. Do you believe in this? have you experienced it? what are some of beliefs in your society?
Please share, I love it, it is interesting to know what our ancestors used to believe.
have a wonderful day.

In my country they say dogs' howling means bad luck. I don't think so. Their howling is a way of communicate, how could this mean bad luck? And, for the beliefs in your country, how could this tell somebody is going to die in the family? Especially that there is not only a dog who howls. They usually howl more, all the dogs from a street howl and the others from the other side of the town respond to them.

Thank God Octave, I was just about giving up hope until I got to your comment. Pulled up from insanity ha ha. I can breath up here. Exactly, they communicate. Why are so many dogs outside anyway? Take your dogs in the house people. They like to sleep in warm dog beds not on the dirt.

Ever since I was a kid, I was told that when dogs howl, some type of paranormal activity is present. Spirits roaming around and stuff. I don't think it's scientifically proven. What I do know is that dogs have keener senses than us, and as such, they may actually be seeing or hearing things we aren't able to. So maybe there might be some truth to a dog's howl and omens.

That is true that dogs can sense spirits. One day i was sitting in our porch at about 12.30am with my dog. everyone was asleep and there was pin drop silence in the whole area. My dog was sniffing and looking at one place and barking. he then is running inside the house and then coming back. looking the same place and direction and barking again. then again running inside, as if he was scared of something. I have a feeling that he must have sensed some spirit there. I went inside instantly. lol.. thanks for sharing. have a wonderful day.

Hi, Riyauro! That is an interesting belief. When I was a teenager I had a best friend whose parents were from Russia. She told me that her mother wouldn't let her look in the mirror at night before going to bed because she said if you do the devil can come out of the mirror while you're sleeping. That was kind of a scary thing to believe in.

This is ridiculous. No I don't believe in this superstition or any other. This is 2012. We all need to wake up and start living in reality people. It wouldn't be bad if some superstitions actually hurt animals because of nonsense made up by grandmothers who were bored.
If dogs are howling it's because they are tied up outside most likely. They are hungry, in pain or they are LONELY. I had a dog for 17 years. He NEVER howled. Not once, ever.
If he did I would have taken him to the vet. Bring your dogs in the house then there will be no howling.

So when a dog howls that is a sign that someone you know is going to die. I haven't heard that one although when we had an earthquake here in Seattle about ten years ago my dogs began to howl and I couldn't figure out what it was. I heard a howling sound myself it was a high pitch sound that no one else could hear. I thought my grand-daughter was playing with the dishwasher and when I found out she wasn't I realized it was an earthquake and grabbed her and yelled out to the kids upstairs to get downstairs and into a doorway. I had opened up my front door and was holding my grad-daughter in the doorway and noticed other people in the neighborhood was doing the same thing. So I do believe animals do have a sixth sense about things and I have a hearing loss and so I too hear certain sounds and vibrations that others do not.

Your first sentence makes no sense but at least you followed it up with sanity.
Right, the dogs SENSED the earthquake. They CAN hear and sense things we CANNOT. That's it, no superstition involved. It's not a "sixth" sense, they just have better HEARING than we do.

I came from a country where beliefs in supernatural beings are strong, there are some provinces who have so many superstitious beliefs to the point that you are being imprisoned by the things you are supposed and not supposed to do.
This is where religion comes in. Even though we have hundreds of superstitious beliefs binding us, we believe that there is someOne bigger than those supernatural creatures, someOne stronger than those monsters, someOne who overcame those superstitious beliefs...

Right and that's whats wrong with many countries, too many ridiculous superstitions. This is why so much cruelty towards people and animals exist in these places. Instead of stopping this nonsense seems to be getting worse. Or is it that I never knew about these people and their insanity before my lot. Maybe that's more like it.

There are many dogs in the locality where i live. Some are pet but mostly we see stray dogs. They use to howl every now & then but we have never seen any weird thing which can be connected to their howling. Some old people in the locality feel that dogs have the ability to see ghosts or spirits & to some extent some people also believe that their howling is a bad sign.Another belief is that spirits are seen after midnight & so on.If we believe these myths about dogs seeing spirits & spirits coming at night then dogs should only howl at night. But this is not true because dogs howl at daytime also.Only we hear stories & myths about these things as no one ever claims of any such an experience. May be these beliefs are true or may be not because without any genuine evidence these things seem just as fabricated stories, nothing more than that.
